La Jolla Knife Fairway Woods

La Jolla Knife Fairway Woods

DESCRIPTION

  • The two outside blades act as outriggers, which resist twisting in the rough, and are more forgiving of off-center shots
  • The center blade performs as a rudder to keep the club moving straight on all shots, on all types of surfaces
  • The three blades also keep the sole of the club from touching the ground, which can add a significant amount of distance to each shot

Model Reviewed: La Jolla Knife Hybrid 4 Stiff

Like many others here I thought the knife was a sales gimmick. As they are quite cheap on eBay and having read some good reviews, I decided to try one out.

Mine is the Knife Hybrid 4, smaller than the Knife Fairway Woods, but the knife pattern on the sole is the same. The Hybrids are intended to replace the equivalent irons. It is almost an inch longer than my 3 Iron. The head is small and feels a little heavy but overall the club feels well balanced at address.

After a few hits to get the correct alignment I was hooked. This is fast becoming a best friend and it’s in the bag to stay. I have a great sense of confidence with it and the small head size and heft is right. I’m sure I don’t hit the exact sweet spot very often and my swing is not always too good but this club still hits the ball dead straight, launches it high and always seems to go the same distance. Many times I’ve been surprised at the good result from a swing and contact that were a bit off.

If you like to work the ball then it’s probably not for you. Straight is fine with me…makes my golf game much more enjoyable. If the ball goes where you are aiming you don’t find so much trouble and the mid handicapper is more likely to hit the green. I’ve not had any fat shots yet, maybe due to this knife blade design. The ball launches very well from most lies, within reason. I’m sure it swishes through the fluffy grass without losing as much speed as other clubs, and the club head doesn’t twist.

I’m hitting about 180 to 190 yds, higher flight than my 3 Iron and with a soft landing, and also straight. What more could you want on those long Par 3s and those second shots on the long par 4s?

Model Reviewed: La Jolla Knife 3 wood

i was sure this club was a gimmic but I was getting desperate. I'm often facing long second shots but my slow swing never got a 3 wood up in the air until I picked up The Knife with a senior shaft on eBay for $12! It has a heavy head which feels nice, and the dark blue color looks great. The 'fins' on the sole really keep me from hitting shots fat since they hit the ground first while the clubhead keeps zooming along. It's like teeing up your ball in the fairway since you get about 3/16 margin of error from the fins. It's 43" long and I'm cutting an inch for more control but this club is for real. I'm finally hitting down on the ball with this club, something I'm unable to do with my other fairway woods.

Originally saw these clubs on the Golf Channel and although they looked impressive I was skeptical. As I didn't have a 7 wood I bought the Knife 7 from rockbottomgolf.com through Ebay. Liked it the minute I swung it. I have since gotten the 3,5 & 9 from directgolf.co.uk on a but 2 get 1 free deal. These clubs always seem to sit perfectly when addressing the ball and I rarely hit a bad shot with them. I don't care that some people think they are a gimmick, I LIKE them........ a lot.

I love this club...replaces my 3/4 irons and is very versatile...can hit it off just about any lie..better than anything else I have tried...looking for the 5 wood next. If that works out, I may even replace my 3 woods from Cleveland. Enough said, it's in the bag.

These clubs are for real. I have the 9 wood and have hit it off the turf, from the rough, and off the tee on par 3's. I have ordered the 11 wood, I love them!

Bought the 5 and 9 then went back and bought the 3. All are spot on. So much so I have bought a 3& 9 each for Mum & Dad for Xmas. Max price I paid for each one? $47.00. Ebay rocks. Buy this club with confidence, it really does strike the ball well and I can put the 5 on a green at 180 6/10 times and I have only tried it twice on the practice and twice on a course. Go to rockbottomgolf.com if you want to see how this club SHOULD be priced!! Enjoy.

Model Reviewed: La Jolla Knife 5 Wood

One great club. I bought it on a whim, and thought, "how bad can it be?" I have hit some amazing shots with this club, both from rough (as long as it's not too deep) and very tight lies. Of course, it doesn't cure a really bad swing, but it can make a marginally bad swing produce a decent shot. I think the three blades on the bottom really do work and there is noticeably more heft on the bottom of the club which helps get the ball in the air, and it carries as long as any other fairway wood I have hit - well. The compact head also makes you commit to your shot. I highly recommend this club. I am getting the Tour Knife 3 wood next!

Best club in my bag. I can't hit this thing wrong. Great for long par 3's and fantastic for those 185-200 yard shots. Equally effective out of the rough. $140 price tag seems very cheap for such a great club.

Model Reviewed: La Jolla Knife

Unlike some of the other reviews, I didn't know anything about this club and certainly hadn't heard of it. It came recommended to me from the folks at GolfLab in Palo Alto as a good "get out of jail" club or a solid 7W for the rough and off the fairway. Looks are sharp. Head cover too. Kind of an unsual appearance to say the least + I just had a hard time seeing how I could hit the ball off a tight fairway with this club. The clubhead is heavier (and maybe smaller?) than usual and I could see how this club might work well in deep rough. I had my doubts, however, for any typical fairway or tight lie shot. Leith at GolfLab just told me to "try and see". Anyway, I had myself one made up with an Apache MFS 30+ shaft in 5.0 stiffness on the PCS scale. Price was reasonable at $180. Now fast forward to Sharp Park in Pacifica. I got myself in a little trouble on the 14th or 15th down the left side. Decided the Knife would probably be the better club to try in this instance. Good swing and boom! Super easy cutting through the rough and nice clean contact. Nice little fade flight right onto the green from about 180-190 out. I tried to not muscle this and let the club do the work and I think that's the way to go. So, great results from the rough so far. I also tried this on the 18th fairway, just to see if my doubts about a tight lie might be a problem. Well ... I was proven wrong. It worked great from the tight lie. I got a chance to work it again this past weekend at the Cypress Golf par 3 course in Daly City. Same results. So it's staying in the bag for those 180-190 situations.

Model Reviewed: La Jolla Knife 3 Wood

I have always been a skeptic of those late night infomercials but I went out anyway and bought the Knife used and I have to say this is one of the best 3 woods or any fairway wood that I have ever used. It is very forgiving and it really does hit the ball very well even out of thick rough. You don't have to take my word for it, because who am I, but I think if you are looking for a new 3 wood with some pop, you have to try it.
