SMT Golf 455 Deep Bore Drivers

SMT Golf 455 Deep Bore Drivers

DESCRIPTION

We have been working on this head for the past 4 months, it took 9 re-designs to get the head to pass the stringent testing we put each and every head through, to get it to this stage. The first component head ever to have pieces of the head made in Japan, finished in Taiwan. We have combined 3 different strains of Titanium in one head to produce the highest quality head ever produced that is available to the consumer in component form. We had a unique opportunity to jump into the vaccum forging field with this head, and based on our testing, will most likely re-tool our existing heads to follow suit.

I just built a Deep Bore 9* with an AJtech shaft cut to 46" and I have to say that I really love it. When I put a good swing on it it goes long and straight. My previous driver was a Nickent Genex 425 and was a very good driver as well, but I seem to be able to hit the SMT more consistently straight and perhaps a slight increase in distance. The reviews about this head are definitely true. It's also a really beautiful candy apple red! I had my shaft SST Pured at Golfsmith which may be helping with my consistency, but since I built this with the pured shaft, I have nothing to compare it to. I highly recommend getting tested on a launch monitor to find the right shaft flex and head loft that is right for you. My AJtech shaft is really sweet, but I got it for next to nothing. You could find a comparable shaft for about $50 or so and still get the same performance, in my opinion. Overall, you really can't go wrong with this head if you're looking to hit it long and straight and not spend $400 in the process!

I don't even own this driver, but I play with a person who had a 9* stiff ust porforce shaft 46". I Hit my driver first about 300 yards. Then I wind up with this one and blast it 340 yards. That ball pierced through the air with a screach and The driver boomed a powerful smack! I was sold. The guy who owned it only hit it about 280 and when he saw my 120 lbs. 14 year old body pound it that far, he knew I should get one. So he said he would give it to me and he would buy another one. I can't wait.

What an awesome club. Built the 455 DB with a Harrison Mugen shaft at 46". I can't beleive how far and straight I hit this club!!! I've been building clubs for 15 years. All makes and models. This one is by far the best driver I have ever made. I am consistently 270yds in the fairway and have hit 295 - 300 a few times.

Customer Service

Excellent. Never a problem.

This is an Excellent Driver! I have actaully built 2 so far. One a Eleven* with an Accuflex Assasin II World Champion S flex. I hit this driver straight around 250 consistently and have even hit 270 on occasion. I made another one Ten* with an Aldila NVS 65-S. Wow! I hit this one 10 yards pass the 11*. I guess I finally found the right launching conditions for. In any case, if you are looking for a great driver that will reward your need for distance and control without taking you to the poor house, this drive is for you.

To put it simply, I'm reaching every hole with one less club. This club is great quality, looks great, sounds great, and flies about 15-20 yards further. I swing about 110 mph, and this head with the x flex blue shaft is a great combo. The total length is 46 inches. It also does not seem 455 cc's at address. I think most of the volume is from the deep face design. I am not a spokesman for SMT, nor do i wish to be. I'm just a golfer hoping to help other golfers find a good club. I've been searching for a driver that doesn't balloon on me, and yet still achieves a mid to high trajectory to carry certain trees. This club seems to do that. I'm very impressed. Contrary to what other reviews have said about it not being workable, I find i can fade it and draw it at will.

Customer Service

I bought this club from diamondtour.com unassembled. It cost me $203.73, and i feel it is well worth it. no problems from diamond tour at all.

I stumbled on the SMT reviews by mistake but after reading on, I just had to try a driver out. I finally chose an 8 deg 455 DB, with assasin shaft. Distance is definetely longer but what most(a part from the price - £135) impressed me was the consistency of the club, the bad shots still in play in or around the fairway.

Customer Service

Thanks to Shaun at SMT(UK),who was excellent throught.

Model Reviewed: SMT 455 Deep Bore 12 50"

I've written about my 14 degree 455DB before and as promised have made up a 12 degree club at 50" to see how far I can go. 455db 12 degrees 50" accuflex Pro LD xx Winn oversize. as mentioned in this thread, prices in the UK are shocking for branded drivers. Its fairly scandalous what we get charged for clubs with sub standard shafts and heads that are pretty average; there really isn't much to pick between them. I'm now a big believer that you should spend your money on the shaft first then worry about the clubhead second. on the whole, pretty much everything you see in the pro shop that comes off the shelf has a very cheap shaft and that translates to very inconsistent performance. I wouldn't even consider using an off the shelf driver without first pulling out the stock shaft and putting in an Accuflex. I can't recommend Accuflex gear highly enough, I like the Pro LD and even cut to 50" it feels more stable than the harrison shafts I started with (which are in turn 100 times better than the stock shafts in 99% of shop bought drivers). As for the 455DB head, they're well made and even when assembled in an LD config (to max LDA length) I don't have to worry about the durability of the clubface and performance is better than any branded alternative I've personally tried. Initially, I had just made the long club out of curiosity to see if I could clear the back fence at the range (or even just to see if I could hit a 50" club...) 4 months later its actually in my bag as my first choice driver. I wouldn't say that the 455 head is the reason for the extra distance I'm getting, thats clearly just down to the longer shaft (and basic physics) but the head just makes hitting the ball with this extreme config a breeze. Even with 12 degrees of loft I'm hitting or clearing (if I really try) the back fence at my range, with an off the shelf driver I'm not even close. if you take one thing away from this here it is... if you want more distance and accuracy you won't find it in a new clubhead. Get an Accuflex LD shaft (either the Assassin or the Pro LD) and a good quality oversize driver head; for me thats the 455DB head. Finally, don't be afraid of buying a little more loft than you think you need, a 12 degree club sounds like the sort of thing your grandad plays but if you take my advice and put in a high quality shaft your drives won't balloon on you and the extra airtime will translate into more distance.

I recently built a SMT 02 using an inexpensive MCS "Orange Crush" shaft, driver length is 46". This puppy is a CANNON!!! Takes a smooth controlled swing, but when I did, I was hitting the ball way past the 250 sign on the fly. I only paid $70 for the head and $15 for the shaft (Ebay), now how can U beat that?? The bright orange shaft is a bit loud, but after I bombed one, nobody was looking at the shaft..... as I get more and more used to this beast, I will be able to put a little more and more into the swings, looking forward to that. A great deal, a great product... Oh, and it sounds great, unlike the Big Bang 450cc (nice too, but not as nice, and sounds like hitting an empty oil drum with a sledge) or even the Adams Redline Tour (nice, but in the minors compared to the SMT)..... The 402cc head is just right.... Now we will see if it can stay in the bag when the Advanced Golf Technology Aurora arrives, THAT is supposed to be Surreal!! Club junkies forever!!! :-)

SMT has lifetime warranties on their heads, a no brainer.

A great driver. I basically got it for free, because it has a decent sized dent in the back of the club head (!) and pretty serious looking burn mark near the hosel - both not noticeable at address. What the hell, I thought...so, I put a decent UST ProForce 75 stiff shaft in it and the ball just rockets. The feel is solid, sound is inspiring and feedback is great. The ball doesn't launch particularly high, but I think that is the high bend shaft counteracting the loft a bit. 270 yards is common with this club and I have managed to kill several drives in the 300 yard range. Plenty of roll too! I just need to hit good approaches :) Perhaps not has forgiving as some drivers, but I would still rate this at the top of the heap in terms of distance, performance and value. You can get them inexpensively now all over the place. It's definitely worth giving a try.

I'm posting this from the UK where we get ripped off buying anything, especially golf equipment. At current exchange rates a TM R7 Quad retails here at $790 !! Not many people here know about SMT drivers. Well that suits me because right now I've got a hell of an advantage in my bag. These heads are something else. I have a 10* 455DB with an Accuflex Assassin II 'S' flex shaft at 45". I have a swing speed of 95 mph, I am 49 years old and 5'10" tall. What does all this add up to ? In damp cool conditions the ball pitches at 250-260 yards on a slight draw and the scoreless face adds plenty of roll. I can't wait to use it in dry conditions. I'm expecting 290-300 yds. It takes a little getting used to on the set up but perservere and it will come. You need to tee it high due to the deep face and I find that I get better results lining the ball up towards the heel, but once you get past that it's boom boom every time. Oh, I nearly forgot the cost. $179 including shipping to the UK !!! I had mine made by Bill Weitzel at Cleve Golf in Ohio. He is an approved SMT clubmaker. Beautifully made, great service and a real nice guy. As somebody else said on here BELIEVE THE HYPE, these are the no.1 drivers on the planet at the moment.
