Model Reviewed: Maxfli Revolution Black Dot

I just purchased a used set of Maxfli Revolution Black Dots in excellent condition from Golf Galaxy for $150 (no trade-ins) and I am very pleased. My former irons are Mizuno MP 29's which I have been playing for 4 years. I was starting to think that I wanted something with more forgiveness.

In many reviews I have noticed that the term "forgiveness" is very vague. In my opinion forgiveness comes into play when I make "C" quality contact which is missing it either on the heel or toe, or hitting it thin or fat shot on occasion (2-3 out of 10 shots). Of course EVERYONE encounters these four shot mishaps at some point in time, even Tiger.

Thus more forgiveness on my "C" quality swings should give a similar trajectory and distance to that of my "B" or "B+" quality contact. I really don't count on forgiveness to straighten out my shots.

In essence I wanted a club that I didn't have to work as hard to get consistent distance and trajectory from. Speaking of distance, I also wanted more of it from my irons. My MP 29's really needed solid B+ contact for me to carry 175 yards with my 5 iron but my swing speed said that I should be getting 10-15 yards more. When I made "A" or "A+" contact with my Mizuno's I would get that extra club length in distance. Again, I needed something that I didn't have to work so hard for.
So I started looking at the RAC MB's, Forged Callaway's, Wilson Fi5's, and Forged Nike CCI's but in the process came across the Maxfli Revolution's.

When I hit these I just couldn't believe how soft the Maxfli's felt!!! The only ones that felt nearly as soft were the RAC's. In my excitement and just to compare I went out to the car and grabbed my MP 29 5 iron, and the Maxfli's were noticeably softer!!

THE impressive thing about these is that they are easier to get my distance and more consistent in giving it. The forgiveness I was looking for I have found in these clubs. I look forward to playing this summer knowing that I will get more consistent results even with "C" quality contact which should lower my score! The Maxfli's ARE 2 clubs longer than my MP 29's with a higher trajectory in every club to boot!

There is some feedback on mis-hits but not as bad as some of the other clubs I tried. I will say that the MP 29's feel softer than the Maxfli's on thinned and toe mis-hits but not as soft as the Maxfli's on heel and fat mis-hits (and the Maxfli's only loose about 10 yards and have a little lower trajectory on fat shots, whereas fat shots with the MP's were a death knoll).

The Maxfli's also swing more consistently than my MP 29's or any of the other 4 clubs I tested (the RAC's were closest). This should increase anyones contact consistency I would think.

I have been so astonished at the buttery feel of the Maxfli's that I started some heavy scrutiny of the shafts to see if I could uncover anything. I think I have found something in that my set are S300's (same as my MP's) BUT they have the Sensacore cushioning in them. However, my understanding is that this plays more into mis-hits than it does into solid contact.

In any case I am so thoroughly enamored with these irons that I can only highly recommend them.

Customer Service

Although I am primarily a Golf Smith consumer, Golf Galaxy did give me a 30 day in store credit guarantee in case I didn't like the clubs when I played with them.

These clubs DEFINITELY remind me of my MacGregor PCB Tours that I had in their consistency, trajectory and feel (although the MacGregor's didn't have the Sensacore shafts). I traded those clubs in for the MP 29's and I must admit that I now wonder why I ever did. The Maxfli's feel BETTER than the Callaway X Forged and Nike CCI Forged clubs and were far and away better in feel than the Wilson Fi 5's.

I've waited for a couple of things to happen before writing the review.
1) Break 80 (and not just once)
2) Stick w/ the ironset when breaking 80 (as not to have any bias when writing the review)
3) Feel that my game is consistent

Now that I've done all 3, I feel my review will be fair.

Pros:
- Soft feel
This set, being cast and double plated nickel, is softer than many forged sets.
(Comparison sets: MacGregor M675, Callaway X-Tour, Wilson Staff Fi5)
- Very very consistent
Distance control, shot-shape control are absolutely predictable and reliable.
- Spin-rate
Being one of the rare sets which feature blade-like looks with cavity-back forgiveness, the Spin rate on flushed shots are very high. (It's 2sided coin - see below for cons)
This juiced up spin rate equates to very very soft landing and ability to spin back even 7iron.
- Aesthetic beauty
I've dabbled with many different sets of irons in the past. Never put into my bag, but played w/ other sets enough to know. I'm a golf-junkie, what do you expect?
Other than very few sets (ie: TM RAC Forged, TM RAC MB, Titleist 675 MB & CB, Mizuno MP37, 60) this Maxfli Rev set is absolutely beautiful.

Cons
- Spin rate
Too much spin! These irons are not longer than any what's out there. This characteristic is very much similar to Mizuno MP irons. Laser accurate, soft landing, but not the longest of irons.
- Weight
In comparison w/ other forged clubheads, these Rev's are heavy. This equates to heavier swingweight, which is preferred by very good players, but not the general golf community. Make sure to Counter-balance the swingweight to D2 or D3. It's very easy to stick some lighter shafts in and inflate the swingweight to D5!
- Forgiveness
These are players irons. Even though it's cavity back, don't expect the world of forgiveness. While these are "easier" than say Titleist 675MB, these are not for the hackers.

In summary, these babies have come a long w/ me over the past 3yrs, from the time I've started.
Now that I'm 8.1 handicap, I'm moving onto something more.
I'll never let go of these babies. Sentimental values and just something beautiful to look at.

Hope this review helped!

I have to agree with all the positive comments for these clubs. i've just got them of Ebay UK for ONLY £19.50 ($40.00)!!!!!! hardly a mark on them, they look fantastic, classic blade appearance but some cavity-back forgiveness. You can feel the good shot and wil be penalised a bit for an off-centre strike but that's what the lower handicapper probably wants or expects. Why Dunlop stopped making these I have no idea. If you can get your hands on a set and play off 12 or less then go for it.

Good set of clubs, cheap and effective.
Clean lines, minimal offset, great feel.
It does fly a little high for my likings but it might be the regular shaft that I'm using . It provides adequate forgiveness, relatively large sweet spot. This club is recommended for players with handicap below 16, 17 who wants the look and feel of forged muscle back, or if they want to lowere the scores.
It's quite hard to find them now but if you do get em coz it'll be quite cheap.

Customer Service

no need for that.

I got these clubs for a great deal at about $250. When you hit them solid, they are the softest clubs on the market. It feels like hitting a ball of butter. However, beware, because when you don't hit them just right, it feels alot like hitting a rock. This is great feedback to the better player, but if you are anything over a 10 handicap I don't suggest these clubs. They are also forged, so be sure to check the lie angles often, especially if you have a tendency to smash them on the ground after bad shots. But like I said, the one major downfall of these clubs is the harsh feel when not hit correctly. In the winter at the range, when I mis-hit a shot, I have to stop for a couple minutes because of the pain in my hands, and it's not like I have arthritis...I'm 17.

My suggestion is that if you want a good looking, workable, buttery club with a small sweet spot, but at a great price, get these clubs. If not, look elsewhere.

well, talk about a nice deal-i got these little cuties for 140.00 (including shipping off of ebay) I had been plaing the tour edge jbalde-great club, but i was a bit inconsistent with it, so i went back to a cavity back iron. Used to play the taylor made RAC LT. ANyway like the looks of these, minimal offset, clean lines, very blade like in appearance. So off i went-talk about impressed Ihave these with s300 shafts standard lie and loft, lampkin tourline grips and i have to say i love em. Won my club championship with them so i thihnk i will keep em for a while. good distance control, good trajectory as they are, a great set of irons for a great price right now, youcan get them off ebay or other online stores for anywhere from 100-150 bucks and for the price folks --you cant beat em. I love the feel of forged irons and these are close to it in my opinion. anyway, if you are like me and would rather play a good set of clubs for a good price, take a gander at these, the black dot have a slightly smaller head than the red dot which are midsized, too bad maxfli and taylor made arent making these any more

These are simple elegant cavity backs with blade sized heads and little offset. The top lines a little thicker than a blade but that's the only negative aesthetically. Theres a delicate balance between forgiveness and workability that all clubs have to strike and the Maxflies come down on the side of workability. That's not to say they are hard to hit the cavity defiantly helps and toe hits will still get up and go but they don't offer anything like the forgives of oversized game improvement irons. Catch one cleanly and impact is very soft and rewarding hit one away from the sweet spot and you get a hard thud like most cavity backs. SI to 5 these Id be happy to play with but Id have to become a lot more consistent in my ball striking before id feel happy using the 3 or 4 from the fairway. these are really nice irons but you need to be off about 12 to get the most from them

Before my purchase of the Maxfli Revolution Irons I hit every club I thought I wanted in the price range of $600.00 - $900.00. The club that gave me the best satisfaction at the time was the Maxfli Revolution Black Dot S300. I purchased the irons about five years ago. Just recently I went was in the market again to replace my currant set of irons, in the same price range as before, and I still refuse to part my Maxfli Revolution irons. These are, indeed, the best clubs I ever hit. Although I would love to get a new set of clubs; there is no way I am going to replace my currant set unless someone can offer me something better. I highly recommend them to anyone. If you can find a good use set of Maxfli Revolution Black Dot S300, get em’.

I recently purchesed the maxfli revolutions and have never hit such a pure golf club. Just standing over the ball you know you are going to hit a good shot, and when you dont you can tell why. The ball flight with these clubs are exeptional, they go quite high compared to other golf clubs and this produces more spin which helps on the more difficult golf courses with the harder greens. I am 15 years old and have been playing for around 2 and a half years now and im of a 13 handicap, I believe these are the golf clubs that can take me to the next level. Trust me if you belive in your ability to stike the ball these clubs are for you, for the less experienced golfer the sweet spot is smallish but i seem to have no trouble finding it so that must mean you wont either. If your looking for new clubs try the maxfli Revolutions they wont let you down.
