Model Reviewed: G2 Anser C

Having owned a Ping putter before (L'il B belly) and disliked it, I was somewhat sceptical about trying anymore of them. As I am planning to assemble a bank of 4 or 5 to practice with over the winter, I gave this one a try because it has a look that I like...I was pleasantly surprised. The Anser C is a very clean, classic looking putter. Wanting to switch from a mallet design to this style, I focused on two main choices - the G2 Anser C and the Yes Tracy II. Both share a very simple hosel design, having a slightly bent shank with little offset, as opposed to the cluttered looking "spare-plumbing-parts" offset hosels on other models. While the Yes seems to get a nice roll on the ball a little quicker, the feel is a bit muted compared to the Ping (could be a result of the C-grooves, but the soft Winn wrap grip probably doesn't help). The Ping set up perfectly for me, although the shaft was a little longer than stated. It is easy to get on line, and a sweet balance makes for a very pure stroke. I would recommend this putter to anyone looking for this style head without the busy looking goose-neck hosels. It is a little light compared to mallet putters, so it requires a smoothe stroke, but it puts a great roll on the ball, and is very easy to aim with, particulary if you tend to pull putts a bit, as is my problem with my Rossie mallet. The feel is crisp and smoothe (might not be a great analogy, but it is a happy meeting of the two). It is also going for a great price since the insert models have hit the shelves.
