Ping I5 Irons

Ping I5 Irons

DESCRIPTION

The Ping i5 iron is a mid-size, stainless steel iron with reduced offset. The perimeter weighted iron shares many of the G5 iron features, including the larger, thinner Custom Tuning Port (CTP) for improved feel. The sole width and cavity size are created for forgiveness and playability. The lead edge and bounce angle are designed for a smoother, forgiving transition through the turf and from the rough.

Over the last 5 years I have tried Every Ping model made. From the original "Karsten" Iron to todays latest designs.I own several Ping Iron sets and have to say that the i5 model is my favorite. The g2 iron is very forgiving, but not a very workable choice. I have never really gotten used to the offset and thick top line. The g5 iron is a upgrade in appearance, but to me dosent feel as good as the g2. The s59 model is a great set for someone with a very consistant swing, they are very workable and pretty forgiving for a blade style iron.I have a set of isi irons that I use as a back up to my i5's, they are a awesome feeling iron, workable and very forgiving. But again, the i5's are my favorite set. They to me incompass the best of everything, they are forgiving on off days, set up beautifully with a thinner topline and just enough offset to comfortably work the ball. They also are a very nice looking iron with the sand blast finish and tasteful ping logo. They feel great(butter) when hit well but let you know when you dont with a not to harsh feel, and still track pretty well without major distance loss. I also like the bounce of the club. Its just right for me. The g2 has alot of bounce the g5 a little less and the i5 slightly less than the g5 and to me is just right(at least for my swing)The stock cs lite shaft is also a great all around performer. It has more of a high trajectory(which I like) but if you like a lower flight you may want to consider a different shaft like the "rifle" or "dynamic gold". Overall, I think Ping has produced another winner with the i5 .

Traded in the G2's for the i5's because I needed less offset. My miss was always a 20 yard draw. The i5's feel a little lighter, but they perform very well. I can now work the ball both ways with ease. Stick to the pro-series wedges for more playable shots around the green.

Model Reviewed: Ping I5 irons

After a year of lessons I was looking for
some irons that have less offset, and that allow me to work the ball--while still being a tad more forgiving than blades. And these clubs are exactly that.

Just gripping the clubs and lining up there is a feeling of confidence--love the painted white line on the clubhead--and they
deliver a very satisfying and solid feel at impact. I have found them to be the most accurate clubs for my swing I've ever tried--while delivering an extra ten to twelve yards of distance. Didn't have to
alter my swing in any way to make these clubs work. They're really quite long, and quite easy to hit-- and without having to make allowances for offset you can aim right for the flag unless its really windy.

This assessment re: distance and the I5s being easy to hit was also born out in Golf Magazine's club test for 2006. For in the "better player's" category--for players between a 0 and 10 hcp-- the Ping I5 irons were the only clubs that got 5 stars for both distance and forgiveness--though Mizuno MP-60 and Bridgestone J33 outscored the I5s for feel and playability.

I got the CSL shafts, in stiff flex, with the cushin (which adds 10 grams of weight, but
also increases feel while dampening the jarring feeling on mis-hits. And with the
I5s there is less of a distance penalty on balls slightly mis-hit. I'm 6 feet tall, 210 pounds, and with slightly short arms, and I ordered my clubs in
green dot (2 degrees upright) and with an extra 1/2 inch of length--so I opted for a slightly heavier swingweight--D2.

DO GET FIT for these clubs, you'd be making a mistake not to--I got fit TWICE
and was glad I did, as something didn't feel right with my first fitting. Most fitters will charge you between $35 and $75 for a fitting
(with the fitting being free if you wind up ordering your clubs from the fitter. For the economy conscious, it might be cheapest to get fit, and then either order on Ebay, especially if your fitting is pretty conventional--or order from a mail order place like Edwin Watts (where you will probably get the wholesale price, as well as no tax. If you get a fitting at a local pro shop that also has a golf course attached to it, while finding that a chain
such as Edwin Watts has offered you a better total price than where you were fitted, you could mention this to your local pro shop and say you'd order from the pro shop if they'd be willing to make it up to you by offering a free round of golf--they'll probably be willing for it would offer them a way to compete with the big chains--otherwise there is a strict licensing policy regarding pricing.

One last thing. Ping's reputation for customer service certainly held up in my case. When I had Edwin Watts inform the Ping factory that I had a golf weekend in Pebble Beach lined up only 8 days follwing my order being placed, I was promised the clubs would be there in time. Result: my clubs arrived FOUR DAYS following the order being placed. That's outrageous customer service--custom-built clubs arriving in just four days!

Customer Service

The Ping folks in Arizona were extremely helpful, experienced/knowledgable in my telephone conversations. I came away with a wonderful feeling not only about my clubs--but about this company.

Great irons that proved to be just as forgiving for my swing as the G5's and the Mizuno MX-900's in several range sessions prior to buying. That was a pleasant surprise to me, because I did not really care for the appearance of the oversize heads in some of the other models I was considering. I consider the i5 a mid-size iron from appearance at address, but with oversize iron forgiveness.

My custom fitting came out at 4* upright + 1/2", and I ordered these through Ping Wrx with Rifle 5.0 shafts at D2 swingweight, which is a little heavier than their standard. They were a hit with me from the first round with them, and a friend of mine liked them so much he just traded in his G2's and ordered a set of i5 with graphite shafts.

Customer Service

Ping has lived up to the fabulous reputation they have with customer service. Fast turnaround time with my questions, with building the set to my specs, and with the quality of work done by the Wrx department at Ping.

Terrific upgrade of the classic Eye 2's. I've been a Ping guy for 15 years using the eye2 irons, but wanted even more improvement with my irons. The I5's delivered big time. The less offset feature and being correctly fitted since i'm 6'4 were the ticket. The first time I swumg the 9 iron from 140 out, I hit it to 3 feet...no kidding ... a regular Ping commmercial. They wont let you get away with murder though, as a long iron hit low on the clubface well send a message to your hands. Great feedback. I ordered the set with true temper dynamic gold w/sensicore shafts. You have another very satisfied customer... thanks PING

Received the set 2 weeks after ordering...impressive

Excellent clubs. I have played about 10 rounds with them. They are solid thru the set. I went to Ping in Phoenix to get fitted and my clubs were done a week later. The new design is a keeper. I tried the g5 on the range; they are for higher handicappers. If you can play a little, these clubs are worth the look. Forgiving, yet you can work the ball. I have the cs lite shaft with the cushin insert. The lofts are about 2 degrees stronger than my last set, so I picked up a little distance. I can swing easy and not lose anything. My last round I hit 17 greens in reg.

Customer Service

Ping is the leader in custom fitting and customer service. Years ago I took my ISIs to Ping to check the loft and lie. They found a small bend where the shaft and clubhead meet in my 6 iron, said it would be ready the next day. When I went to pick it up and pay, they had warranteed the replacement. I had had the clubs for almost 4 years and the fix was free. This is why I buy Ping. EXCELLENT COMPANY.

Good feeling club with normal distance. The midsize head is great, but it still has too much offset for most low handicappers. They are very forgiving and a good overall club.

Customer Service

Great as usual.

Having been out of the game for almost 20 years and using a set of dinosaur Ram Lasers, I needed to invest in a decent of clubs. I had five practice rounds with Wilson Ci6 ande Di6, Callaway x-18 and Ping G5. I REALLY wanted to like the Callaway but found them chunky with little feel - the Wilson were much better in this department. The offset on the G5 was off-putting and, while they are very forgiving, I found the ball flight too how and the response lacking for pure shots. I then hit 80 balls with an I5 6 iron and fell in love with the feel, response, trajectory and look at address. On this basis, I committed to a set of I5 irons (3-9 with 48 and 56 loft tour wedges). First round I played with them I broke 80 and felt like there was plenty more. Love the wedges, in particular, and find the combination of feel, response yet forgiveness very appealing. Would recommend anyone contemplating a new set of clubs to try these.

Customer Service

Bit of a problem here as I am in Aus. Took 6 weeks for delivery after having promised 2-3 weeks and, when they came, the specs were spot on except they were G5s not I5s. Remarkably, the replacements came within a week!

I have been playing Titleist 735 CM's and there is absolutely nothing wrong with those irons, especially with Rifle shafts, but they simply are not forgiving enough for me. There are days when my game is really on, and I could probably hit any club well, and then there are those days...well let's say not hitting a Titleist well results in a loss of distance and direction that is fairly severe. I had played Pings before (S59's) and decided I needed to go to something nice enough that when I was on the game, I could work the ball around a little, but when I was off, I would still get some forgiveness. I tried both the G5 and the I5 and decided the I5 was a better fit for me. Definitely a nice club and forgiving enough that if you have a golf swing, the will forgive it being off a bit. Certainly NOT as forgiving as the G5, but the offset on the G5 was giving me fits after playing Titleist. I am happy with these, and don't plan on moving to anything else! If you are shooting in the mid 70's to mid 80's, I would recommend trying these out. They certainly have me under 80 more often than I was.

Customer Service

Ping has probably the most responsive customer service group in golf.

I'm very impressed with these clubs, the I-5 irons, black dot, +1/4 inch, ZZ65 stiff shafts. I purchased them from a local club fitter and I've only used them for 27 holes, but I can already say these are keepers. I was playing the I-3's oversized, but I reached a point that I felt the I-3's had too much offset for my game and I wanted more of a player's club. Now for the review. These clubs are the same size as the I-3's, with basically the same lofts. I noticed the ball flight was slightly lower, which I also wanted and may be due to the ZZ65 stiff shafts that I ordered them with. The clubs felt a little lighter than the I-3's and with the reduced offset, allowed me to aim for the flags versus to the right side of the pins/greens. On the last hole I played yesterday, I hit the pin from 130 yards!!! Ended up with a tap in par, but that never would have happened with the I-3's. I'm still getting used to the irons, but I'm very pleased with what I have seen so far as an example, I hit the pitching wedge into a stiff breeze from 120 yards and I air-mailed the green. As you can see, I still need to figure out the yardages these clubs hit the ball. Also, after the fitting for these clubs, I realized my dot had changed from a blue dot to black dot. I was fit for my I-3's at the HQ site in Phoenix, so I know the blue dot was correct at the time. Great clubs, look is more like blades than the I-3 oversized irons, and are a pleasure to hit.

Customer Service

Ordered on a Friday and received them on the following Thursday and two days of that time, the clubs were in shipping with Fed Ex. Less than a week for the special order, ZZ65 shafts, +1/4 inch and yellow grips, so you know they didn't just pull them off the shelf. Also, used the www.pinggolf.com website numerous times to get answers to my questions. What an invaluable resource!!! I can't say enough positive about Ping!
