I recently bout a brand new Burner 420 10.5 degree driver by Taylor Made. This was the best $120.00(with 3 year replacement warranty at sam's wholesale)I have ever spent. Before using this driver I was using my 3 wood to drive with. I just could not hit my Top Flite driver. I am now hitting the ball 265 yards on avg. in the fairway. This is a must have driver for the money. The only negative is the grip but it is usable.

The R420 is simply one of the best driver deals you can find currently while they are still available. I was tempted to buy a R580 but did not like the extremely large clubhead. There were three R420's left at the Van's in Mesa, Az which were marked down to $129 and it was recommended that I give one a demo run so I grabbed the 8.5 Stiff model. The 1st drive sounded like I had broken the club that really gave me a good scare, lol. However, this club has a very unique impact sound which I quickly started to enjoy. During a round later that day I discovered that I was driving the ball extremely straight even on a few mis-hits but I was getting an additional 20 yards on average with pure shots (295 range) over my Callaway Big Bertha and Burner Bubble. Really don't understand the earlier comments posted regarding less distance with this club, it is definitely not the results I have beeng getting since day one. The only negative comment I can make is that the stock TM grip is terrible. I opted for a soft, wrapped Winn grip and could not be happier with this purchase. The $160 I saved over the R580 was truly unexpected. I highly recommend this driver if you are a low handicap player who generates higher clubhead speeds, you will not be disappointed.

This is a very good club for the money. I picked it up on Ebay about a year ago for $100. There is nothing on the market that I am interested in changing to. Mine is an 8.5 with stiff shaft...It is very stiff feeling unless you hit it where you are supposed to. There are some complaints about the club bit let's face it...If you are like me your drive comes and goes with any driver. Most of us should hit 3-wood off the tee most of the time anyway... As far as Taylormade discontinuing it...I bet that charging $3-500 for other models was the motivation for this.

Just got this club and it added at least 30-40yds to my drive. Best part is you can find it brand new in most shops for $99 since it has been discontinued. Highly recommend it as a sure value brick on a stick.

I could not agree more with the review below. I made the same exact upgrade from the 360 Ti to the 420 Burner with the stock shaft. I bought it mid-season last year and it was the worst mistake I could have made. I was lucky to hit 3 fairways per round. Previously with the 360 I would hit 7 to 8 on a really windy day and 10 to 11 more on a calm day. This club is attractive because it is a taylor made. If the exact club was labeled by a lesser known manufacturer there would be no discussion on this club, even if were available for $50 on closeout. It is a poor golf club that will not be reliable over time. The truth of the matter is when I purchased the club in July 2003 I was a 10.5 index. I ended the 2003 season a 14.0. My index swelled beacuse of this club and it's unpredictable performance. The 360Ti is a much superior golf club. I have not tried any of the 500 series products. I will probably purchase the Mizuno 001 Driver with a Aldila NX 85 gram shaft after crucsing that combo at a Mizuno demo day. Do yourself a favor and don't let a "good price" on this club make the game more frustrating for you.

'Upgraded' from a 360Ti 9.5 stock stiff shaft to Burner 420 9.5 stock stiff shaft. Worst purchase ever. I hit the 360Ti straight and 250yards every time. The Burner 420 has an open face and I sliced it 9 times out of 10, lost balls and killed my handicap playing 3 of the tee. I now have an R580 9.5 stock stiff shaft. The R580 is impressive. With a slightly closed face I now have no problems hitting it straight and long. Far superior club to the 420 and longer than the 360Ti.

Model Reviewed: Taylor Made Burner 420 Driver

After giving this driver a very luke warm review after a couple of times out, I spent the whole year becoming the shortest hitter in my foursome. With the stock shaft, this is just not a long club. I think a lot of the great reviews for this club, are rationalized after getting a great price for it on e-bay or whatever. It is a forgiving club however, and even with the stock shaft I hit a lot of fairways. Not one to give up on a club, I had it reshafted with a Stiff flex YS-7 shaft from Graphite Design...also put a grip on it that wasn't just a smooth piece of rubber like the original. Immediately I am hitting the ball up to 20 yard farther, right down the middle with no swing changes at all. This YS-7 shaft makes the original Burner Lite, feel like a firm garden hose. I suspect this is why Taylor Made gave up on this series of clubs so quickly...

Model Reviewed: Burner 420 9.5 stiff

I shopped & shopped, and this driver is a great value. I hit this club for the first time today & only shanked 3 out of a big bucket; the rest were in the center of the range. I used to slice almost every drive with my softer-shaft driver. I think initially I have given up a few yards with this driver, but the shortest distance between two points is a straight line... This club hits straight – even if I swing with everything I’ve got. I was also impressed with the 9.5 loft. I have always used a 10.5, but had no trouble getting the 9.5 to get the ball in the air.

My game has since fallen off since purchasing this drive but it isnt the drivers fault at all, i just dont practice since graduating high school. I switched from a titleist j-vs and i have got to say, this driver is so much easier to hit. I dont hit it quite as far but i do hit it straiter. It looks goofy and not traditional at all but who cares if you are a weekend duffer who looks for a place to drink beer and not get hasseled. I really like it and and pretty happy with it but i do have one complaint, it is kinda light in weight. I feel as if i put my left nut into the swing and kill it but it doesnt have the zest as my other drivers but it is strait. Over all a great buy for the money and it gets you the new 400 cc craze that seems to be sweeping the golfing nation.
