Model Reviewed: Callaway Steelhead III Driver

I just recently purchased the New Callaway Steelhead III Driver and just had to write a review. Local Nevada Bob's was having a huge 12 hour sale with absolutely crazy prices. I decided on two driver to try in their simulator beforei purchased them. One was the Callaway Big Bertha Titanium 8* and the Callaway Big Bertha Steelhead III 10*. Now I have never been a fan of steelheaded woods since i discovered titanium but man this driver rocked. I usually hit 250-260 max with my current titanium driver and i was hitting an average of 245 yds and straight as an arrows with this steelhead. I just couldn't get a feel for the Big Bertha Titanium, ball was all over the place. So i bought the steelhead and went to the range today and the club made a fool out of me. I could not hit it for the life of me. I don't blame the club, I blame myself because i know what its capable of. A nice club but not the most forgiving. But more then rewarding if solid contact is made every time. 3.5 Stars!

Customer Service

YES, I'VE TRIED JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING. TITLEIST 975&983,CALLAWAY GBB,COBRA 380,ADAMS, TM EVERYTHING, ORLIMAR--ALL IN GRAPHITE SHAFTS. I'VE EVEN HAD CUSTOM CLUBS MADE. A FEW YEARS AGO I HAD STEELHD PLUS(ST SHFTS) IN MY BAG---I WAS VERY CONSISTENT.I EVEN TRIED HYBRIDS CAUSE THEY HAD STEEL SHAFTS.BUT I WAS NOT AS LONG AS MY OPPONENTS & I FELT I WAS LETTING MY PARTNERS DOWN. BUT WHAT I LEARNED IS THAT I JUST CAN'T HIT LITE WEIGHT GRAPHITE SHAFTS. I NOW HAVE DECIDED NOT TO FIGHT IT ANYMORE & BE HAPPY WITH MY 235 TO 255 YD DRIVES IN THE "CENTER" OF THE FAIRWAY. CALLAWAY MAKES THE BEST STEEL SHAFT WOODS IN THE BUSINESS--SLAM DUNK. STEELHEAD3'S ARE BETTER THAN THE EARLIER STLHD&STLHD PLUS MODELS.THEY JUST GO STRAIGHT--THEY ARE SQUARE AND NOT HOOK FACED LIKE THE PLUS MODEL--A CALLAWAY MISTAKE. RECENTLY I HAVE FOUND THAT THERE IS NOT ONE O.E.M. GOLF MANUFACTUER THAT IS OFFERING STEEL SHAFTS ANYMORE.IN THE FUTURE YOU WILL HAVE TO HVE THEM CUSTOM MADE. IT SEEMS THAT ALL OF THE "BIG' BRANDS HAVE SAID THAT TITANIUM AND STEEL SHAfts do not mix well. I BASICALLY THINK THAT THE USGA & THE R&A HAVE ALLOWED THE GAME TO BE DIMINISHED BY THE GOLF CLUB INDUSTRY GREED TO SELL $300 TO $500 CLUBS WHICH 90% ARE MADE IN CHINA. THE TENNIS PROS WERE LIMITED BACK IN THE LATE 1970'S AS TO NOT RUIN THE GAME.WELL THE GOLF RULING BODIES DID NOT "PUT THE BRAKES ON " TECHNOLOGY SOON ENOUGH. NOW SOME OF THE BEST VENUES ARE NOT PRACTICAL FOR PROFESSIONAL PLAY. WE SHOULD GO BACK TO THE 276 YD LIMIT IN THE DRIVES.MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL USES ONLY WOOD BATS---THE PGA SHOULD ROLL BACK PERFORMANCE IN EQUIPTMENT.IT IS NO LONGER "PLAYERS IN SHAPE" IT'S THE BALL IT'S THE DRIVER HEAD--THE SHAFT LENGTH.THE 320 YARD LIMIT IS TOO LONG. WELL GETTING BACK TO THE STEELHD3--THEY ARE THE BEST AND YOU BETTER GET THEM WHILE THEY LAST IN STEEL SHAFTS. GOING GOING ---GONE.

Customer Service

I'VE USED THEIR SERVICE IN THE PAST---ONLY CALLAWAY SERVICE IS SUPERIOR--EVEN BETTER THAN PING 7 PING IS REALLY GOOD.

I thought that this driver was forgiving! Not at all! Frankly, I didn't like this driver. I never hit the ball farther than 180 yards. My average drive with other new drivers, such as the Cleveland Launcher(which I highly recommend), the new Nike Ignite driver, and the Taylormade mens R7 Quad driver, was around 240 yards. And that's only the beginning! If I even mis-hit the club face by a little with the Callaway it goes into peoples' yards and in the woods. For example, with the Cleveland Launcher I'll step up to the teebox and rip it 242 yards, STRAIGHT down the fairway. I would not ,at all, recommend this driver, unless you can already hit it long and straight, on every hole! Long story made short, this is a crappy driver. I would not buy it. I do not like it at all.

Not the longest driver I have ever hit, but the most consistent driver to keep in the short grass at least for me. I have the 11* w/steel Uniflex. The higher loft and shorter shaft gives me more confidence in addition to most of today's golf balls being lower spinning off of woods, the additional loft assists in more carry. I kept up with my overall scores with the Steelhead III and with other drivers I own over the past 6 months or so & I averaged around 5-6 strokes lower with the Steelhead, the numbers don't lie. I had it in play over four days while in Myrtle Beach and didn't hurt for length off of the tee. Even though some were longer off of the tee in my group, my accuracy kept me in play and out of hazards more often than the rest. My ego has attempted to put a titanium head/graphite shafted driver in the bag but I always come back to the Steelhead. I want lower scores when I play instead of my bag looking cool with the latest and greatest big titanium stick on the market.

Customer Service

Absolutely great. I have needed headcovers for my Callaway woods (lost or stolen) and they always send me what I need, no questions asked. Callaway customer service is the benchmark in golf, no one else comes close in my opinion.

I can only hit this driver 220 - 235 yards but I can hit it like an arrow 90% of the times and the other 10% I am barely off line i.e. never out of bounds. Mis-hits go around 180 - 200 yards. I have never been able to hit driver with any consistency and decided to start working on my driving. Started with a Wilson Deep Red which I was unable to control and kept slicing really bad. I then got a Liquidmetal Tour driver and that thing is just plain impossible to hit with any consistency - so I quickly moved on to Adams 363. Now that I was able to hit a long, long way (225 carry and 270-280 with roll) but lacked the consistency i.e. on average 2 shots out of 10 were absolutely magnificent, rest were either huge slices or hooks or even ground hugging hits. I have always been able to hit 3 & 5 woods very decently and the difference between modern drivers and these 3 & 5 woods are (1) length of the shaft (2) weight of the club head (3) size of the club head. I realized that for my swing style I need a heavier club head, which kinda' feels like an extension of my arms - unlike the light weight titanium heads with which I couldn't get the feedback as to where the heck the club head was at any moment. So with this in mind I looked specifically for a steelhead club with a steel shaft. I found Callaway Steelhead III and it seemed really natural for "my" golf swing. So far I have hit about 300 balls with this driver at the range and I've had remarkable consistency. I am ready to accept the fact that to enjoy golf I need to be in the fairway more often than to hit one drive a long way and then hit provisional balls on the next 6 holes. This driver gives me that confidence and seems that I'll play it for a long time. I think I'll be able to break 100 very soon.

The driver that I bought as part of my starter's set has never been working fine for me. It's graphite shaft was far too flexible and generated half of the times a nice slice. But before I concluded that it was due to my driver itself, I have been (re)checking all elements of my swing for a couple of months. The 9 degr. steelhead III with firm flex graphite shaft has completely solved my slice. All balls go straight onto the fairway. Distance has increased with roughly 30 yards and it is huge confidence builder for the rest of my game. As mentioned in other reviews as well the sound of the steelhead is great! As a former hockey player I particularly like that the contact with the ball iscleraly there (instead of the soft touch approach of a titanium driver) I can recommend this club to any player looking for consistency.

Customer Service

Excellent. After 3 months playing the build-in weight chip got lose from the sole. Club has been sent to customer service and I am waiting actually for a new on in return.

Model Reviewed: Callaway Steelhead III Driver and 3 Wood

I have owned/played a number of good drivers over the years, most recently, a Titleist 975D (6.5 degree) with a Harrison extra stiff shaft. When I quit playing regularly, I needed an easier club to hit. I started with the Steelhead Plus (8 degree), and loved it! I was hitting a steel shaft, small headed club farther than my buddies were hitting their Cleveland and Taylor-Made graphite shaft, jumbo clubs. When I broke the shaft on my Steelhead Plus, Callaway replaced it with a SteelHead III. I hit it straight and long almost every time. Near 300 yd drives show up every round, and the norm is abot 265-285. I have had at least 10 300 plus shots over the past year, including 2 in one round! The 3 Wood is just as good! Hits great off of the tee, and plays wonderfully off of the fairway. With both clubs, the small head and relatively short shaft allow the player to set up easily. There is no guessing about ball height or clubface alignment. It might not be a good club for beginners, since the sweet spot is pretty small, but a consistant swing will reveal the strengths of these clubs; consistancy and accuracy. The guys I normally play with are all long-time golfers, and can routinely shoot in the mid/high 80s to low 90s. They all play big name drivers, with graphite shafts and large heads, yet none of them, except on their best drives, can even come close to the distance and accuracy I get out of these clubs. With 240+ 3 woods shots and 275+ drives, I can't see why people play other woods.

Customer Service

I broke the shaft on my Steelhaed PLus and sent it to Callaway for repair. SInce the Steelhead III had just been released, Callaway sent me the new club (Uniflex, 8 degree) in about a week. Cost me nothing! This company knows how to take care of its customers

I've been through 5 drivers and this was by far the best!! The length of the Steelhead III is about an inch shorter than the average driver!! For that reason, i've been able to get rid of my slice as well as add about 15 yds to my drive. Definitely a must have!! Can't wait to try out the matching 3 wood!!

Just purchased the Steelhead III Driver and 3 Wood. Would recommend these clubs to anyone. Accuracy and distance have increased dramatically. Went with a stiff graphite shaft on the driver and steel on the fairway wood. The stiffer shafts have virtually eliminated my right slice. Would estimate an extra 40 yards on my drive, but am nursing a shoulder injury, so not sure as to teh full effect of these clubs. Like the smaller head size and feel of these clubs. If you are not a fan of teeing the ball high up, these are the clubs for you. Worth the price.
