Model Reviewed: Sonartec NP99 17º Aldila NV65R

I´m a 11 hcp and I don´t change clubs frequently, except for the fairway woods. I´ve own a Callaway Squarewood 15º 3 wood, pretty straight off the tee but useless off the fairway and a Titleist 906F4 18.5º that tends to balloon and makes only a little more distance that my 21º Titleist hybrid. I always have been partial to the Sonartec brand and I found at the Golfbidder website a NP99 17º 4W with stock Aldila NV65R shaft in pristine condition, a club I tested a long time ago from a pro and that left me highly impressed. I also have read rave reviews from Terry, The Wedge Guy and Eidolon Wedges president. Please read his article "Have you forgotten the 4-wood?" at Oobgolf.com site.
So I bought it cheap and ditched the 3W & 5W. First, it´s a beauty at adress position. Perfect sized head in midnigth blue, shaft in blue, GolfPride Dual grip and a premium headcover. Second, it´s the only one fairway wood I´ve found that is at the same time easy to hit straight, left, right, high and low, cuts... everything. I didn´t expect that from a Sonartec, they are very demanding clubs. Third, I can baby it to 5W range or go for it to 3W range. Usually that results in push or pulls, not with this. I didn´t find a situation on the course where I missed the 3W length or the 5W hight. It´s a perfect ballflight. And now I have a spot in my bag to my much-adored gap wedge. Believe me, few of the actual brands provide fairway woods with this quality level, despite the new technology shafts that can make a difference. Take one cheap while you can.

I just bought this club today and I have to say its the best wood i've ever used! I just came back from the range and i could conistently hit 160 yards straight and I'm 12. It's extremely easy to hit and has incredible accuracy. I would reccommend this to anyone looking for a 5 wood

This a 2 to 3 year old model. I got a great deal on a brand new one ($99). This has the Hst Penley Stiff 77grams shaft. I absolutely love it. The feel is great and the contact feedback is phenomenal. It sets up perfect and is a as long as my old 3 wood. Must buy if you can still find it.

With the right shaft this club is a LONG 3 wood, about 10 yards behind the driver (Ping G2 with the same shaft). Excellent off the fairway but you've to tee it low, if you tee it up all, I've resorted to knocking a tee up from the ground with this club. Penetrating ball flight and easy to shape shots with.

Customer Service

Club originally came with an Aldila 75R/S shaft fitted, but re-shafted by Sonartec UK, with a Aldila 65S. Superb service.

I've been playing this club for 6 months, it's long & solid. Great trajectory & sets up square off the deck. I just bought a 7 wood to replace my Vsteel. Prices are coming down.

I WAS PLAYING THE SONARTEC SS-03 MODEL FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS AND WENT FOR THE UPGRADE TO THE NP-99 AND HAVE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER. I HAVE THE ORANGE ALDILA NVS 65S SHAFT AND IT IS GREAT. I HAVE BEEN PLAYING THE 13* SSO3 AND WHEN I SWITCHED I WENT TO THE 14*. IT IS BY FAR THE LONGEST,MOST WORKABLE AND MANAGABLE FAIRWAY WOOD I HAVE EVER PLAYED. IF YOU HAVE NEVER PLAYED SONARTEC FAIRWAY WOODS CHECK OUT EBAY THEY ARE PRICED GREAT ON THERE. BE CAREFUL ON WHICH ONE YOU BUY THOUGH. FOR MID AND HIGH HANDICAP GOLFERS I WOULD LOOK AT THE SSO2 OR THE SS2.5 MODEL. FOR LOW HANDICAP AND SCRATCH GOLFERS I WOULD LOOK FOR THE SS03,SS3.5 OR THE NP-99.THEY ARE BY FAR THE BEST FAIRWAY WOODS IN PLAY TODAY.

This is an extremely fine club. I hit some balls on the range with it prior to my round this morning. I used it on a number of short par 4s and par 5s. The club has nice feedback and with my swing the ball tends to draw. Very accurate, consistent and about as long as my 3 wood.

I purchased this club to replace my R580 3 wood which hits the ball too high for my taste. The general consensus was that the Sonartec hits the ball on a lower penatrating trajectory. My wood is fitted with an Aldila NV65 firm shaft which seems to suite my swing speed. Imagine my disappointment when I teed the ball up and found that the Sonartec hit the ball just as high as the R580. It took me a bit of time to find the correct tee height (which should be very low with the head of the tee just above ground level). Off the fairway this club gives a very penetrating Flight and good roll on landing and is easy to hit. However like most fairway woods a poor shot will be punished severly. When I make an unbalanced swing it tends to slice the ball quite severely with a consequential loss of distance. Smooth swings are rewarded with excellent results.

I've used all kinds of fairway woods and have found some that worked, but never one I could fully be comfortable with. I tried the Sonartec on the advice of a salesperson friend. He said it was a great wood with quality manufacturing. I took out a 4 wood (since i'm having a tough time getting the ball to fly) and was impressed with my first trip to the range. The club is easy to hit and has a good flight line. I thought Sonartec woods were only for low-handicap players, but I was pleasantly surprised. This club is destined to stay in my bag for a long time. One draw back is the cost. I've seen it running for $339 at some places. I paid about $250. If you can get it at a good price, or if price doesn't matter, give this one a try.

this club has magic in it. hottest face i have ever used and the stock shaft is the fantastic aldia Nv 65 green it is painted blue to match the blue metal flake head. it is almost as far as my driver . I have made the best shots of my life with this club. great set-up and so balanced it almost swings it self. it is not cheap but after you play a few rounds you will see the magic. this club would be fine for mid hdcp's and lower.
