Titleist 975J Drivers

Titleist 975J Drivers

DESCRIPTION

A new 300cc Prototype Driver... the 975J has been seen in many Tour bags early in '01. Very similar look to its wildly popular predecessor the 975D. Just slightly larger and with a different look to the face... scoreing lines are placed in an "insert" look a'la the Callaway GBB. ~CB

Model Reviewed: Titleist 975J 9.5 with various shafts

This is a shaft intensive review. Im a high handicapper and mechanical engineer who happens to love physics. I don’t score low because I simply do not play enough to improve my game, but I do understand much of the physics behind golf (believe me the equipment co’s don’t want you to know). I also make my own clubs and have re-shafted my drivers as often as necessary. My swing speed is 110mph and I have driven the ball 280-290 periodically. I don’t have a major flight flaw; sometimes the ball fades and sometimes is draws. My goal in re-shafting the 975J was increased control – I could not get consistent accuracy with the stock shaft but it did feel great at impact. I admit a large part of the inconsistency was me and not the club itself - I was suffering from some slight errors in hand rotation (or ‘release’ whatever that means) My shaft observations: EI-70 Tour Stiff – excellent shaft for the money – nice high bend point and lower shaft twist than equivalently spec’d competition, i.e. better control. Moderate weight is better suited for faster swingers. UST Pro Force 65 Stiff – didn’t like this one at all…in fact, I hated it. Too much twist (‘torque’ is one of those stupid golf equipment terms that don’t make any sense – how a force is measured in degrees is beyond me). I could literally feel the club head open on toe hits and watch the ball fade/slice away into the rough. Although it was similarly spec’d for twist, it did not feel as tight as the EI-70. This shaft did feel great at impact. Innovative Comp Tour 702 – the best shaft for my swing and not a lot of dough ($38). Only 2.5 degrees of twist or “torque” (yuk, there’s that pesky term again). Going from UST to this was simply breathtaking. Does not feel as smooth at impact. For the ultimate in control nothing beats metal. I’ve used different TTs and Rifle and all work very well for control. You do loose a little distance however. Reshafting a lightweight graphite with a control metal shaft offers lower traj which is good under many circumstances. Also for control in fast swings, don’t even consider the sub 70 gram graphite unless you want to pay more money (I looked at shafts in the $70 range but wanted to use something cheaper – after all its just graphite) Great (and revealing) article about shaft “torque” http://www.golfworks.com/article_display.asp?ArticleID=36&bhcd2=1067288228 In summary, the 975J with a low twist moderate weight graphite shaft is excellent for fast swinging control and distance. Stock shaft should work fine for good golfers with moderate speed swings. Btw, the Titleist does not use a 0.350” shaft – the actual hosel bore is 0.340, so I used a 0.335 with beads. Good luck, don’t dwell on the score and enjoy the outing.

OH MAN !!! I picked this baby up at my local golf store CHEAP ! and i can honestly say that it has changed my game. I have always been a long hitter no matter what club i used, but with this club my accuracy has improved 200 percent. You must a somewhat consistant swing or you will not experience the incredible feel that this driver provide. everytime you hit it in the center it feels like it will go 500 yards, and it almost does. BEST DRIVER OUT THERE!!! even better than the 983 series.

975 J is all around nice to hit and the sound is great. But you have to know how to hit it. I bought the 8.5 degree, at first had to get used to hitting it, but once I did, I can draw and shape shots nicely. Easily drive 280-300 yards. Stiff shaft proforce is nice. Can't go wrong, unless you don't have a good swing. Straiter than the MIZUNO I hit, about the same as the PING but lower trajectory.

Customer Service

Awesome. Club head broke off. No reciept, and they replaced it with a new shaft for free. Hits even better with the new shaft.

Model Reviewed: Titleist 975J - 10.5 loft/El-70 stiff shaft

I have been teeing off with the 3-wood all year due to my inability to control the driver. Just received the 975J (10.5 loft, TT El-70 stiff shaft) and have played two rounds with it. Very encouraging results. Nicely balanced, head not too huge. The stiff, high kick-point El-70 shaft results in a boring trajectory despite the 10.5 loft. Hitting mostly draws. Have not tried to fade it yet. Highly recommended at the currently reduced prices.

I purchased this club for more forgivness, but I lost 15-25 yards.I had the EI 70 True Temper stiff shaft in it and a 9.5 loft. Wrong combo for me,just went to high.Cut my losses and went back to old Mizuno T-zoid with ProForce 65.

OK, I made a mistake. I purchased a C4 driver from ebay with a regular shaft .. I’m an idiot! The C4 had a will of it’s own …. Exit stage left. I went to the local discount shop and traded the limp thing in for the 975 J with a Easton EI-70 stiff shaft. I’ll be honest with you …. I would have traded it in on a broken hockey stick. The 975 J is ok, but my knock off Intrgra with a proforce 65 full length stiff shaft still flies by this club. How can a $85.00 club out perform a $500.00 club? It’s beyond me. The 975 J has a good feel and with a good swing moves out there pretty far. The proof will come this week when I play with it on the course. It will take a lot of concentration and a smooth swing to keep it on the fairway. Wish me luck!!!!!

Model Reviewed: Titleist 975JVS 8.5

I've played my fair share of golf. Big fan of Titleist but they got swept up into the high launch craze with the J's and Jvs/Fle era clubs. They seemed to have scaled that back with the release of the 983s. Can't vouch for that as I haven't hit the 983s as of yet. Got the Jvs directly from Titleist with a proforce 75 xstiff graphite. Had a nice heavy feel. Set up well. Head wasn't 'huge'. Ball came off the face quickly. I hit a high ball to begin with and this driver only accentuated my tendency. I was in the British Isles for a couple of months this spring. Hit the driver really well for a little while but couldn't put a draw on if to save my life. If the hole was into the wind (um, they all are overthere) I was simply in trouble. It was brutal. I started hitting my pt 3 wood into windy tee shots to keep the ball lower! Can you imagine. Truth be told, I hit my 3wood like a dream. It is an x100, 13* PT. Able to work the ball either way. So I reshafted the Jvs with an x-100 and cut it down to old school 43.5" Much better feel and if you're into sound, that is better as well (it is said sound has much to do with people's sense of feel)...so at least I've got that going for me, which is nice. Alas, the club still is flying too high for me. High and to the right no less. Yes, I know, certainly some of you that are reading this have written me off as a b.s. scratch golfer who can't find hit the side of a barn with a fistfull of sand...I do the same thing myself...in fact I thought it might be fun to post a review just so I could re-read. But back to the point, I can't hit the freaking club with a draw. I know it's 'weighted' to left to right. Just doesn't happen for me. My own personal feeling is that the ball is not on the clubface long enough to allow for the draw...someone say Tiger? Back to the 975D 6.5 yo. Have fun out there. "IT'S IN THE HOLE! IT'S IN THE HOLE!"

On a separate note, I've played tons of drivers in the last few months and after all of the smoke cleared I settled on a 975J with a UST Proforce 75. What a driver! I hit the TM360 for a while but it was all over. The 975J goes exactly where you point it. Distance? Long, really long... I'm hitting balls that the ERCII and the TM360 never saw. I can't believe the reviews on the 983K being 10-20 yds longer. After hitting this driver for a couple of weeks, I don't see how anything could be better...

I never thought I would find anything longer and more forgiving than my Cleveland Launcher, but the Titleist 975J is significantly longer and much more forgiving. I have improved my driving distance and number of fairways hit and my tempo is so-o-o-o much better. Accurate and farther with less effort! I highly recommend this club to anyone looking for longer, straighter drives.

Model Reviewed: Titleist 975 J 9.5 AJ Tech Shaft

Three words Laser Guided Missle. I feel like I am in Iraq dropping bombs with precision when I hit this club. The AJ Tech shaft is #1. This club is long and forgiving and if anybody says its not they must have a swing not worth a crap. If you put a good swing on it you will be rewarded. One word of advice though, the shaft makes the club get a quality shaft and you will have a quality club. No more scud shots for me. Titleist makes #1 products. Save your money over the 983 and buy one of these. I actually hit the J better that the JVS. Lfe is kinda hollow feeling but it is long also.
