Model Reviewed: Callaway VFT 3&5 woods

About 4 years ago I purchased a VFT driver and was very pleased. So then went and bought the 3 and about 6 months ago I purchased a #5 through golfclubexchange for considerably less then the others. I've sold the driver as I recently purchased a 983K which is longer and more accurate then the VFT. I hit the 3 about 230-240 yards and the 5 about 10-20 yards shorter and both are very accurate. I also have the TM Tour 3 and 5 woods which are about the same distance and accuracy wise but have a different trajectory. All have stiff graphite shafts. I don't see any reason to change as these clubs complement my iron distance.

I tried these clubs as I previously had a Titleist 975F 3 wood which was extremely difficult to hit. I had the impression that Callaway made more forgiving woods. How wrong I was. At the range (I hadnt the confidence to use them on the course)I would hit a good shot. Thinking I had it cracked, I would hit another only to see a hook left or a big pull. It was just impossible to string 4 or 5 decent shots in a row. If anything the 5 wood was worse than the 3 (it should be easier!). Later when I looked at this site again, I noticed a lot of guys were not happy with the closed face. I concur. You have to make adjustments to get a solid hit. If you slice the hell out of the ball, this club might suit you. I am always suspicious of clubs with buils in offsets. My mantra is get the swing right - not the club. Callaway need to get back to basics.

IF YOU ADDRESS THE STANDARD VFT 3 OR 5 WOOD AND HIT IT STRAIGHT.CHANCES ARE YOUR DRIVER IS NOT STRAIGHT. NEVER LEARNED TO HIT A DRIVER STRAIGHT OR A LONG IRON STRAIGHT WHILE FEELING VERY COMFORTABLE WITH THESE VFTS. HAS CLOSE CLUB FACE, TO HIT THE VFT STRAIGHT IS A VERY MINIMAL DELAY OF THE ARMS OR OPEN THE FACE TO ACHEIVE A SQUARE FACE. SWEET SPOT IS TOO HIGH FOR A FAIRWAY WOOD WOULD SACRIFICE DISTANCE. CAN HIT LONGER ON THE FAIRWAY WITH IF THE SWEET SPOT WAS LOWER.THE BALL ROLL IS LONG DUE TO THE DRAW. not for players looking and learning the correct swing path. would confused the golfers.

This is my second review of this club. I've been playing them just over two years now, and if my mind has changed about these clubs, it is that I think they are even better than before. One of the earlier reviews is correct: forget what you know about the VFT driver (I've replaced mine with an R540). The fairway woods are outstanding. Yes, if you get a little too quick with your swing, there will be a tendency to draw or even snap-hook them. They are excellent out of fairway bunkers, but not the best out of buried lies (is there any club that is any good at that?). Uphill or downhill lies: no problem. Possibly the best fairway woods ever built

Limited use, but sent me a headcover for an old Heaven Wood by FedEx for free! Can't beat that.

This is the most enjoyable club I've ever used. It has molded a rather ridiculus slice to a much more managable fade and allowed me to start hitting more fairways. I've also gained 30-40 yards of distance with this club because I can let it rip without fear of the disasterous slices I used to hit. If you're already hitting a draw you might want to rethink this club, but for those of us looking for any edge in the battle against the slice, you need this club in your bag (and the 5W to keep it company). It isn't the cheapest club but its worth every penny.

Model Reviewed: Hawk Eye VFT 7 Wood, Firm

When I got the VFT 7 about a year ago, I had a tendency to fade (and sometimes slice) most of my shots. With the 7's draw bais, my ball tend to be very straight and very long, almost as far as my 3 wood! However as I correcting my swing to more of a draw, I tended to snap draw (aka "Hook") most of the time with the VFT 7. This is pretty frustrating, as the 7 was one of the most consistence club in my bag. Trying to tinker with weaker grip. All in all, a pretty good club - exceptional distance with much more feel than the VFT drivers, however if you draw most of your balls this club may not be for you.

This Hawkeye VFT 7 wood has replaced the Steelhead Plus 7 wood in my bag. It is very forgiving and I have increased my 7 wood distance about 7-10 yards. Golfers fighting the hook may have problems with this 7 wood as the face is slightly closed.

Customer Service

Excellent, first class.

A very forgiving fairway wood. I normally use a Steelhead Plus 4 wood and my VFT 4 wood may replace it in my bag someday. (I'm still testing it on the driving range.) Very forgiving on off sweetspot shots (I'm told ;) ) and the distance is much better than my Steelhead Plus 4 wood.

Boy, what a club. All of the Callaway fairway woods are great but the VFT gives you even more added distance and accuracy. I got the System 60 light graphite shaft for my slower swing speed and this shaft is probably the best I have ever hit! I highly recommend these clubs!

Model Reviewed: VFT 3-wood

Three reasons why I bought this club - not very consistent with driver, the good reviews, and have hit the vft 5 wood very, very well. So I bought the 3-wood with system 60 regular shaft and am very pleased with the results. I only use it from the tee and generally get an average of 250 yards and when I miss hit it I will more than not stay in the fairway with decent distance. If I had not hit the 5 wood with the regular shaft I probably would have bought a firm but the regular holds up to my swing - swing speed around 100. The 5 wood also is a fine club from the tee or fairway. All in all I am now looking at the 7 wood to go with the 3 and that should complete my bag as far as woods go.
