Callaway X-16 Set Irons

Callaway X-16 Set Irons

DESCRIPTION

The standard X-16 Irons have a shorter blade length and a higher topline than the X-14 irons, with the benefit of Callaway Golf''s new "Notch" weighting. This moves the weight to the perimeter for strong, confidence-enhancing look behind the ball. Each iron has a low center of gravity for strong trajectory and great forgiveness, a cambered sole for better turf interaction, and a soft satin finish with a contrasting, sandblasted hitting area. The graphite shafts give you the flex options that you want - with the options to benefit varied swing speeds and styles. Also available in proprietary, ultralight, uniflex Constant Weight steel shaft manufactured by True Temper.

I normally shoot in the 87-95 range. I bought a set of X-16 irons about 18 months ago. Clubs came with R-flex 75-g graphite stock shafts. I really enjoy these clubs, however I have to close the club face of 3-6 irons to about 11 O'clock in order to hit them straight. Last X-mas I told a local PGA professional at Dick's Sporting Goods about this and he checked out my swing with tape .After hitting several balls, the tape confirmed that I need to play with a 2-degree upright lie. So Dick's Sporting Goods charges $4/club for lie adjustment. I played a round yesterday with newly bent clubs and what a difference it makes... for 18 holes, I did not slice once with my iron, now I have a neutral set up and ball flights higher and straight. I liked my clubs before, I enjoy them much better now... Hopefully they will help me play consistently in the 80s

So believe in 'custom fit' clubs. I cannot believe that only 2-degree upright lie makes a HUGE improvement in my game.

Enjoy your game

I have been playing X-16's for 3 years now and have over 100 rounds on my set with rifle tour stiff shafts. They are very forgiving and the 3,4,5 irons are amazing. My handicap went down from 12 to 9 over the three years. However, the higher numbered clubs are chunky and lack feel. I lost 10 yards on the pitching wedge from my previous set (125 down to 115 max) and can't tell you how many skulled chips I've had due to the heaviness and clunkiness of the PW and 9. These clubs are super for a high handicapper but not for finnesse shots.

These irons feel right and are well put together. Currently an excellent value in the market. It took me a few rounds to get used to them. The uniflex shaft allowed me to get good results while calming down my swing. These are great for game improvement.

Used them for 20+ rounds and traded them in. Somewhat my fault, I had a Taylor Made Super Steel set for 5 yrs. with Regular flex shafts. Thought I was up-grading, but I was wrong. X-16's have uni-flex shaft and I was losing 15-20 yards a shot. My best shots would always leak to the right. I traded them in today for Adams a2 OS with reg. flex shafts. Now I'm sure I have up graded my equipment.

I played these irons for two years and along with plenty of practice they really helped develop my game. I worked my way from a high 90's shooter to a low 80's and could even break 80 on occasion. Some how I got it in my head that I was at a new level and I was ready for more of a "players" club.
Biggest mistake I have ever made not only was I unable to play good with the blades I wound up altering my swing and developing the dreaded shank. It got so bad I almost gave up the game forever.
Well the high dollar blades are gone and the x16's are back in the bag. I've still not been able to get all the way back to where I was but I'm getting there. Bottom line is these clubs are as beautiful to look at as they are to hit and they are here to stay for a long time.

Customer Service

The best in the world... Period.

I never thought they could fit the type of technology into an iron that they could in a driver head. Was I ever wrong. I bought my wife a set of Tommy Armor 845 U's which have a great rating on the Maltby Playability scale. I ended up hitting these shorter graphite ladies shafts farther that my mens steel regular shafts. That planted the seed. I've been playing my Wilson RM forged irons for a long time now (10-12 years) and the distance control when you hit them well is awesome but if you're just a bit off it can amplify your mistake to where you have to go up and down for your par too regularly.
I picked up these X-16's because they too were rated highly on the Maltby scale. WOW. I am blowing all my irons over the greens because they are so long and forgiving.
My 4 iron goes as far as my 4 hybrid now but the trajectory is just a bit flatter.
I got my irons from Callaway pre owned, Like New Condition... They are just about brand new Now wear on the grooves or face of the club at all.
If you shoot in the 90's from the blues? I would recommend this set. Those long par 4's are gonna be so much easier to deal with and the short par 4's are almost a guaranteed par. Long par 3's are gonna be less stressfull as well.
Get these irons you won't regret it.

I used to hit my 5 iron 165... Yesterday I hammered one 190 yards. I am the shortest iron player in my group too.
All this may equal $$$$$$ this summer if I get my distances figured out.

PS Rifle shafts are the Shiznit

Model Reviewed: Update on Service of Callaway - X-16 Irons

As I reported before, I sent back my X-16 irons to Callaway to replace UL 55-g R-flex with 75-g R-flex graphite shafts, free of charge. According to the tracking numbers from UPS, Callaway received it, reshafted and shipped out the next day... This is a very very good customer service, Callaway replaced both the shafts and grips for free... The whole process took exactly one week to get my clubs back. Impressive

I just started playing for real two seasons ago. I purchased a set of junk starter clubs to see if the game would hold my interest. Needless to say, it did and I was hooked. This year I decided to get a better set of clubs so that I could get my game to the next level. I tried just about everything I could get my hands on in the $400-$600 range and the X-16's are by far THE BEST bang for the buck on the market. These things hit a ton and even better, they hit straight! They are super forgiving and are actually helping me learn to control my shots since I can feel much more.
I am not a great player by any means, but these clubs are definitely a step in the right direction.
Even the more expensive clubs were not as impressive as these. The Callaway X-Tour Forged are amazing, but for $1000 they had better be. The X16's were better than all the rest though and for $450 WAY more affordable than the X-Tours.

I think Callaway got it right with these. I like the smaller head size as compared to the suposed new and improved X-18's, which I tried and really didn't care for. The smaller head, but thicker top line is a great combination, it inspires you to attack the ball. I was able to generate back spin off a hard pan lie, leaving a nice divot as well. These clubs have really picked up my iron play and has put a lot of confidence in my game. If I'm anywhere from 175 yards to 50, I've got a real good chance of putting the ball on the green. Distance is about the same as the RAC LT2's by Taylormade, I may of lost about 5 yards with this set, but the small lack of distance is pretty consistant, which shows that I hit the ball with better control. I'll trade 5 yards for control any day!

Simply put, the look, feel and confidence you get with this set is unmatched in my mind. Callaway didn't have to discontinue this model, they had the perfect combination of game improvement and playability with this club and went ahead and copied it in a larger, clunkier new X-18 model. Run and get these while you can, they're selling cheap on e-bay, you wont be disappointed!

Customer Service

Callaway is the best when it comes to customer service. I've tried to get away from being a fan of Callaway products, but I keep finding reasons to return!

I bought this brand new X-16 irons which come with UL 55-g R-flex graphite shafts, which I thought would help me generate more club head speed due to its light wt, but I turned out that (later I've learned that UL 55-g is a senior shaft) my balls flight too high resulting in a loss of 5-10 yds distance. In addition the PW is difficult to get use to because of if light wt (it took me sometime to get used to it)
I called Callaway and much to my surprise Callaway is willing to reshaft my irons with a 75-g R-flex graphite shaft for FREE, Callaway even send me a RA # so that I can ship them back to Callaway by UPS for free

Customer Service

This is a first class service guys, can't get any better than this, they are even willing to cut new shafts 1/2 shorter if I want them too... This is a service model that everyone needs to follow to keep customers
