I'm not one to break himself on buying expensive balls. I'm finally getting to the point to where I can play a round with one sleeve, so I decided to got with the Nike One Black. Where do I start. I played a 3 par course to test out the ball and its reaction on the greens. I also compared it to the Calloway 56 tour and the ProV. I also compared it to the Nike Soft. As far as distance it outperformed the other balls with no problem Even on hits that where not that flush it seemed to still stay true and get good distance. On the green spin aspect, the ball does see to bite. You can see the ball take a bounce and then just stick. Not sure if I was backing it up any but it was not rolling off the green. Everybody wants back spin because the pros have it, but most don't need it. The everyday golfer usually is short of the pin anyway. With that said the stopping power on the green is maybe not as good as the ProV but not that far behind. It does seem to traver further than the ProV. All in all get this ball. You won't be sorry.

Decided to try the Nike One Black after reading some good reviews and the Consumer Reports article...

After my first 18 holes with this ball I am very satisfied with it. Driver distance is good. Irons stop on the green (didn't spin any back more than a couple inches, but one hop and stop is good for me). Most importantly, I was able to play this ball for 18 holes and its still good to go. Just one small scuff mark but it didn't seem to affect performance. The feel of this ball is kind of hard, but it doesn't bother me. Putts very nicely. I am a huge fan of the Maxfli Blackmax, but it just scuffs to easily for me...

Keep in mind, if you aren't breaking 90 consistantly, the ball you use really doesn't matter (performance-wise). Maybe you perfer a softer ball, but if you're shooting 105, buy some Nike Super Soft ($15/dzn), and use the extra money for lessons!

I, too, bought some One Blacks after reading Conusmer Digest rankings. Had been playing V1x's and Precept U-Tri Tours. The Black is truly a great ball. Long of the tee to be sure. With irons from fairway nothing overly special about them. Around greens they really do seem to grab/spin amazingly well. I found the 2005 version on CLEARANCE rack at Sports Authority for $29.99 and bought 2 dozen more. Highly Reccomended.

Great ball. I purchased several from ebay for cheap. I don't think any ball is worth $40. I love the feel, especially with the driver. It's my ball of choice.

Oh ya, this ball kicks some serious you know what! Ok, I'm one of the bigger hitters on the course. I look for good distance, but soft feel and most of all, straightness. This ball has it all. Make sure you're playing Augusta National with over 7200 yards to play with, or you will be hitting this in the woods! I about cried when I lost my only two pack in the woods. This sucker flies great, true and straight. 300 yards is very possible with this puppy, even for the under 100mph swinger! You could save some dough and get the new ignite, but this is even a little better, not by much, but maybe worth the extra $14/dz. Just an awesome ball. Soft feel, durable, long and straight, man, Nike is really doing wonders in golf lately. I like this more than the '05 Platinum, but haven't tried the '06 yet.

I tried this ball because I saw the ratings in Consumer Reports and wanted to compare it to the Nike ONE Platinum. This ball is really long. I saw parts of the course that I have never seen before. My well hit drives are normally between 250-260 and I hit a few 280 yard drives. It is a little firmer and spins less than the Platinum but still has plenty of spin and feel. I highly recommend this ball.

I found the original Nike One Black to be an excellent wind ball, mid trajectory, straight and long off the tee and easy to work. The only complaint was that the ball really did not spin well off irons and wedges. You had to factor in run after the ball hit the green, period. Mind you it was a fair trade off for the driver and distance performance, particularly in the 20+ MPH winds that we can get in Texas. Now for the 2006 update, a significant improvement. The ball performs very much like the original however it does spin slightly more of the driver and has a slightly higher trjectory. The real noticable difference is that the ball now has controllable spin around the greens. Where the older model would release upon impact the new model can skip and stop, drop and stop and spin back a controllable distance. I would say it spins slightly less then the Nike One Gold. I think a good analogue would be a Pro v-1x with a little more driver and full iron distance (the ball is visibly hotter off the driver, its kind of neat the ball is about 55 further out than you expect it to be when you pick-up the ball flight.) Relative to a Pro v-1x the ball has a little more spin around the greens and a trajectory off the driver that is about 7-10% lower. A strong performer

Customer Service

Prior to availibilty I called with performance questions such as relative spin rates new vs old. Nike is not Titleist, call Titleist and you talk with a golfer that can answer such questions throughly and give personal impressions. Call Nike and you get a marketing hack that doesn't even play golf but can read the box well.

Its just as described on the box: 'low-spin, mid-trajectory'. To be honest its more like 'low-trajectory'. Having said that, its all in all a good ball. Its more durable than most high end balls, and has a fairly soft feel to it. Great off the tee! Definitely the most fun to hit with your driver. I was also able to create some nice slow fades onto those tricky angled greens with ease. Solid in the wind. If you can't impart spin on your wedge shots, leave these at the store! They won't do it for you. Way too pricey though....I got 3 dozen NIB on ebay for $36 shipped!!! otherwise I doubt if I would've tried em at all.

It's not me, it's the equipment -- as most of us gripe. Well let me give credit where it is due. The Nike One Black is probably the most stable ball out there. I played on a day when the winds were about 20-30 mph. Yet, I was consistently able to fire away at the pins with very little deviation. These balls penetrate right through. I was still able to hold the greens fairly well en route to a 77. Usually, a ball this firm usually gravitates towards the fringe or rough upon bouncing on the green. However, I was able to check the ball up with wedge shots -- even from the collar. In that sense, it behaved like its brother, the Nike One Platinum. Do not play this ball if you don't know what the hell you're doing around the greens. In other words, learn how to put a little action on the ball before converting. The Nike One Black will help you with your distance and trajectory. But it can downright hurt you on your short game, again, because of its firmness. The feel on putts was also great. I use a Scotty Cameron Newport blade putter. So using this ball with (practically) a forged putter gave me instant feedback. Give this ball a try if you: want to lower your ball flight, need to straighten out your drives, want less spin with your wedges, and, most importantly, have the $40+ to barter with your local golf retailer.

Amazing ball. When nike says this is the longest ball on tour, there not kidding. My driving distance has gone up 10 yards from previous ball(HXHOT). This ball is also laser accurate due to the fact that the ball does not spin that much. So may this be a warning to players who don't put a lot of spin on the ball. However if you are a high launch, high spin player, this ball will help you keep the ball out of the sky. It is still possible to spin the ball you just have to come down steep on you pitch shot's. Ball is pretty durable, not the best, but not the worst. The cover may scuff on a wedge shot, but performance is not affected at all.
