I like this driver alot. I had the Cobra 427 prior to and was able to swap it for this because I bought the 427 used and swapped for the SZ used and paid the difference. A couple of the things I like about this driver: 1) Very large forgiving sweet spot, 2) The ball trampolines off the spot extremely well, 3) fairly easy to keep a slice down to a nice "baby fade", 4) Easy to hit a draw that does not turn into a viscious hook, 5) not so large that you feel you are swinging a VW Bug at the end of a golf shaft. I do not have the greatest swing speed (my guess is around 95 - right now if I go faster I loose control), so the stock Aldila Tour R stock shaft mid kick is actually pretty right for me. It is slightly more stiff than most regular shafts. As I speed up my swing try to maintain consistancy, I will probably swap it for the stiff. Some with higher swing speeds find this reg flex stock shaft a bit whippy, but it helps me keep it 235-265 for most of my drives. If you have a faster swing I would recommend the stiff, or a aftermarket shaft. I have a 975 J-VS with a Garralloy which I like, but I hit this further and more consistant, I have hit the Callaway Hawk Eye, which I liked, I have hit the Taylor 580 & 580XD which I liked but both took some getting used to, I hit the Cleveland 460 which I thought would be too big for me (like the 427 was, and the 440 SZ is) but was pleasantly surprised. I have to say that this is still the driver for me, and took me into the 90's after less than 18 months. For those looking into breaking into the 90s, I would definately recommend this club, and to try the Cleveland 460. I personnaly am very happy with it.

Well, if you've read the reviews on this site, Golf Magazine, and other sites, it is very true that this club hits very high. And I tend to be a high ball hitter. However, in the winds of Oklahoma, I have had my best drives if the wind is with me or if I even have a crosswind. I've gained at least 10 yards. Against a +10 mph wind, I use the 13 degree 3 wood, which doesn't necessarily hit the ball that much farther, but very straight. I've played the Taylor Made 540XD, and didn't like the feel of the clubhead at impact (too tinny). And I also played the 983K, but the Cobra is definitely more forgiving and just as long. I am a "club ho" that has bought and sold a lot of drivers on ebay, but this club is in my bag until at least the 2005 models come out. I will add that I am 47 years old, 6'3", with a driver swing speed about 90 mph, and with this driver I drive the ball about 230-240 yards. A quality driver at a reasonable price.

Bought a 9* with the Aldilla Tour HM 60 Stiff after having purchased the SZ 3 wood and could not believe how forgiving that club was--so I thought I would spend a couple bucks and see if the David Ferhety hype was true. The good news is that this driver is very hot--easily hits as far as the TaylorMade XD series if not farther. This club is also very forgiving; I now believe the hype about not losing distance on off-center hits, and the club will correct for faulty swings--at least when compared to player's clubs like the Titleists and Taylors. The shaft, for a stock shaft is excellent with reproducible ball flights on the similar swings. The club's feel is also quite good, communicating well as to whether the ball was hit in/out and hi/low on the clubface. The amazing thing is that you can also draw or fade the ball seemingly at will, but since the face is more forgiving, you do have to put more action on the ball to curve it. The bad news is that this club hits the ball VERY high for a 9* loft. I doubt if even the lowest loft, 7.5*, would get the ball down enough to be comparable to 8.5 on another club. The worst part about the club is that while it communicates well where you contacted the ball, I have no feel at ALL for where the ball is going--it will be in the fairway, but left, middle, right--who knows? With the Titleist drivers you know exactly where the ball is going. Finally, the closed angle of the clubface takes away the right side of the fairway, but brings the left rough/OB into play on a bad swing. You absolutely have to try to slice this thing--even then you are like to wind up in the right rough, not OB. Bottom line: easy to hit fairways, easy to hit it very long, will not slice without really trying, but hard to pinpoint where the ball will wind up. If you are a low ball hitter, a slicer, need length, play wide open fairways and don't have to deal with wind this is a good choice. The 'street price' of $250 makes it a bargain comapred to what else is out there. Me--I am sticking with the 975JVS.

Model Reviewed: Cobra 400 SZ Aldila HM Tour 60 Stiff

My search for a new driver is finally over. After convincing myself that the 983k was going in my bag, I went to my golf shop to see what the launch monitor said the best driver for me was. I was leaning heavily towards the 983k 10.5* with the Aldila NV 65-S, when the pro suggested I try the Cobra 440 SZ 9*. I immediatly was getting 3-4 mph more on my ball speed and about 5-6 yards more carry, but it was launching with a bit too much spin. I then tried the 400 SZ with 9* and bingo, that was my new demo for the week. I was able to hit the ball on the driving range where I wanted it to go within about 15 yards on either side about 75% of the time which is at least 25% better than with any other driver. When I finally got it out on the course, it was amazing. Since it was early in the morning on a weekday I was able to hit 2 or 3 drives on the longer holes. I was hitting drives for the sheer enjoyment of seeing the ball go 260+ yards before touching down in the fairway. If you are looking for new driver, go demo a Cobra 400 or 440SZ and the rest will take care of itself.

demoed this and taylormade 540XD. Both are great drivers, but found I hit Cobra 10 yds further. Horrible slice prior seems to have been mostly corrected. Very forgiving club. Love it! From 210 yds if straight w/old driver to 230-250 with this. Great club
