Ping I5 Irons

Ping I5 Irons

DESCRIPTION

The Ping i5 iron is a mid-size, stainless steel iron with reduced offset. The perimeter weighted iron shares many of the G5 iron features, including the larger, thinner Custom Tuning Port (CTP) for improved feel. The sole width and cavity size are created for forgiveness and playability. The lead edge and bounce angle are designed for a smoother, forgiving transition through the turf and from the rough.

I am not the kind of person to write a review on anything.
I have played golf for over 40 years and have pursued excellence in swing coaching and equipment. I currently have over 50 sets of irons ranging from the best of Wilson, Spalding etc. over the last 50 years. My favorite clubs after having lived with everything for awhile has always been Mizuno. They quite simply build a great club which has a feel superior to all
others. I also have a few sets of the old Ping Eye 2's
which I think was a very good club but to me always
felt clunky especially around the greens. I have tried
all the game improvement irons including Callaway
(which I simply hate), Wilson, etc. etc. as well as all
the Pings which have come and gone. I did buy a set
of the Ping S 59's but after having played with them
I decided if I wanted to play a blade that the S59 really
didn't compare to Mizuno and wasn't really any more
forgiving than a set of Mizuno's. My favorite Mizuno's
have been the MP-14, MP-29, MP-33, MP-37 and the
one which is my favorite the MP-11 which I have been
playing for awhile.

Anyway after talking with the Mizuno reps I decided to
order a set of the MP 60's which he thought was a better overall club than the MP-32. I have those on
order right now custom. I decided that I would go
and try them out on a swing monitor. I tried them and liked them. The fellow who I was dealing with put a
G5 in my hand and I hit a few. I could not believe what
a well balanced solid club this was. I hit more and more balls over a two day period and mistakenly took
the I5 out in one of my sessions. I was blown away how much better my performance was with this club
than the MP60's. The main difference between the G5
and the I5 is the width of the sole (they both feel great.) I can't believe I did it but I bought a set of I5's without even testing them on grass (which is the real acid test). My rationale is that with the wider sole of the G5 it would not play as well on grass or around the green. I took the set out on the grass and I was
absolutely astounded what a great club this is. They have great balance, easy to work, forgiving, nice trajectory and a joy around the green. I do not get excited about clubs but this is the best club that Ping
has ever made bar none.

I guess when they come I will have a set of Mizuno MP-60's for sale.

The irons set up really well. The feel is as good as it gets from a cast club. The only problem with these irons is that they are a full club shorter than my S59 irons. The ball flight is nice and high and the long irons are easy to get airborn. Over all a great iron as long as you don't mind hitting more club than usual.

I bought a set of ping i5 irons about 3 months ago after being custom fit. I ended up with white dot +3/4. Direction control on these irons is great, so is forgiveness. My issue with these irons is their tendency to balloon. I tried 3 or 4 different shafts to get this to stop but never could get it right. Finally settled on the dynamic gold S400 but they still balloon. Because of this the irons are about 1 to 2 clubs shorter than my titleist 762's. On a really calm day these are pretty good irons but if the wind is blowing even a little these aren't the ones for me. Into the wind these are easily 2 or 3 clubs shorter than my 762's. I got the U, SW, and LW along with my set and I love the wedges. The distance of the wedges seems to be perfect though. I hit the i5 PW the same distance as my 762 PW. Then from there the i5's really drop off in distance. I don't understand why this is happening for me because I am not really long (8 iron from 150) but I do hit the ball a little high most of the time. Overall these are good irons but I just can't seem to get the right ball flight for me.

Customer Service

Ping sent the wrong length first but then had it fixed within a week.

Set out to my Callaway X-12 graphite with X-18, and Ping G5(steel). Didn't realize that the fitter slipped a i5(steel) into the mix.

Distance was equal for all clubs. Huge difference in accuracy. The shots with the i5 had the tighest dispesion by far. The Callaways scattered the most and the G5 were in between.

Club for club the Pings have higher lofts than the Callaways (e.g.,Ping 6-iron 30.5 degrees, Callaway 29 degrees)

In my opinion the higher loft, coupled with the accuracy of the steel shaft, and the reduced offset of the i5 made it the best club for me.

The performance on the course has matched the performance off the fitting mat and on the range. My Hdcp has dipped under 10 due to getting my approach shots closer to the hole.

Customer Service

I ordered my clubs on Friday afternoon and Ping had them at the retailer the next Thursday.

I may be an interesting case study with my "new" Ping i5 irons. I was custom fit for these clubs in February. Evidently, my swing speed is borderline stiff vs reg and my grip size is borderline reg vs.1/32 over. Long story short, I tried these with cs lite stiff shafts and 1/32 over grips. Ball flight was actually funny: line drives with no trajectory, about 6 ft off the ground. Had the shafts replaced with cs lite reg flex and trajectory improved greatly but had trouble hitting the ball on-line compared to my Titleist 822 OS. Finally at the suggestion of my hoem course pro, I had the grips switched over to regual size and the difference is unbelievable. If these clubs were a sportscar, I was driving it with regular gas before. Now that I've switched to premium, the clubs are able to start working for me the way I envisioned. Forgiveness is still a factor me with a 11.6 index. Well hit shots have that unearthly smooth feel. Off-center hits loose some distance but do not suffer much off-line. The look at set-up is classic golf club. It is nice looking down at slimmer, smaller clubhead but still feeling the confidence my old set of 822 OS gave me.

Customer Service

The folks at Ping are very responsive and they truly care that you remain happy AFTER your purchase.

Decided to get a set of Pings because they have the best fitting system. I did the static fitting online and it gave me Blue Dot, Aqua Grip, CS lite reg flex. Did TWO dynamic fittings and guess what? BLUE DOT, AQUA GRIP, CS LITE REG. FLEX. A true test of a club is if you can hit them off grass... I went to a demo day at a grass range just to make sure I could hit the Pings. I was looking at the G5s but the soles were too thick for me. With less offset and thinner soles, the i5 was the way to go. I hit these things DEAD STRAIGHT off of grass. With inserts in the clubheads and the Cushin inserts in the shafts, I can swing with complete impunity, not having to worry about any hand shock on mis-hits. There is a loss of feel but my swing is pretty good so it doesn't bother me. People looking for more feedback should definitely NOT get the Cushin inserts... even still, the i5s may not provide enough feedback. Stick with Titlists or Mizunos for feel. Drawing is not much of a problem with these clubs, I try not to hit too many fades so I can't comment on that. These clubs are awesome to hit and great to look at, the construction quality is excellent, and they fit perfectly. I have a 5-PW set and my 5 goes 175 which is great for a light hitter like me. Very highly recommended.

My only knock is the price ($600+) for only six sticks but you get what you pay for. Well worth the price.

Customer Service

Ordered my set, had them in less than a week. Nuff said.

These irons had a great review in Golf Magazine "2006 Club Test." They give them a five star for forgivness & a five star in distance. They have that & much more! The heads are not to big or to little. They are just right! When you hit this irons they feel & perform great! Can't say enough about them. What it all boils down to is you get what you pay for!

I traded a set of Ping I3 Oversize irons with graphite shafts for a new set of I5's with rifled shafts and D3 swing weight. The I3's are great clubs, but a little light and bouncy, as compared to the I5's.

Although the I3's are pretty forgiving, they're not as forgiving as the I5's, especially on off-center hits. An off-center hit with the I5's is more likely to result in a push or pull just left or right of the green than a full hook or slice that you might experience with the I3's.

Although the I3's are great out of the deep ruff and 2nd cut grass, they're a little bouncy off short fairway grass or bare dirt.... but that problem goes away with the I5's and a little more swing weight.

With the I3's, a miss-hit behind the ball can result in a flubbed shot that rolls anywhere from 10-100 feet. But with the I5's, that same miss-hit will carry 50-150 yards, making your next shot to the flag much easier than the one you just blew.

And chipping is much easier with the I5's, in part because of the additional swing weight. You can think less about regulating your swing speed and more about striking the ball and following thru to the target.

My opinion is the I5's allow you to relax a bit with your game, because you don't need to think about every aspect of your takeaway, backswing, downswing and follow-thru.... and because it allows you to relax.... you quickly learn to swing these clubs with more confidence than the I3's.

I know there are other clubs that will give you better feedback more quickly than these, but I'd rather watch the ball fly 150 yards and land just left or right of the green, than to watch it slice or hook and tell me what I did wrong. It's a lot more fun to play with a set of irons that forgive an occasional bad shot and still give you some feedback, and that's what these irons will do for you.

Bottom line: After purchasing these irons, I knocked 8 strokes off my previous average.

Customer Service

Better hope you don't need a 50 degree nickel finish wedge. Mine was backordered once, then shipped with an unmatched serial number after waiting 3-weeks for it. After returning it to Ping, they backordered it again and the order eventually required the assistance of a customer service manager to get it straightened out. Eventually, I received all of my clubs, but it involved a bit of a wait for them to get everything right.

Another problem was that I ordered my wedges with D5 swing weight, but when I received them, they weighed D6 at the Pro Shop. I spoke to Ping about it and they said I could send them back for a double-check, but after the backorder problems I was having with the 50 degree wedge, I decided it was probably better to hold onto them and stop complaining or I might never get a complete set of irons, so I never sent them back. Turns out they work just fine, so I guess alls well that ends well.

Bottom line: If they have everything in stock when you place your order, you'll probably receive everything you purchased. If they don't have it in stock, good luck. You will eventually get it, but don't believe everything they tell you about delivery dates.

Having tried almost every Ping Iron over the past few years (along with just about every other brand as well), I can honestly say that this is the best iron Ping has ever produced.
They have absolutely nailed the design on these irons; perfect combination of forgiveness and playability. The sole design is outstanding--less bounce than earlier Ping models, these irons are great from any lie.
Factor in a beautiful fit and finish, Ping's excellent fitting options and customer service, and you have a truly classic iron.
I predict that this model will rival the Eye 2 for longevity.
If you are a 10 hcp or less, do yourself a favor and give these a look--you will not be disappointed.

Hey golfers, the PING I5 is for real!!!! I use to play the s59 irons blue dot and couldnt be confident with them. I just purchased the I5 yesterday and love them and being a 2 handicap these clubs let me do what i want with the ball flight plus forgiving off shots. I highly recommend these irons for a more advanced player and the g5 for a teen+ handicap. Im so excited to play golf now and love the look of these clubs. And always PING holds its value for years my father still plays his PING EYE irons. and lasted a very long time and still going. I really love these clubs and highly reccommend them. And on top of that i use to play the R7 driver and the PING G5 driver blows that away. BUT I WILL NEVER GIVE UP MY SCOTTY CAMERON PUTTER FOR A NASTY LOOKING PING PUTTE:)
