Overrated course for the price you pay. Only 3 holes run along the Ocean. Fair ways and Greens were in great shape. Course is great for a public course but only a few holes are memorable. Not a course I would go out of my way to play again.

Customer Service

A lot of past history on the walls in the Proshop.

Played the South Course in July, 2007, the day before the World Junior Championships. The course was not in very good shape compared to the green's fee. The fairway and greens would rate an average, while the rough was pretty uneven in coverage. They have a lot of work to do before the 2008 Open! Nevertheless, the course was challenging and a lot of fun. It was worth playing once, but I wouldn't play it again.

Played Torrey Pines South Course on 15 November. I was very excited about playing this course, I mean jeez its the site of the 2008 U.S. Open, so its got to be awesome. Went to the driving range the night before after my flight got in to get some practice in. Practice area was small but good enough. The driving range was one of the worst I have ever seen (shocking to say the least). No grass hitting areas all mats and they were well over due for replacement. The practice putting green is actually located in the front of the Pro shop and it was big and fast! Pro Shop was old but was loaded with anything golf related clothing wise that they can put thier logo on to include U.S. Open items (very exspensive). They also have the U.S. Open Trophy on display (cool seeing Tiger and the other greats name on it). Also have big poster size pictures of Tiger as a kid playing the course on the walls. Me and my buddy arrived at 5 AM to get in line to play the South Course we ended up being the first to go out as most of the locals want to play the North Course (although a PGA played course, its easier and visually stunning). South Course was long but overall shape was lacking except for the greens. I played with another service member who has played here before and he said they are letting the course grow out a bit to prep it for the Buick Invitational that goes in Febuary. Can't say much about the rough as I was splitting the fairways all day. But the rough was not to bad but it looked deeper the further you got away from the fairways. Shots into the greens must be on the money as they are well protected by bunkers and deep rough. Greens were fast and rolled true. Collars around greens were cut poorly, but that was probably due to the guy that was mowing that day and not a trend. Green fee's for San Diego military (got to have a resident card to get the dicount) were great at $41.00 to play a U.S. Open Course. But I would not pay the $130.00 non resident fee to play this course because it just was not the type of shape you would expect a course to be in at that price, sorry but course conditions, should reflect the green fee's. North Course is a bit cheaper. Overall, it was a good day of golf, and I can say I played it! Would play again and will.

Awesome staff there. California life style is reflected in the staff, laid back dude! I left CA 22 years ago when I joined the Marines and the staff just reminded me how much I missed it out there!

Played the North course and used the booking agency which was probably a mistake. A single shouldn't have a big problem getting on. One thing I will say, it has about 4 or 5 beautiful holes. Hole #6 is one of the most spectacular views and you have to tee off from the tips on 7 (stay on the left....its dead right). Once you get past those holes the luster of this mildly overrated course starts to wear on you. It is a public course and you get what comes with a public course. Long waits on each shot, tee shirts and lack of course control. Overall a very enoyable experience. Though mildly disappointed it was well worth it when you get to see the la jolla shores below you on #6 and #7.

Model Reviewed: Torrey Pines (South)

Well, it was mr dream to play Torrey Pines during my recent trip to San Diego and my dream came true. Coming from Canada, I found the rough to be a lot tougher than that found north of the border. Its thick and easily shuts the clubface. The price was fairly steep, but it is the US Open site in 2008, so I got to play the course where Tiger will probably win it again. I also payed for rental clubs and they were top-notch. All Titleist - including a Scotty Cameron Newport putter (much to my surprise). I got on within 10 minutes of paying for my round. I came as a single and got on with 2 other singles (no tee times). Pro-shop is amazing. Views are amazing. Course is amazingly difficult. The course shows its wear, and it wasn't in very good condition when I played it, but at least the greens were wonderful. If you're in the San Diego area, don't miss out on this one.

Customer Service

Awesome. Starter was great.

Played the North course through advanced tee time package which included a golf pro walking with us for 3 holes and explaining the course and how to play it. That made for a great experience. The North course is not difficult. From the tips (Blue tees; slope 130), the North course played approximately 6400 yards as many tee boxes were moved up. Some of the sights on the ocean holes were unbelievable. The par 3 6th hole which plays down hill approximately 180 yards is the signature hole. Between the handgliders, parachutters and navy jets flying over head, the views are unique. Generally there are large fairways to shoot at which makes course easier as rough was difficult to advance ball (or to find it in certain cases). Major negative was that play on course is too slow. My round was 5.5 hours. Even so, I would go back again to play the North course, if I could not get on the South course.

I recently played Torrey Pines South while on vacation in the San Diego area. It is without doubt, one of the most difficult courses I've played. This is not necessarily due to its length or design, but simply because of the way it is set up. The rough is no joke and if your tee shot lands in it, be prepared for a lengthy search and the likely possibility of not finding your ball. This is the case whether you miss the fairway by 10 yards, or a few feet. Other than that, the course layout and the scenery were nice but not necessarily exceptional. For residents, this course serves as a top notch muni which is what it is. For visitors however, the conditions of a muni are not what you expect of a "golf destination" especially when you're paying nearly 2 bills for the privilege a tee time. After completing my round at TP South I asked my playing partners if they felt like they got their money's worth and the overriding sentiment was "NO". Just to put it into perspective, I paid less to play at Spanish Bay and if you haven't played there, it is spectacular in every sense of the word, from its challenging layout, views, and impeccable conditioning. For a lot less money, if you want to play by the ocean, try Sandpiper in Santa Barbara - I think it has more ocean holes than TP South and in my opinion is a more scenic course. If you want challenge, go play at the Black Horse/Bayonet courses in Monterey - again, easy on the wallet and are both exceptional tests of golf that will expose any weaknesses in your game. For the same amount of money as TP South, my favorite near the ocean course is Kapalua Plantation - the views here are breathtaking and they're not just from a few holes either. Again, unless you're a S.D. resident, I just can't recommend TP South. In my opinion, it's just not worth it.

Customer Service

After forking over nearly 2 bills to play at this muni, I still had to pay for a bucket of balls to hit at their plastic mat driving range. Unbelievable.

Played the South 3 times since it was redone. Played the blues twice, white once. It's now very very long. The new greens putt true. You must keep it in the fairway if the rough is up. Very difficult to advance the ball out of the rough. Better to be in the fairway with a 3 wood with a 220-230 yd approach than 280 out in the toolies. The redo of numbers 3,4 and 14 are truly remarkable. 14's mid-iron approach screams bail out short. If you have seen a vanishing edge pool overlooking a canyon that's what the approach is like. Long, left,& right is death. Love that hole. The secret to scoring here for the 8 to 14 handicap is don't try to pound it out there. Keep it in the fairway, play to your normal length and chip and putt. You should be in the 80's with any luck even from the blues.

Customer Service

Good. Be nice to the starters, they get lots of dumb questions all day long.

I'm a local San Diegan and getting a tee time for Torrey Pines South (where the Buick is played on) is not too difficult, as long as you have a resident card and know the number to call for a reservation 7 days in advanced. With that in mind, I love this course as it really shows you just how good the PGA tour players are. I usually play the white tees (6800+ yds) and it's more than long enough for me. When the wind is blowing it can make most of the Par 4's into a Par 5. The greens are pretty hard, but they do roll pretty well. What's most surprising is how they really do break towards the ocean even on an uphill putt. As others have said, the rough here can add strokes to your round real quick, so staying on the fairway is a huge advantage. Since it plays so long at times, it's difficult to keep the ball in the fairway since you are trying to hit as long a drive as you can. My advice, concentrate on hitting the fairways at all costs. I've also played the North Course, which has the signature 6th hole and it is beatiful. The North plays much easier than the South, which could explain why it seems more fun to play as other reviewers have mentioned. Then again, playing the South really does put things into perspective and is fun to play the same holes that the pros play. In summary, I think that Torrey Pines is a must play for local San Diegans and for visitors alike. It may be difficult to get onto, but I think it's worth it. I played over the Labor day weekend with a tee time and without. I had to wait about an hour to get onto the North course (shot a 93 with 30 putts) on Sunday and had a tee time at 10:40AM for the South on Labor Day Monday and shot a 108 with 39 putts (ouch). What a humbling difference! If you have the means, play the South Course at least once.

The Cart girls here are the cutest around! Also, ask for a GPS cart if you like to ride. It helps to quickly get the yardage and not have to hunt for a sprinkler head, which aren't really too difficul
