I am 14 and i bought this driver 3 months ago. They say its very forgiving but i disagree, but the distance is great!I would normally shoot in the mid 80's with my old Callaway, but i tend to shoot in th 90's with the 420 Burner. From not being able to put the ball in the fariway.

See my first review dated Feb 10, 2003 first. No muscle pain now ... went to the range with a club-maker wanting to re-shaft the club as since February, I had gotten used to this club and always try to kill it. When I swing hard, it tends to have a higher launch angle when it goes straight …or high slice / low hook it bad. Plus … I just bought a Taylor Made Raylor 16 degrees with a Aldila HM-40 Tour Gold 95 stiff shaft ... smoked this one regularly at 210-235 yards ... so I figured a new heavier shaft will allow me to swing harder with the BurneR 420. The club-maker said to me I need to gain the feel of this club by having a much more relax grip ... I have not yet gotten used to the new grip pressure but the first 3-4 shots I hit with a much more relax grip and tempo got me back to consistency and better launch angle ... so I need to practice more. The above suggests that the reviews here are accurate. Just let the club do the job and swing easy ... don't try to kill it as I am 6' 1" and 200 lbs ... and in fact lost about 15 lbs since my Feb review of this club. So couple with the usual desire to get more distance by swinger hard … I may have forgotten that I did well with this club when my arm was working at 60%! Will probably post another review here when I decide on re-shafting … and found the right shaft.

Having heard glowing reviews about this club I decided to picked one up on e-bay (9.5* / Reg flex). I was really impressed how easy this club was to hit. The stock regular shaft felt good and mis-hits were forgiving and straight. Distance was better than I expected, but shot consistancy ball after ball made me a believer. I have six different drivers that I either built or purchased over the last couple years and this has turned out to be my favorite.

Model Reviewed: Taylor Made Burner 420 Driver

I'm not a great golfer and had such a bad slice with my previous driver that I just left it in the bag and used my 3-Wood off the tee. Saw this club on sale about a month ago and it just had such a great feel that I decided to give it a try. Belive me, this is the perfect club for the novice golfer as well. My slice almost completely disappeared and my distance off the tee easily gained 30 yards. I have hit over 270 off the tee, and split the fairway, incredible improvement. I play with a friend who scores mid-80's, and one my first drive with the 420 my shot beat his distance and went arrow straight. Instead of his normal "smile" at my drive, he shouted "WOW", then said "Let me see that club"... guess he'll be showing up with one soon too. The 420 has it all. Great feel, great balance, forgiving on mis-hits and a great sound when you connect. Taylor Made really did it right with this one!

After reading for tens of hours on the internet and especially this site I went out and bought the burner 420 about 5 months ago. I am 56 years old and my swing speed is about 100 give or take 5. I only play about 9 holes a week but have concentrated on my swing this year. Anyway, I love this club! I swing about 80% and my drives go from 250 to 290 and in the fairway. I played 9 holes today and nine last week with 9 out of ten drives in the fairway (a lot right down the middle) and one drive just in the rough. My shortest drive was about a 225 high ball. and most were about 270. What a great feeling with this club. I am trying out different balls but so far have good distance and results from the Precept utri extra distance. Any suggestions. All in all this is a great club. Thanks to golfreview I bought it.

Model Reviewed: Taylor Made BurneR 860

This review is actually for the European R860, but I think that the two clubs are virtually identical. All I can say is wow. I bought the 10.5 degree club for £100 off ebay fitted with the new Graffalloy Blue (stiff) shaft, and the results that I have seen have been amazing. I used to use the TM 300Ti, but found that although my good drives were very, very good, my shot dispersal pattern was a little too eratic for my tastes, and also slightly too low. On my first round with the R860 I noticed instant results, trajectories were much higher (but not balloon like) and much, much more consistent in direction. Distances were excellent (my best was 315yrds on a slight downhill hole, which compares to a best of 325 with my 300Ti) and the little that I lost compared with the 300Ti was more than made up for by fairways hit. All in all a fabulous club, and was even able to work the ball left and right (although not as much as the 300Ti). I would envisage my 10 handicap dropping as I result of buying this club. Highly, highly recommended, and an absolute bargain too. Shop around and you should be able to pick them up for under £150.

The sound this club makes at impact is astounding. The ball catapults off the face and screams down the fairway. If you swing this stick with good tempo and confidence your tee shots will blow past the places you are used to playing from on your favorite course. Take the time to find one on the web while they are still around. This thing takes any of the new "hot" drivers to the cleaners. It is a piece of equipment that got lost in the shuffle.

Model Reviewed: TaylorMade Burner R420

I cannot understand why TaylorMade went away from this club to support the R500 series!! For the last 2 years, I was on a quest for a new driver that I foolishly let go for "modern technology". Every time I got on the course, I was dreading the mistake I made by letting the old driver go. Currently using a taylormade 300 9.5*, but cannot hit it straight for anything! My slice was managable with the old club, but everything else I tried, brought it out. I narrowed down the search to the TaylorMade 580 and Cobra 427. I ALMOST got the 580, since I cannot bear the 427's impact noise. For you who have heard it, you know what I mean. Everyone else, go hit one and see what I am talking about. It is LOUD! And doesnt go any further. the 580 has a feel to it...I cannot put my finger on it...almost plastic, fake, on impact. I started reading on line about the 420 and how it was shelved for the 500 series. I happened to go to the local pro shop and they had one in a 9.5* stiff graphite. JUST what I wanted! I took it, the 580 and 3 buckets of balls out to the range. Half a bucket with 580, then half with the 420. OBVIOUS difference in performance! NO platic feel...ironically, no plastic insert in the 420, like the 500's have. Hmmm... And the distance is awesome! Good feel, good control, good distance, awesome price...sold. AND it was $150 less than the USED 580! On the course, it is fabulous. Tee it up higher since it is a bigger head and let it go! I hit every fairway the first time out...a first for me in years!! Still got a little fade, but no more banana slices. (psychological...????) It just has such a solid feel and looks good at address. I read the "flames" on the driver ar cheap and cheesy looking. I dont mind plus I dont look at the shaft when I swing anyway! I tried hitting it off the fairway once, for grins, on a par 5 (250 yds out)and it can be done. Would still prefer my 3 wood, but had to do it. Overall, a great club!! They are popping up on Ebay all the time. Most from trade ins or stores that sold off their stock wholesale. If you can grab one, do it!!!

Customer Service

It didnt come with a head cover, but was able to get the limited edition Red White and Blue TaylorMade cover locally for a good price. No other need for service....and hope to keep it that way!

Greatest driver on the planet. I have always had trouble with drivers before, but this magical piece of equipment has me consistently 300 yards in the fairway and reaching par 5's in two is always a possibility. Definately buy this driver. You can find it cheap on e-bay.

TJ Founder recommended I try this club out. I was eyeballing the TM TP 510 after I experienced the new feel of the face. I could feel the compression and projection of the ball. It encouraged me to swing though, possibly finishing better that I ever had in my swing. In any case, the result was astonishing. I was starting to compete again in distance and accuracy. TJ is putting a Aldila NV to the head after I tried several top shafts last week. A beautiful club for my swing of 94-95 mph. I am quite satisfied and will not look at another driver....for a while! :)
