I am 57 years old and took up Natural Golf to help cope with arthritis in my hands. That was a very good decision, BUT, what they don't tell you is that the Natural Golf method tends to cause some golfers (like me) to de-loft their clubs and hit low flying shots, especially off the tee. So, I bought a 12* Callaway R-flex C4 and yes, it does make a funny "thwock" sound and feels like a feather in your hands. HOWEVER, I shot a best-ever 88 on my first round with the club, having only hit a bag of balls at the practice tee beforehand. It IS forgiving, in that I "powder" my driver to see where the ball strikes the clubface and got only slightly right drives from two hits off the toe of the club. This club, especially with the "Release" grips from Feel Golf Inc., seems to me to be a perfect choice for middle-aged Natural Golfers who like to play from the fairway. It also gets the ball out there, even without the titanium "dink" of the metal clubs. I am very pleased to have found it at $110 on eBay.

Let's get some numbers out of the way. 24 year old male 1 handicap 112-117 mph swing speed I remember first hitting this driver before it was even introduced to the public and hating it...my swing was an awful sight back in early 02 and I was about a 13 handicap. I was using a callaway VFT driver at the time and having trouble keeping it straight as i was with pretty much everything. I hated the driver...but then i didn't know what i was doing. Fast-forward...distance is NOT a problem for me. I average about 290-300 off the tee without breaking a sweat. What i need is FAIRWAYS! I remember my turning pro friends saying how straight this club was...even tho it may have lacked all the muscle. A month ago i am sick of playing out of the rough...I order it NEW from PROGOLF for $100...get it and can't miss a fairway. Maybe I have lost 5 yards from my NIke TI driver...but gained so much confidence for accuracy. I won't part with this club for a long time. I can see the negatives...but how can sound be a determinate of buying a golf club? I say look at the stats...and for me...there is no question.

Customer Service

Callaway is a great company for Customer Service. I haven't needed to use them...but if i do get a break in the shaft as so many have...I'm sure they will cooperate wonderfully. I'll probably switch to a UST 65 shaft if I do break it.

I was a better golfer at age 14 than at age 33. I remember why... I didn't know how to swing bad. It was natural. After taking a few years off from the game (NAVY), I started to play again. I am totally addicted. Well, to get to the point, the Callaway C4 has not only improved my game, it's helped me find that swing I had at age 14. You can't "smash" this club. It will punish you for trying to kill the ball. Take it easy and tee it up high. Your swing needs to be around 80%... and POW!!! That ball will travel 280 to 300 with ease!!! The most fantastic part is, it's straight as an arrow, no huge slice!!! If you hit it easy, and accidently hit it off the toe, it's still good! I highly recomend this club!!! Get them while they're still around!! Also, about the shaft breaking and face chipping you may have read, this is a quote from Callaway themselves: "Thank you for your recent E-mail. We appreciate your taking the time to contact us with your inquiry, and we hope that your Big Bertha C4 driver is performing well for you. In response to your inquiry, if the shaft breaks on your C4 driver, it can be reshafted. Due to the special process required to reshaft this club, however, we recommend that it be sent to Callaway for the repair. Additionally, although damage to the face of the club cannot be repaired, if the damage occurs within the 2 year warranty period, an exchange can be made. If no C4 drivers are available, a suitable replacement driver will be provided. if you experience any problems with your C4 driver, please call our Consumer Relations Department at (800) 588-9836. Our business hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00am to 5:00pm Pacific Standard Time. The Representative you speak with will be happy to assist you in any way possible. Thank you. I purchased this club on ebay for $87.00 new. The good: very, very easy to hit. It's a bit lighter than most other drivers. If you slow down your swing and keep your shoulders level through, you are rewarded with shots that are high, straight and true. You do not have to take a home run cut to carry it 240-250 (that's before the roll mind you). In terms of sound, the club makes a distinctive smacking sound that lets you know that you made the right contact on a good swing - this should not be a deciding factor for the double digit handicapper. If you are going on tour, can hit a fade or draw on command, can nut a two-iron from 240 yards out - then by all means - buy something the pros are hitting. If you are like the rest of us, and play on the weekends and occasionaly during the week - the club is an exceptional value given that it was $400-$500 when introduced. Beats any other club in the $75 - $150 range, and you are getting a BRAND NEW club. The bad: the grip is too thin if you have large hands. Went to a Winn 6 and am very comfortable. The shaft length is fine for me (I'm 6'1") at 45.5 inches, however the shorter player may find this to be uncomfortable and may want to cut it down to 43 or 42 inches.

As a high handicapper, I can't justify dishing out $300-$400 or more for a driver -- I agree with some other C4 driver reviewers that a driver is a tool, not an instant golf swing. But I discovered that the Callaway C4 driver, Callaway's premiere driver back in 2002, could now be had for $100 or less. I bought one from Callaway Pre-owned in "Like New" condition for $90. I also saw them available brand new from Golfsmith for $100, but I went with Callaway because they are known for great customer service. I just got done hitting my C4 on the driving range. It's a good looking driver and it seems to be very forgiving with off-center hits. I hit it very well. I didn't see any miraculous increase in distance or instant improvement in accuracy like some other reviewers, but I do think it's a good, solid driver. Annika Sorenstam and other professional golfers have won tournaments using the C4 so I don't quite understand the criticism about the "poor sound" and "lack of feel" with this club. I'm old enough that I've used persimmon, wood laminate, and graphite head drivers in the past. The sound and feel are fine for me. If you want a pro-quality driver, I think the C4 is a good choice at the current prices.

Customer Service

Callaway's customer service is top notch. The shaft on the first C4 I received was broken during shipping. Callaway sent out a new one the same day.

Numerous Golfsmith drivers (wooden, stainless steel, and graphite heads), Nicklaus Golden Bear HRC driver, Billy Club Thin Face driver (essentially a 330cc Callaway Big Bertha clone), Knight Golf 360cc (TaylorMade clone). I have hit the cheapest club -- the Knight Golf driver -- the most consistently long and straight. It is a $20 driver from Wal-Mart. I think it goes to show that paying a lot of money for clubs doesn't get you a good golf game.

This club helped me break 100. For the high handicapper, this is a great club. It may not be the best club for more experienced golfer, but anyone looking to break into the 80's should consider it. I was always hitting about 210-220 with a generic driver that came with my starter set. I picked up this club brand new for about $80.00 at the local driving range. It has helped me slow down my swing which as actually improved my distance. I am now consistently teeing off anywhere from 230-250. It also has greatly improved my fairway percentage because the ball doesn't get a lot of spin from the face of this club. What used to be a hard slice has now turned into a strong fade. Would buy it again in a heartbeat.

Customer Service

Callaway is usually pretty good.

After a ton of research I decided to get a C4 after my Golfsmith Fire Forged Snake Eyes Driver and 5 Wood were stolen at a local driving range. I can tell you this club is truly worth every penny, to be brutally honest i am horrible off the tee, 90% of the time I fall short of 200, its not swing speed, but accuracy, if anything i try to swing to hard, back to the club though..... So I picked up a 14* C4 hoping it would be very forgiving, true enough, I play alot better than I ever did before, I was in 4 out of the 5 fairways I used it on and i was playing from areas I never play from, this club easily added 50-75 yards, I am now at 230-250 consistently and accuratley. For the high handicapper there is no alternative, buy this club, the sound? thats the sweet sound of success now.

I have 10.8 handicap and I am a very picky guy when it comes to golf equipment. I changed my driver about 12 times in the last 4 years. I tried, Taylormade burner, Adams SC, Adams ST, Porshce 901 driver, Integra 400cc, Titleist 975 L-FE, Ping Tist,etc.. I bought C4 about 3 months ago and it is one of the easiest and most accurate driver I have ever tried.. Sure, it sounds funny and it may feel different but it is very forgiving and accurate. When it was first introduced, callaway spent a lot of money in research & stuff and sold this club for $499. but it did extremely poorly in sales because of its sound... That is why they came out with the fusion driver. They put titanium hitting surface so that it will sound better when you hit it. You can get C4 for about $100 on e-bay. I paid $79 (new w/ head cover) for this club.. it's great!! my friend bought exact same club with me.. (he is 8 handicap) he hits it really really long!! because this club is so light, it will allow you to swing the club w/ higher swing speed.. (thereby increasing the driving distance). In my case, I don't swing the club very hard, so the distance is not that long (average, i guess).. but if you like to swing hard, it will drive the ball very long.. in conclusion, this is a great driver. If your main concern is the performance of the driver, you will love it, but people who care about the sound and feel of the club, stay away..

Callway service is the best.. do I need to explain?

First a little bit of personal info. Age - 33 Height - 5' 10" (175cms) Weight - 157 lbs (71kgs) Driver Swing speed - 93 mph (149klms) Handicap - 14 When it came to buying a new driver, I was tossing up between the C4 and a Hawkeye VFT. I chose the C4 as it just seemed a lot easier to swing. The 10* seems to suit my handicap and swing speed range perfectly with the ball coming out at a mid-high trajectory. I've played about 10 rounds with this club and my worst day was 6/12 fairways whilst my best was 10/12 fairways. Average fairways at 65-70%. My average drive has been 270 yards (245 metres) with the occasional one out to 300 yards. I'm very impressed with the performance and forgiving nature of this club. There are times when I feel as though I've hit the ball near the toe of the club, but I still hit a drive that travels 90% of a ball hit from the middle. Overall, this is a great club for the "B" grade golfer, with the size being just right (not overly large) to inspire confidence on the tee. Ps. make sure you tee it up high.

Customer Service

Very attentive however the saleperson kept telling me that C4 refereed to the swing weight. ITS NOT. It refers to compression cured carbon composite. swingweight is actually D2.
