Titleist DCI 990 Irons

Titleist DCI 990 Irons

DESCRIPTION

From Titleist: The 990 Iron features a "variable muscle back cavity with progressively biased weight throughout the set. Long irons are weighted to promote playability and higher ball flight. Short irons are weighted to produce lower, more controllable ball flight. Traditional V-grooves for consistent trajectory and spin performance."

Most solid irons I've ever hit. There may not be another iron that feels as good when you hit it flush. The thin topline also gives a great look at address and allows you to feel confident you will hit a good shot. Easy to shape as well.

Best irons I've ever tried. I have tried all of the players clubs out there including the entire MP line of Mizuno and the various latest blades/CB's of Titleist. None compare to the 990. Easiest club to work and the most accurate. Average players should stay clear. Good players should beckon and expert players should buy them. These are THE best club ever created.

I have played Ben Hogan Apex blade irons for most of my golfing life. As they are becoming more difficult to find (in conditions worth buying anyway), I have converted to Titleist. I recently bouught a set of mint 1982 Tour Models..love 'em.

I was looking for a set of mimimal cavity back irons, non-forged that will hold up longer than soft forged. I bought a good condition set of 990's on Ebay for 60.00 - less than a set of grips. So I had nothing to lose.

I am generally a consistent ball striker. I find that these irons don't provide any more help in regard to forgiveness than my blades.

If you are looking to make the step towards blades, buy these. They are inexpensive so risk is low, and they will force you to learn how to make a good pass at the ball. When you learn how, you will love these.

Disregard the reviews that claim these clubs to be forged. They are cast. Despite this fact, they are simply the best feeling irons I have ever laid my hands on and I've laid many. The profile at address is near perfection. When hit solidly, they are the longest irons I've ever hit yet the lofts are weak by today's standards. Lesser players should avoid these clubs and any other club that doesn't look like a garden hoe. Let me digress...these clubs are sublime and should be considered to be the bee's knees. They are like super fly TNT. I shoot low 70's and I'm the club champ. Have a good one.

I am left handed and bought a set of Titleist DCI 990 irons when I saw them in the hands of Phil Michelson. I am far from a Phil but wanted to experience the same clubs that a great pro uses. Prior to that I was using very forgiving Cavity back irons. Wow what a difference! It took quite some time to make the adjustments for the 990s. These are S300 stiff shaft irons with heads as close to forged "tour ( muscle back) heads as it gets. The "sweet spot" is bigger than a tour blade but not by much . When you miss it lets you know it. It feels like hitting a brick with a a piece of Re-bar . Actually hurts some times. When you connect its like waving the club head through a soft piece of butter and WOW does the ball take off ! Once you get the "hang" of these beauties you get to understand why tour blade clubs were always a pro favorite....with slight adjustments in stance and grip you can hit gorgeous draws and fades that a cavity back tries to "correct" and eliminate.
IMO.. these clubs are NOT for mid/high handicappers. They would only frustrate them . You need to have a reasonable and repeatable golf swing to get the most out of these clubs.
Sadly , I'm in my mid sixties and don't have anywhere near the flexibility and lack of physical pain that I used to have. The clubs have become unplayable for me. I got it down to an 8 at one point and played through my mid 50s at a 10. No more...Hey enough of my whining..If you are in reasonable physical condition and have a good golf swing ( with a high swing speed for the "stiff" True Temper S300U shafts) you would LOVE these magnificent clubs. Sometimes older is way better than "the latest" If you find a set of these beauties in good condition, grab em. You will not be sorry.

I picked these clubs up for 200 bucks from a guy that my local golf pro new. They were in mint condition and have True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 shafts. This is my first set of non game improvement clubs, my previous set was Titleist DCI Black Oversized + that I sold 12 years ago. Thses clubs are great and Im very pleased with them, supper solid when you them hit flush but they do let you know when you miss hit them. They are easy to hit and even with my 12 year lay off. My only complaint is that the stock grips are hard which might be due to age and I will be changing them soon. I would recomend these clubs to anyone willing to put in some time to improve their game, as I have been doing over the last 6 weeks.

Titleist DCI 990. Left handed. 3 - SW, Rifle 6.0 shafts. Ebay purchase, $80. Above average condition, new lamkin grips. I've played just 2 rounds with these. Hit 12 large buckets at the practice range. These clubs ROCK! I've been happily using Ping I-3's with JZ stiff shafts / cushin for 2 years. Bought the DCI 990's on a whim. My shot accuracy has improved with the Titleist set. Distance is 15% longer. Club feedback to my hands on pure shots is clearer, and punishment to my hands on mis-hits is more severe compared to the Pings. The Pings brought me game improvement over the previously owned Callaway X-22's. The Titleist are a proven improvement over the Pings. So is this as good as it gets with golf clubs? Do I need to find the next best 3-PW set? Can I get them on E-bay for less than $100?

Customer Service

Service from Titleist / Acushnet? The best.

Great set of Irons! After playing TA 845's for the past 12 years, I figured it was time to "step-up" to a better set of Irons. Since I'm not one to go drop $800-$1,000 on golf equipment, I went shopping online. I purchased my 990's (3-PW) for $100. What a steal! The irons are a perfect combination of a blade and cavity-back. The responsiveness of the clubs will inevitably help any golfer "feel" their mis-hits without compromising results - something that most OS, cavity-backed irons won't do (they tend to mask all off-center hits). They've added 10 yards to all of my (good) iron shots. As other reviewers have noted, these clubs make it extermely easy to work the ball. I can't believe I waited this long to switch to top-performing irons like the 990's. However, if you have never played blades before (I went through the traumatic experience of learning the game with blades in the early 80's), or are a high-handicapper, they may not be for you. You definitely won't be rewarded for off-center hits, but when you make solid contact on the sweet-spot the results are awesome. Highly recommended for anyone who shoots scores 90 and below.

Customer Service

There's a reason titleist is, "The #1 name in golf...." Having dealt with them in the past, they are extremely interested and concerned with their customer-base.

I have played every club in the book. I have yet to find any club that comes anywhere near the playability and classic look of the 990 iron. I have recently sent them in for polishing and new Lamkin grips as I feel replacing these babies would be a mistake. TITLEIST really have a winner even in an old product!!!

My handicap is 21, and was unsure whether these irons would work for me; however I bought them from ebay and gave them a go. Did they work or what! I have never been able to properly hit long irons before, even on my game-improver set! Now I am consistently hitting my 3iron around 200-220yds and can work the ball easily. The clubs are fitted with Rifle 6.0 shafts, and was told that these may be too stiff, however they are not what so ever. They feel smooth and soft, and you can really feel the effect of the mid-kick point. Absolutely great irons, a serious buy for anyone from a mid handicap below!
