I would strongly urge steady and frequent golfers to avoid this course. It has about 6 gimmicky holes which means holes that are tricks, with greens that have no landing areas, pins that are 15-20 ft in height so that they can be seen by golfers who are often just 100 yards or less from the green, sand and more sand and more sand everywhere, no out of bounds, and treacherous steps to climb up and down to elevated greens. My nationally ranked son played with us from the ripper tees [tips] and shot a 71 [par] and even said that he did not play here ever again. Because the stupid layout, the challenge to the golfer and the incredible shot making required to score well, golfers are losing balls all over the place and looking for the balls. Thus the round for us took almost 6 hours. There are no rangers who are policing the pace of play. Avoid this course at all costs unless you have excess cash laying around that you want to give away and you want to torture yourself.

Unbelievable! The only way to describe this course. Left living in Pinehurst before this course opened, and just played it 10 years later. No other golf course matches this one. We enjoyed playing so much we returned a month later to play it again, and can't get enough. The only downside is that once you play it, you'll never have as much fun playing any other course. Put this one on top of your list!

Customer Service

Friendly and helpful. The rangers were always seemed to be there when you were scrathing your head looking at the yardage card from the tee to give advice.

This is a visually gorgeous course, with plenty of high mounds, lush fairways and greens, sweeping waste areas, and beautiful scenery. Not particularly hard from the middle tees (as long as you hit it straight) but brutal from the tips. My only complaint is that the greens are both preposterously large and severely undulating, rendering the majority of each green unusable for pin placement purposes. Still, a very enjoyable course. Truly memorable. Would definitely return.

Customer Service

Excellent. Southern hospitality is not a myth. Friendly people and classy service. Felt very welcomed here.

Played on 3-9-07 Wow!!! This is one of the pretiest course I have ever played. Visually challenging but really playable. Some blind shots to super wide fairways and large greens. I am a 4 handicap and shot 74 the first time around this track, all pars and one double on number 9. (do not miss this green to the right or you are toast). I have read that some people say that it is like playing a putt-putt course (tricked up). Not even close to tricked up except for maybe the one par 5 on the back were you can not see any of the green complex because of the mounding. But it is a playable hole. The reviews for this course goes to show how different we all view things in life. But there is one common factor in all the reviews. That is how visually stimulating this course is. None like it anywhere (bring a camera). Most of the people who do not like the course in these reviews have high handicaps. I can see how a high handicapper can call the course tricked up. My budies all shoot in the 100's and they enjoyed the course as much as I did. If you want a truley tricked up course play Pinehurst#2. What a SUPER OVER RATED course. numbers 4,7,8 are by far better than #2 any day. If a designer today was to design greens like on #2 they would be out of the design business for sure.

What can you say about this masterpiece. From the drive to the club house to the entire experence. I have played TBR three times and it is breath taking everytime. From the first tee to the last. IF you have not played this course you are missing out. If traveling through Sanford area stop and enjoy.

Great golf course is understatement. Little do people know is this is as close as we get to links golf in US. Nice clubhouse with good staff. Every hole is awfully good. If one complaint, it is that par 3's are pretty similar. Tough course to even consider when cart path only. Must play it is every bit of spectacular.

Customer Service

Great staff from check in, to starter, to counter help.

Amazing course. Traveled 2 1/2 hours twice in the past two weeks to play this course. A must play for Mike Strantz fans. Huge greens, large fairways, and lots of blind tee shots and approach shots. Only 6600 from the back tees but a slope rating of 150! I shot 67 from the back tees my second time around. Once you know where to hit the ball it's easier. Every hole is a signature hole. Go when you can take the carts on the fairway otherwise you'll walk a ton.

Customer Service

Everyone was super nice.

Played April 2004. This is one of the best courses that I have played and the course has a special beauty, style and texture that make for a great golf experience. I have played two other Maverick Trail courses in Virginia, Royal New Kent and Stonehouse, and Tobacco Road does them one better. Having played the other two courses, I was well prepared for the forced carries, blind shots to fairways or greens, hidden bunkers and fast greens that are usual to Mike Strantz courses. Tobacco Road takes those characteristics and adds more generous waste areas to the mix as you meander through the grounds of an old quarry site. The course is more than fairways and greens. Tobacco Road is high mounds of gnarly grass, seas of sand and stone, and rolling fairways and sloped greens sometimes just large enough to catch the well-driven golf ball. The first hole of Tobacco Road could be more than enough for timid golfers to endure. The golfer must hit two accurate shots through or over mounds just to be able to make a par five on the hole. The second and third holes are relaxing par four and three, respectively, as long as the tee shots find the fairway and the green without an intervening misdirection to a waste area. The fourth hole is a par five that is reachable for an eagle putt as it bends the left. The score here will provide the player with a model how to play the eleventh hole, which is another par five, but this one bends to the right. Also, this par five has an elevated tee area, low landing area and elevated green. The thirteenth hole is a delicate par five that requires accurate placement of the approach shot to the green as the green is surrounded like a castle by the grassy mounds which would resemble a fortress if hit into them. While there is a definite beauty to number 14, a par three that has watered bordering on the right, the par three 17 is a stellar hole that doesn't measure over 150 yards, has an elevated tee box and a crooked finger green that stretches beside a vast waste area.

Customer Service

The staff was very helpful and supportive in getting me out to play. They were also interested in my play once I was finished and seemed genuine with their concern over my experience. Marshalls traveled the course to keep an eye on players regularly.

I played this course in the Fall 2002. I would agree that the course is "tricked up" or "cutsey". I played 27 holes on that day and after you play the course once, you become more comfortable with the blind shots. I agree the 150 rating is ridiculous as I normally play Bethpage Black from the 138 Slope tees and it is much more chalenging.
