Titleist 983E Titanium Drivers

Titleist 983E Titanium Drivers

DESCRIPTION

The slightly shallower front-to-back profile produces a flatter initial launch angle. The neutral internal weighting and slightly lower and forward CG location promote a boring trajectory and low spin. The result is a low spin driver for the stronger or high-spin player seeking optimal distance with trajectory control.

Model Reviewed: Titleist 983E Driver 9.5 Stiff Speeder 757

I have to post this review for anyone involved in the "search" process for the right driver. I have been golfing since my teens, when my gamer was a MacGregor VIP persimmon driver. In the 80's I had it reshafted (remember nylon windings?) with a GRAPHITE shaft. Wow, technology!

At this point, I know I've tried every major/minor head or shaft manufacturer to get the combination head/shaft that fits. It's a long arduous spell of trial and error and I've bought from Callaway's snake oil for gullible high-handicapers, to Taylor Made's tech-savvy bells and whistles, to Cleveland's savvy, niche-marketed attempts to emulate its bigger competitors, even so far as analyzing, purchasing, and trying to play my own assembled components from KZG, GolfSmith, UST, Graffalloy, Penley, and Harrison. I used the very first Nike driver (a decent club, actually, made on the cheap by Nike, but a valid entry into the driver market), several Callaways (Hawkeye VFT, the 454, the GBB AND the BBB) back when 7 and 8 degree lofts were "cool." Yes, I've bought ALL that CRAP!!!

Two-three years ago, out of luck, a playing partner generously let me hit his Titleist 983K driver with a Fuji 757 stiff shaft. We played a short par-5, and I noticed what I've always noticed whenever I hit a Titleist driver. THE FEEL. Compounded by the always classy look of Titleist traditional pear shape, I hit the par-5 in two using a 6 iron, and made an easy two-putt birdie.

Later, I won my flight in the County Amateur Championship, hitting with great distance and accuracy. For me, I must admit I got lucky. I literally stumbled into this head/shaft combination and it works for me. Here are things to consider if you are looking at Titleist.

I cannot used a closed face driver. This one lines up and sets up SQUARE.

The ball flight is LOW and penetrating with low spin.

The shaft is ALL IMPORTANT when selecting a driver. The Fujikura Speeder 757 is a heavier shaft. That allowed me to butt trim 1" to 44", and retain overall club mass while gaining control in my driver swing. I tend to get quick (who doesn't), but especially with the driver, the heavy shaft helps me keep my tempo. For some reason, the frequency is just right for me, while promoting smoother swings, solid shots feel like VELVET. The Speeder 757 seems to release at just the right point in my swing, so I don't have to exert extra effort for distance.

I'm not a long hitter (avg. 230-250), so my game depends on staying in the fairway. The 983E does it for me, while ocassionally popping one out to 300 when I do everything thw way I'm supposed to.

Highly recommend.

I bought this driver on eBay despite what I've heard from people about how it's supposed to be for people who really know what they're doing. Trust me, you don't have to be a scratch guy or even a 70's player for this thing to work for you. I am really amazed with this club, especially since I got it after the 975D driver. If I keep my swing at about 80%, I'll hit this driver about 260-280 yards on a good drive. I'm still learning to hit the ball straight more consistenly, but seriously, I got this thing for $90 on ebay. I'm considering the Taylormade r7 460, but still, you can get one of these cheap on ebay. Don't spend tons of money on this driver, though. But if you can get it for cheap, go for it, this is a great club.

Customer Service

Haven't had to use it, but Titleist I'm sure has good customer service.

Love this driver. Playing one with Aldila NV75-S and 9.5 loft. If you have a high swing speed like me, you may prefer an 8.5, but I am happy enough with the 9.5. Might get a little more boring trajectory and more roll with 8.5 and stiffer shaft, but this is by far the best driver I have hit especially for the price you can find these for currently. Can't speak to playability for slower swing speeds, but if you carry it 270+ you will love this thing. Definitely longer than my 975D, more forgiving and equally workable. I have teed it high with this club on the range and the course and find that teeing it lower results in better contact, better trajectory and more distance. Highly recommend this club.

I purchased a used Titleist 983E with a Aldila NV 65-S shaft. It was only $100, actually $70 because I had a $30 coupon at Golf Gal.

The club took a few weeks getting used to as it is very light. I was using a steel shafted driver before. I almost think I would have liked a steel shaft as I have no problems with generating club head speed. Once I got my timing down the club has been working great - you can hit it high, low and work the ball from L to R and R to L. Note - the head is not as big as the current models which i like. I can't think of any negatives with this club. With a solid shot, the ball carries 230-240 and seems to have a better then average roll.

Fantastic club. Currently own a 510TP 8.5 w/NV and this somehow found a way to best my "go to driver". Had longest avg ever @ Golfgalaxy and had longest drive ever with 297 and most ball speed(174). Swing speed is 115+ so this setup is awesome as it doesn't go high and gives me sick roll which I need with high club speed. Good price at $109 in 9/10 condition. True players buy, novices beware.

Customer Service

None, top notch though.

Last wrote a report on 975L-fe and this has served me well.Got an 'E'last season off e-bay conforming without visiting the launch monitor and read that you need a fast swing for this model. Not true. For the UK winter, thought i needed a stronger club although the L-fe and E are 9.5 the E sends it off lower and with less spin, anway in bag last two rounds and this E really suits.Plain neutral set up, not too big a head,no ballooning just remember to tee up high.these are amazing value and was tempted by another for £50 though i would get myself on a monitor and see what shaft gives me the best luanch conditions and get it fitted. That is what i would recommend people doing.off the peg the Pro-Lite combo is hard to beat.In short, powerfull club for good swing days and winter, windy conditions.Buy one and Enjoy.

I wanted to come back and give you my updated review on this club. I was given a ping G2 driver as a gift the beginning of this season. It is very forgiving but distance is not as great as everyone claims. I played with it for about half the season and saw my handicap rise about 2 points. In mid July I went back to my 983E and started crushing the ball once again. My average drives had fallen off to the 260 range, and with my 983E they went right back up to the 285+ range. I even had several drives this summer that were in the 340 range. As for my handicap it is back in the 13 range and all my approach shots have been a 9 iron or less. As for my swing speed I had it measured earlier this summer and I was swinging in the 110-118 range. This is the best driver I have ever owned and I will not let it out of my bag anytime soon. As for it being just for skilled players is just not true I have found it to be very forgiving and if it goes astray it is the guy swing the handle and not the club. All of my golf buddies couldn't believe the difference as they were able to stay with me when I was playing the G2. I even tried the famous cobra sz 440 for a couple of rounds and it had a little more distance than the G2 but the 983E blows both of them away. 983E has explosive distance, the ball just jumps of the face and it has a great sound. The most impressive thing about this club is the yards after it lands, once it lands it just shoots down the fairway for another 20 yards. It may not be as forgiving as some of those big drivers but when you put a good swing on it, there is nothing that can stay with it. If you are in the market for a new driver save your money on those new hyped big drivers and buy a great club that will blow all of them away. My setup is a 8.5 with a graffaloy prolite shaft which gives a very boring trajectory.

A great addition to any players bag. Solid and long off the tee with the GRAFALLOY ProLite stiff shaft. Great launch trajectory and easy to control. A very easy on the eyes sized head that sounds nothing but solid at impact. Just a great club from start to finish.

Most people who shoot BIG numbers like me don't bother to seriously buy good equipment because let's face it they stink. Once upon a time I hit a horrible slice on pretty much all of my woods and then I got this driver for Xmas and it has helped a LOT. Sure I still slice the ball but not as horribly as I used to. Where I was in the woods last year I'm 6/10 times on the fairway now. In fact my average score for nine holes was well above 50 and today I shot a 47! This driver is by no means a cure for poor fundamentals but it definatley improves your game if you are not the greatest of golfers.

While the 983 E isn't as nice to look at as the 983 K, I feel it is still an extremely solid driver. I am not going to tell you I gained 30 yards because it isn't true. I am hitting the ball more consistant since I switched from the Taylor Maden 540. The consistancy puts me in the fairway more often where I will get more distance from roll. I really like the weight that the driver carries. I am not a fan of huge light drivers, I like to feel the club when swinging. Value is great because I got it for 140 to the door canadian.

Customer Service

I haven't ever needed to use customer service for Titleist products but their reps are very friendly.
