Model Reviewed: WIlson Deep Red fat shaft irons (steel)

Recently got fitted out for a full set of these irons (3-LW) in steel. This is the first set of custom fitted irons I have owned and I am now a convert. Prior to this I owned and played many off the shelf sets and would consistently strike the ball towards the toe of the club. That problem is now solved (3/4" longer & 2 deg. upright)and I will not buy off the shelf again. As for these clubs, I am very pleased with them. They are quite forgiving and well weighted. The long irons play longer than I am used to and the short irons play shorter. I assume that's due to differences in lofts over my previous set but once I played a few rounds with the Wilsons, I now know what to expect. I am not overjoyed with the Deep Red wedges (GW, SW, LW). I tend to hit them thin occasionally with disasterous results. I will stick with them for a bit longer and see if I can work them out but at this stage I'm happier with the Cleveland wedges. Anyway, overall I reckon these are excellent clubs (3-PW) and custom fitting is highly recommended.

Recently when going to the driving range i decided to look at these irons which were superb. I have trouble getting the ball in the air normally but since purchasing the irons i have no trouble at all. Simply a great club that makes you want to use irons not woods.

Do not buy these clubs if you are not a slicer. I tend to hit a natural draw and these clubs turned it into a large hook. They are game improvement clubs and the offset tends to work against golfers that do not have a problem squaring the clubface. They are also rather heavy and bulky looking at address. Not much backspin with the short irons. These definitely don't stick like my TA5's do. On the positive side, they have strong lofts and I hit about a club length further than my TA5's. Very forgiving. You can feel a mis-hit and not lose too much distance. Great club for those with a tendency to slice the ball or have trouble getting it in the air.

Clubs are smooth - but not much feel. I feel like I have better control with my 12 year old Mizunos. But the Mizunos don't hit nearly as consistently as the Wilsons. Definitely much smoother and the hits go farther. Large heads give you lots of extra confidence in swing. Would probably use a different pitching wedge, since I really want feel with a higher loft club.

I shot low 80's for years with my old Tommy Armour 845's. I bought my Deep reds after reading reviews and seeing how nice they look. They are the coolest looking club around. Cool looking does nothing for scoring though. I gave my set over a year (In NC that is a lot of golf) and have not been consistent yet. Great hits clunck hard. Some shots have no feel and are too smooth. Some are wickedly harsh. Admittedly, bad feeling shots fly well. My distance fluctuates within 15 yards making greens tough to hit consistantly. I never chuncked to bad until these clubs. The stiff shaft and heavy feeling head feel like I am striking the ball with a lead pipe. A friends Titleist 822OS are flawless and I hit them very well, reminding me that I can be consistant. I love the way they look and I wish I could do better. I'm sure it is a simple matter of my swing not jiving with the weight transfer of the club. I just bout Cleveland TA5's and so far I am back on track and loving golf. My advice is try them out at a range and hit a bucket at a few known distances. If you are good with them, they sure do show well in the bag. Hope this helps.

The wilson deep reds have to be the best club i have ever played with. I would try and play everyday and have come down from 18 to 12 in 3 months. The wilson deep reds are very forgiving on off centre hits and i have found they seem to go further than any other set of clubs that i tried.

Customer Service

My local pro was very helpful and let me try many clubs. The shaft is also very important to test in the stiffness to get. I got regular as i am only 15 and not that strong.

I have found that the mizuno mp30's were also very forgivind and a nice club to hit. If you are not worrying about prive the callaway x-14 and x-16 are a lovely club to hit.

These clubs are amazing! The feel and distance are awesome. You hit the ball right where you want and far. I hit the TaylorMade RAC, Callaway BB, Cleveland TA/5, and the Titelist 822OS. These were the best out of the bunch by far. The best kept secret in golf. Of all the advice I sought out NO ONE suggested the Wilson's. I tried them om a whim and WOW am I glad I did. If you shoot between 80-100 you will LOVE these clubs!!! 10 out of 10

Best of the best. I have tried pings, taylor made RAC OS and LT, Titleist, Callaway X-16, 2002 Big Bertha, you name it. Nothing comes even close to the feel and accuracy of these clubs in regular flex steel shafts. Distances 8 iron 155, 7 iron 165, 6 iron 175 etc..

Model Reviewed: Wilson Fat Shaft Irons - Graphite Shafts

LONG, STRONG, & STRAIGHT!! I'm not kidding. I've been playing since I was a kid (just turned 49), and I consistently shoot in the mid-80s, lower 80s when I'm playing alot, and on those rare occasions every few years I break 80. No longer. With the graphite Deep Red Fat Shafts I'm consistently a solid 15-20 yards longer than at any other time in my life, no matter what club (Calloway VFT, Ping I3, etc.) What folks have said about the PW being 125 yards is right on. 135-140 for the 9, 150 for the 8, etc. Now, instead of the rare occasion when I break 80 I expect to and so far haven't been disappointed! Played a quick nine yesterday and shot 38. The most pleasant surprise has been the ease of hitting the long irons. Also, if you hit off-center it doesn't feel too good, but I haven't noticed much, if any, loss of distance. Weird, but great!! I hear lots of commetns about workability. But for my game, and my money, who need workability when you can hit it long and straight every time! It would be hard to make a mistake with these clubs, I'd recommend them to anyone.

I just switched from a stiff flex to a regular flex, and it's much better for me. As indicated, I shoot in the 90s and sometimes in the 100s. Consistency has yet to be obtained by me, so my fat shots really hurt sometimes. But I am improving everyday, and I think these irons are helping. I have placed masking tape on the head of these irons to view ball contact, and even on mis-hits, the ball launches far and away, although it doesn't feel and sound good. It's pretty remarkable that an otherwise ugly shot will still go straight. The biggest problem I think is that when you really hit it in the sweet spot, the ball REALLY launches, and it messes with your club selection. Non-perfect 9 iron shots, for example, will get me 115 yds. But if hit sweetly, it'll generate 135 yds. I am not as a position to comment on how to "work" the ball with these irons. I played with the Hypercarbons, and the Deep Reds, and the rubber inserts have done nothing, in my opinion. But the increase in club face, especially the long irons, if nothing else, helps me psychologically because it looks that much bigger. Everything helps!
