Callaway Big Bertha Fusion Irons

Callaway Big Bertha Fusion Irons

DESCRIPTION

Callaway Golf has weight distribution technology. The Tunite cradle allows 77% of the mass to be positioned around the extreme perimeter of the iron for ultra-high MOI and a low, deep CG; the TPU SenSert helps reduce vibration for great feel, plus eliminating the hollow sound and feel of an oversized cavity-back for a crisp, responsive sound; the lightweight 6-4 titanium face insert is 22% lighter than a comparable steel face allowing the weight to be distributed around the perimeter for faster ball speed.

Played thes clubs for 2 years now. I can say they are excellent. I have 9 clubs - 5 iron to 60 degree lob - very consistent throughout the set and great feel. Some mates have tried them and said they would replace their set with these clubs if upgrading. Got them for $100 each through ebay. I'm comfortable with the size of the clubface and confident of the ability to work them if needed. Second-hand bargain!

I don't generally write reviews, but since the reviews on this site greatly helped in my decision, I thought I'd add my two cents. I am just getting back into golf after a 12 year or so hiatus, and thought it time to buy new clubs as well. (The shoots in the 80's is 12 years old, so who knows?)

The equipment now is certainly different to say the least. My old irons were Yamaha Secrets which, at the time, were very nice clubs. Being somewhat of a purist, I was not interested in the "new" hybrid type irons, or enormous sized irons. However, also now being 55 years old, I did want an iron that was a bit more forgiving, particularly since my swing(and the rest of me)is a bit rusty.

After doing a great deal of reading and looking at the limitless selection, I decided that the Fusion irons fit the bill; a certain degree of forgivness in a more traditional sized club, with the added enhancement of new technology. No, I did not go down to my local retailer to hit countless clubs. I have found that for me, that system doesn't work very well, at least not at a stage where I haven't played in years, and my swing is anything but consistent. I knew what I was looking for in a club, and as I said, I did a great deal of reading with as much "con" as I could find. I figured if I could find an iron I liked, I would fine tune it down the road; lie, grip, and even shafts if need be. ( I have Callaway's factory RCH 75i regular flex graphite which so far seems to fit me well. Recent clocked iron club head speed was 87 mph.)

I am very pleased to report that these clubs are everything they are touted to be. "Butter" is very descriptive, seemingly hit after hit. So far I have found these clubs to be roughly ten yards longer with actually less effort in the swing. The elevation is high, but that is to my taste, as I have always preferred to hit a high iron shot. My seven iron is effortlessly going 160 yards with a nice tall arc, and the sound of the ball off the club face on center is, well there is no sound. Even miss hits off the toe stay in line with maybe a 15 yard distance penalty for the seven. Even the fact that you can readily tell you've hit off the toe says something. I think there is pretty good "feel" to these clubs. I'm still a few months away from from trying to shape shots again, but I think these clubs are perfectly capable. Oddly, I have also noticed an occassional slight draw with these clubs. Why, I do not know. Generally, when on, my iron shots are straight, and when a bit off, they fade. A draw is a whole new world!

Yes, you can certainly seriously mis-hit these irons, but frankly it seems hard to do. These irons are actually a bit smaller in size than mid-size which might scare someone looking for "game improvement" clubs. At least they are a bit smaller than my Yamahas which were "mid-sized" cavity backs almost 20 years ago when I bought them. I certainly wouldn't let the smaller size detract you. They sure seem to hit like game improvement irons.

Yes, these irons are a bit more expensive than most. However, I bought mine from Callaway's Pre-Owned site as "like new" for $769.00. They were in fact like new, and unexpectedly absolutely spotless. There would seem to be little reason to buy new as long as the clubs are available on Callaway's site. I have not had to get involved with Callaway's customer service, but understand that it is excellent.

I have also now purchased more Callaway, including an FT-5 driver, and two Fusion fairway woods. I haven't had the opportunity to really hit them yet. The three wood is larger than my old Yamaha metal driver. The FT-5 is literally three to four times as large. Should be interesting.

I hope this is of help to perspective Fusion buyers.

I currently own X-14 Steelhead Pro-Series irons. I also own a Hawkeye VFT driver and 3W and 5W Steelhead fairway woods.

I am getting fitted for the Fusion Irons, FT-5 driver and Fusion fairway woods on 9/4. I can't wait.

I've been a Callaway fanboy for some time now and it's great to read all the positive reviews for all of the equipment I like.

I would also like to nominate my wife for sainthood for being understanding and "letting" me get new clubs.

I will be playing more now that I realized I'm too old for more active sports. I see myself shooting in the 80's by next summer. These clubs will definetly help get me there.

Customer Service

AWESOME!!! I bought my original clubs new on Ebay. I wanted to get them fitted for me, but a few places I went to they wouldn't change the lie angle because of the way the shaft enters the clubhead on Callaways. The stores I went to would change the length of the shafts and grips, but it was a little expensive. I called Callaway and they did everything FREE OF CHARGE!!! The only out of pocket was for the box to send my clubs in. SHIPPING BACK AND FORTH WAS INCLUDED. Finally, the only thing I had to pay for was a new shaft on the driver. Instead of charging me $115 for the shaft, CS rep gave me the "good guy price" of $95.

Callaway made me a customer for life with their service.

Follow up: I've played these irons for nealy two yrs. and have been amased at the level of forgivness! Golf Digest even mentioned in their "Hot List" how good is this club?..3rd yr. in a row that it has made the List! Smooth as butter, the previous reviewer...jr needs to Man up if he thinks this club does not have any forgiveness, his wrist must still be broke! I continue to go to the demo days hitting other irons and cannot find any club that feels sooo nice at impact as far I'm concerned! Callaway sure has done a sweet job with this iron and I am thankful! Consistant, predictable! I know single digit handicappers and double digit handicappers using this club, they get it done!

Sweet, bought mine from callawaypreowned.

I have used the golfreview.com site for many years to help decide what clubs to buy. I finally had to sign up to write about the Callaway Fusions.
WOW! That is all I can say after 6 months with these in the bag. I love the set-up at address over any other Callaway irons. The face is easy to aim and the ball comes off the clubface with satisfaction. You still get feedback from the feel, but off center hits do not punish you in feel or distance. Crisp hits are so rewarding and you can tell immediately if it was on the screws. I am looking for a 2-iron they are so long and forgiving.
I had been playing Mizuno forged cavity back for 10 years (left handed MP-19) and tried alot of different irons, but kept coming back to the Mizunos. Not this time. I first hit them at a demo day and knew they were special. I have only hit the graphite shafts, so can't speak for the steel shafts, but these are the "perfect clubs". Don't you wonder why Callaway keeps making them 3 years after the introduction? Even they know they have a winner here. Fortunately I found these for 1/2 price off of the MSRP, but they are worth the full price if you have to pay it! Stop reading reviews, go hit a set and you will understand!

I bought my fusions at the end of last year used for $400. What a deal. Before I really got to use them, I broke my wrist which perhaps hasnt healed yet, but as of now, they have been a big disappointment. I know that this reviw is in the minority, but I find them NOT FORGIVING. When I have a solid hit, they are good, but just a little miss is very costly to me. Relative to my old irons, they have added 5 strokes to my average game,,,, sorry

I am 22 fresh out of college and playing more golf this summer than ever before. M

My friend is a volunteer martial and starter at Laurel Hill Golf Course in Burke Virginia. This course is the nicest Fairfax County Public Course and is not a forgiving course, but with these clubs it can be.

My friend, a huge Callaway fan bought a set of the Fusion irons off of the Callaway Preowned site, and let me tell you he has never shot better. At first with these clubs he was over hitting many shots, because the clubs are so great.

These clubs are honestly so forgiving and they hit so crisp, and dead center if the golfer has a good swing. I am not a great golfer I shoot low 90's and use a set of Wilson clubs I received when I was 16. However, after seeing my friends improvement I am getting a set of the Fusions.

All the reviews I have read are dead on, and I believe these clubs are real deal. Personally I am working on my putting because I generally 3 put 55% of the time, however these clubs will take me within the next year into the mid 80's.

It is simple folks, most of your scoring comes down to 100 yards of the whole, and with these clubs you will get there, leaving the rest up to your short game. I always though it didn't matter what clubs you shot because I had crap clubs and my friend had high end clubs and we shot about the same until he used the Fusions. He in the last 5 games we played has gone from over par to par almost every hole, and because of that convinced me that the Fusions really will make a difference in your game.

Hope this review helps and although the clubs are pricey, these will be the irons you need again, and with the customer service Callaway offers you won't have to worry about the clubs because if anything happens Callaway will take care of you.

Customer Service

If you are worried about price, their returns and service are amazing. My friend from above had a driver with graphite shaft, and from using the hitting ranges with turf the driver head fell off, because the shaft cracked. Callaway replaced the club, no charge and it was probably 2 years old at that time.

I have not used a club similar because I have used such a low end club and done decent shooting in the 90's. All in all I can't wait to get my Fusions, because I know without a doubt it will take my golf game into the 80's

I bought a set from 4 iron to sw from the local golf course pro shop. Some poor sap traded them in and I got them for 250 bicks!!!!! I almost fell down when I asked the pro what he wanted for them. Any way 8 seconds later I was the owner and let me tell you they are LONG. 175yds out, 7 iron flew over the green! I guess the Ti face works. Love the clubs and the price!

One word describes these irons,...excellent! I even enjoy my bad rounds by comparison simply due to the feel of these irons. They say golf is 60% feel, well these irons take care of that stat. Distance can sometimes be a little hard to judge only because a titanium face is pretty hot and the ball really explodes off of it. PW for me is usually 120 to 125 yards, these go with a good swing to about 130 or more. Anyway, I steep out on any course with a new found confidence, highly recommend to any golfer 16 handicap and under. If your over 16 handicap, I highly recommend either the callaway X18's or the new Callaway X20's. All these mentioned clubs will not only bring your game to the next level, but you'll fall in love with the feel of a Callaway product.

Customer Service

Top notch. Their fitting system is reaching new levels and Callaways staff is always re-inventing golf equipment.
