Tom Wishon Golf 550c Cavity Back Irons

Tom Wishon Golf 550c Cavity Back Irons

DESCRIPTION

* 550C are a true forged carbon steel design, made from a softer alloy of Carbon Steel called 1035C with lower carbon content for allowing the forging process to pack the steel tighter and improve grain structure and reduce internal voids * 550C is a true Cavity Back design, which means it is forgiving on off-center hits and recommended for all levels of players * TWGT uses a 5-step forging process which is one more step than most all other forged irons; the additional step is done to compress the steel tighter in the head and to help reduce the amount of grinding that is required to prepare the irons for nickel/chrome electro-plating. This also ensures more consistency of shape in the set. * The progressive offset from 3.5mm in the #2 and 3 irons, down to 2.0mm in the short irons is more like what the pros on the PGA Tour have started to like, more than a total non-offset design.

I went shopping last winter for a set of forged clubs with some forgiveness. These clubs are superb on all counts. Appearance: Classic good looks with thin topline, smallish heads. Cavities and musclebacks are matched to one another. Fit and finish are outstanding--I get compliments at the range (for the clubs, not my swing). Accuracy: Excellent. Took some sessions at the range to lock them in, complicated by ongoing swing tweaks, but at this point they're point and shoot. Feel: Exactly what you'd expect in a well-made forged iron. Distance: These clubs are traditionally lofted; if you want to impress your friends by pulling a short iron on a 160 yard par 3, you'll have to bend these strong, muscle up or shop elsewhere. Even so, I've picked up a few yards over my old set. Workability: Oh my yes. Draw, fade, knock-down--if you can do it, they can do it. Forgiveness: better than you'd expect from a shallow cavity and muscle; soles are thin, so expect to pay the price on fat shots more than anything. Seldom punitive. An excellent choice for midcappers and better. But regardless of what you choose, HAVE THEM FITTED! The improvements in mechanics and increased confidence that go with clubs built to your swing are huge.

Customer Service

Fitted and built by Tom Spargo at Narragansett CC/Eagle Quest Dome in RI. Great workmanship, attentive service before and after the sale. Haven't dealt directly with Wishon Golf--they interface mostly with clubmakers. But a trip to his site (wishongolf.com) makes it clear he's a wonk's wonk with a devoted following of club makers.

I have a mixed set of 550s, 4-8 cb and 9-SW mb, with DGR300 shafts and Lamkin Classic permawrap grips. I absolutely love this combo. I am an 11 handicap and have been playing ping eye2+'s for the last 10 years. I really liked my pings and had no strong desire to switch after years of curiousity-driven demos of all the popular OEMS. While reshafting my 983 driver (w/ NV75- another great combo), I spotted some 550 demos at my local custom golf store. Tried them out and after 3 days had no doubt that I was buying a set. The Mizunos, Titleists, and others, although I've been tempted, never came close to having the same effect. And honestly, price was not a factor, but the price of the 550s was certainly a bonus considering you can get these at about 40% the price of the major brands. Within a week, I gave my beloved Pings to my father-in-law after shooting two 78s the first two times out with the 550's. Now, I am not going to disregard the psychological or the honeymoon factors of new irons. Certainly the excitement and novelty of the Wishons have contributed to a sense of confidence and renewed focus, but the look and the feel of the 550s play a significant part in that. They have less offset and a thinner profile than the pings, which has really given me the greenlight to be more aggressive with the short irons and greater willingness to work the ball with the mid- and long irons. The feel of both the cb's and mb's are incredible (really no noticeable difference between the two) and just make them so fun to hit. Again, I don't want to ignore other confounding factors, like the change in weight and flex of the shafts, but all I can report is the positive results of the combo. No real change in distance and/or trajectory (I really have been content with those parts of my game - I generally hit a high draw- 150 with my 8-iron). But, as others have said, the accuracy is incredibly good. I'm losing less left and my occasional nemesis of high rights are less frequent and less punishing. Finally, I have to say that the customer service, enthusiasm, and workmanship of Shane Springer from golfshed.com contributed significantly to my experience with these irons. Based on earlier reviews, I gave him a shot, but also considered others, locally and online. He gave me the best price from the get-go and had the irons at my doorstep within a week of initiating contact. I liked the clubs and him so much, I ordered an AW and Wishon 60 wedge from him a week later. They have seemlessly entered the bag and are there to stay. By the way, my father-in-law loves the Pings and has made a drastic improvement in his game. I wanted to add that because I think the Pings are great clubs and would have served me well for a long time. I just like the Wishons a whole lot better.

Customer Service

Shane Springer at golfshed.com is absolutely terrific. Great enthusiasm, responsiveness and workmanship.

Tom hand picked the heads for me at my request, the weights were spot on and all but one ( off 1 degree in loft )was perfect for loft and lie. Unheard of with component heads. Craftmanship is exquisite, Beautiful irons. They feel great too!!! Well worth the money. I will never buy a pro line set for retail price again.

I have been playing for 2years now. Started out with 2002 Big Bertha Irons, very forgiving, too forgiving actually and they were hideous to look at. Then I switched to Nike Pro Combo Irons, more feel than the Berthas, better looking at address. Nike with their Pro Combos was one of the first OEMS to recently sell a mixed set of Cavity and Muscle backs clubs. I immediately improved my game with the pro combos because of the feedback I could get on every shot. I could feel a toe shot or a thin shot, this feel and feedback helped me improve my game. A mis-hit with the Nikes though resulted in a drastic loss in yardage. I was fine with that though because I was still in the fairway, just well short of my target. I was looking for something that was a combination of forgiveness and feel. I wanted muscle back irons for the P-7 and Cavity for the 6-4. My new irons would need to have a thin profile that I had grown to like and the wonderful forged feeling not found in a cast club head. I did not rule out any iron, trying everyone I could get my hands on. Price was no object, I would spend whatever needed to find golf club perfection. I eventually narrowed it down to the Mizuno MP30's the Titleist 690s and the Wishon 550s. The first two I spent a lot of time on the range with, the Wishon's were nowhere to be found. I did some searching online and found these reviews here. Many people seemed to make mention of a club maker at thegolfshed.com. At first I thought, what good is a custom fitting when the fitter isn't even in the same state?? So I kept searching for a local alternative to thegolfshed. There were authorized Wishon builders in my area but I could fine nobody that had the knowledge, skills and service that Shane at the golfshed provides. I figure that anything he builds is going to be worlds better then the stuff you buy off the rack at some golf superstore or off ebay. I waited for the right time financially to make the purchase. I filled out the custom fitting form, sent in my measurements and left Shane to build my new clubs. He shipped them out express so I would get them before the weekend, I was so impatient! The clubs arrived packaged with care, I unwrapped them and just stared at these beautiful irons. I get the full color Wishon catalog sent to my house but no picture does these clubheads justice, you need to see them in person to appreciate the craftsmanship. I have since hit over 700 range balls and played 6 full rounds with these irons. and I have had them less that 3 weeks! They are every bit as good as people on here are saying. I remember people saying "oh man these irons are accurate" I thought to myself, How can an iron be accurate, either your swing is good and you are squaring the clubhead or not" Well I don't know what the heck it is about these things, maybe its the frequency matched shafts, maybe its the clubhead design, or the wonderful Golf Pride whisper grips but I was IMMEDIATELY more accurate with my iron shots! I guess the reviews were right. At first I noticed a 5yd increase in distance but as I have gotten used to them, the increase is now in the area of 10-15yds longer, and STRAIGHTER! They have such a quality feel to them that instills confidence in all my shots. I had my doubts about purchasing clubs online but the quality is outstanding, the price was more that fair and the service was world class. About the service, I have spoken with people at Wishon and they were very friendly and helpful. I also exchanged dozens of emails with Shane at thegolfshed.com. He showed incredible patience with me and all my questions, his replies were prompt and friendly. I can easily say the customer service I received from thegolfshed far exceeds any other golf retailer I have EVER dealt with. I can not recommend them enough. If you are considering these irons, get them, I took a gamble on them and it has paid off with lower scores and some beautiful shots!

Model Reviewed: Wishon 915 CFE Cold Rolled Titanium

I own the current Taylor Made 580 XD and the Callaway Big Betha II drivers. But I do not use them any more. I have been using the Wishon 915CFE 420cc cold rolled titanium face driver with maximum allowable COR. The face is large and the sound at impact is explosive. I have increased my distance by 20 yards over the TM and Callaway due to the face design and the lightweight shaft. More importantly, due to the face design, my drives are more accurate and stay in the fairway more often. My handicap has reduced from 12 to 7 since I started using Wishon 915CFE 6 months ago. With the Grafalloy Blue shaft, it costs less than 1/2 of the name brands!!!. Check out the driver at www.moonshotgolf.com. Try it.

I assembled the 550C's with Dynamic Gold Sensicore S300 shafts. Truly the best irons I've ever played. Look great at address, and they have a soft but authoritative feel. They are also very forgiving on off-center hits. The bounce angles make these irons very playable from tight, firm turf or from lush, grassy turf. I've had no problem getting balls out of moderate to deep rough. In recent years, I had altered my set make-up by removing the 2, 3, and 4 irons in favor of easier to hit utility clubs, but the 550C's are so easy to hit, I've put the 4 iron back and I'm considering reintroducing the 3 iron. These are definitely clubs that any level golfer can play and enjoy. Even though they are expensive as component clubs go, they are still very affordable and of the highest quality.

I got a set of 550 4-6 cavity/7-PW blade with Rifle 5.5 shafts. They are beautiful to look at with a thin topline and traditional shape. From address, there is a seamless transition in that you can't tell the blade from the cavity back. I only had some range time with them before going to Myrtle. After 7 rounds, these irons are the most accurate I've hit. Just aim at the pin and fire! Holed out a 125-yd approach shot for an eagle! Forgiving on off-center hits with some loss in distance but stayed on target. Hit these pure and it's the sweet forged feeling. Would recommend these for any mid-capper.

I'm 62 yrs old and have been playing golf with big name clubs since age 35. Currently a 16 handicap and, not happy with my Callaway Big Bertha irons, I began my search for the best component forged cavity clubs and clubmaker I could find. I soon learned about Tom Wishon Golf Technology, the leading name in component club products, and his newly designed 550 (c)cavity and (m)muscleback forged irons. In addition, I was directed to TheGolfShed.com and it's owner/master clubmaker, Shane Springer, for purchase and assembly. I recently received my new set of 550 c's (4-PW+GW) and was very impressed with the look, feel and craftsmanship of these clubs. I'd put them up against any big name set of irons, looks, quality, feel and playability wise and I know new prospective buyers would agree with me. Shane built these clubs with the new Wishon Series 5 steel shafts. He advised that every shaft in the set had no more than 5 cpm's (cycles per minute)- a perfect frequency matched set which you couldn't buy off the Pro Shop shelf from a big name company. Yesterday, 8-5-03, I was able to get some range time to hit these new irons. They are soft feeling for a forged club and very forgiving. The 550's would be excellent clubs for players of any handicap level. I was hitting my Big Bertha 5 iron a consistent 170 yds. I hit the 550c 5 iron a consistent 180-185 yds straight and true! Then an assistant Pro hit the 5, 7, 9 and all he could say was, "These Are Pure!" "Where did you get these?! Of course I told him, with the added remark that I would never buy the so called big name again. He Understood!! I look forward to playing my new model Wishon Nightfire Driver when it arrives.

Customer Service

Dealing with Shane Springer and TheGolfShed.com has been a dream buying experience. I believe that he has fitted, built and provided me with the finest set of custom forged irons money can buy. They come with a 1 yr warranty service. Just fill out the fitting form completely, as requested and, you too will be highly impressed with any clubs Shane builds for you.

Played a lot of golf as a junior and am just starting to play regularly again. The Wishon clubs, both the muscle and cavity back, set up nicely, are smooth swinging, and feel wonderful. I have always preferred the feel and setup of blades but never cared for the erratic results I generated with them. This set of irons is the best of both worlds - look and feel great and produce great results (that feel like a million when you hit it well and work even on mis hits). I think these irons would work well for anybody that has decent ball striking skills - I never intended to get anything but the cavity back until demoing the mb and realizing that it is no more difficult to hit. The fact that you can order these to your specs and get "custom" treatment is an added bonus. I strenthened the loft on my 4 nad 5 iron so I can drop the 3 and carry an extra wedge - 1st time out with it I holed a 110 yard wedge shot.

Customer Service

I had my clubs built by the Golf Shed. They are very focused on making sure you are a satisfied new owner. Attentive to detail, treat your order as if it were their own clubs, etc...
