Ping S57 Irons

Ping S57 Irons

DESCRIPTION

The S57 Iron provides golfers who prefer a tour-inspired design the ideal blend of feel, forgiveness and distance control. The small, stainless steel head is engineered as a players iron with an increased moment-of-inertia. A dense tungsten toe weight, longer hosel and a small cavity combine to raise the MOI for the additional forgiveness.

I have played a lot of irons and I have to say that these are one of the best. They have all the playability of blades with the forgiveness of a cavity back. Unlike others I have not lost any distance with these from my previous irons which were Mizuno MP-37. I was worried coming from the forged Mizunos about how these irons would feel but I have found them to feel great off the club face. They are not as buttery as the Mizunos but they feel soft and powerful when struck, the only thing I could equate it to is when you hit a racquetball. You feel the ball compress then rocket off the face. If your looking to step up to blades but still need a little forgiveness these are definitely the irons for you.

So, I would like to preface this review with two points, maybe three. I read every possible product evaluation and review available before making a purchase, and I have never contributed my feedback on a product until now. I feel I owe it to other golfers who like me rely on these quick summaries. I don’t work for PING either. I have demoed and been properly fit for all the iron sets I have gamed, which is a crucial element in performance. I owned and played sets to include Mizuno MP-30 and MP-32, Titleist 804os and 735cm, Nike blades (waste of $$), and Ping i15’s.

What I learned from that journey is that the S57 iron set is perfect for the better ball striker who reliably shoots in the low 80s or better. The accuracy, workability, consistency, and feel are unmatched. They inspire confidence during the pre-shot routine from the moment you pick up the iron. The top line at address is balanced to provide confidence from both fairway and rough lies without even noticing it. The offset allows the experienced golfer to adjust each shot for maximum workability, and these puppies throw darts. My natural shot is a mid draw, and I couldn’t be happier with how these iron stick to greens.

Yes, for those of you wondering, these irons do offer some advanced technological forgiveness. Most important of which I believe is the sole width and tungsten weight in the toe. Feel wise, there is nothing better when you pure one… Crisp. And I think you will notice I didn’t say softer, Mizuno rules the market on that front. I worked my way from larger cavity backs to more blade like irons and now shoot consistently between 75-83, with an 8 handicap. Obviously each swing like golfer preference varies. But I challenge you to, at a minimum, consider these irons if you fit the criteria and are comparing similar models from other manufacturers. The course performance of is unparalleled. You can pick up a new set on EBAY for $400. Good luck in your search.

I have to start by saying if you would have told me 10 years ago I would be a Ping guy I would have laughed. I have always thought their club heads looked like shovels. Not anymore. Besides my wedges, it's all I have in the bag. S57 irons, G-10 3-wood and Driver. At my best, I was a +2 and always played blades (various models of Hogan Apex). I averaged 50 rounds (at least) a year. Last year I was lucky to play 15. I now play to a 4 or 5 and don't have the chance to practice much. The blades have outlived their usefulness. I was convinced I needed a more forgiving club but wasn't willing to go from forged to cast. The Pings changed my mind. I tried the AP2, Adams CB1, X-Forged from Callaway and the S57. The AP2 and CB1 both had higher trajectories than my current clubs and I just didn't like the feel of the Callaways. The S57 was everything I was looking for....lower trajectory, thin top line blade look, minimal offset and forgiveness. You can hit these things off the toe, heel or sweet spot and not have a wide shot dispersion and the distance control is great. Not sure if a higher handicap would find these as appealing but for a low handicapper who doesn't play to where his game was 5 years ago, they make the game a little less frustrating. They are definitely worth the investment.

Can I just start off this review by saying Gotti40 who done a review of these clubs is a totally idiot, he’s probably the kind of guy that shoots in the 90s (if he’s lucky) and these clubs were too good for him. I’ve been using the ping eye 2s which he is referring to as being better than the s57s for over a year now. I can confirm they are good clubs but the pings57s are in a totally different league. The eye2s are the most forgiving club ever made, that’s probably why Gotti40 likes them so much. Anyway enough about him- the tube is just want attention anyway. If you do yourself one favour regarding golf, it is try these clubs- NO JOKE! They are amazing, since moving from my eye2s my iron play is on a TOTALLY different level. Every shot is so solid and penetrating and the feedback is amazing. Plus I challenge you to find a better looking iron. If you want to take your game to the next level, these are the kind of irons you need. Eye2s and the like will only mask your swing faults which is fine if your happy to play like Gotti40(brain cells)

Awesome clubs IMO! Great look and feel for my game, and as many times as I like to try new things, these will be in the bag for quite a while. X100 shafts are a great fit, and although I only have one round in with them, the confidence and shot making potential I am getting with these clubs makes me only more addicted to this game. Decently forgiving on toe misses, right amount of stop control, and just a very versatile club head.

I'm a regular Joe golfer. Mid handicap play every week kind of guy and o am telling you, you do not have to be a scratch or pro level golfer to play and love this set of clubs. This is a very forgiving set of irons with a solid but very soft feel at impact that any one will love. Do what I did. Test the e15's and say to your self "really? What is all the advertising about " I3's feel better and produce the same results. Then try the I15's and try to find a reason to like them. Then pick up the S57 and say "oh my god" I finally found a set of clubs that are worth the money the manufacture is asking! This set of irons is so pin point accurat both in distance and direction with a wonderful ball flight and the most sexy combination of firmness and soft feel on impact I ever experienced. You just need to try them even if you have been told your handy cap is to high. This is an amazing set of clubs and after trying them there is no doubt in my mind what I'm going to spend my hard earned cash on.

Just got myself a set of Ping S57 (3-9). They are surpisingly forgiving, however deadly accurate. S57's are not the longest clubs I've played, but they give absolute control. The head is a bit small, but that should not be a problem for a decent golfer. And the way they allow you to shpae a shot, is amazing.

Having played Callaway's X-12's for over 5 years, I finally felt I was ready to make a switch from a cavity back to a muscle back/bladed iron. With my X-12's I never felt I had good distance control, I could never "feel" the shot and I was not able to shape the ball since the X-12's are meant to be very forgiving and correct miss hits, slices and hooks etc. After researching and demoing clubs I narrowed my search down to Ping. My father has a set of I3's, they have great customer service and they are very durable/hold their value. I narrowed it down to the I15's and the S57's. Although the I15's were a very forgiving club it felt a little bulky and I didn't have the pure feeling when I poked a pure shot. As I demo'd the S57's I could feel a great shot and I could easily shape it. My trajectory was much lower than with my X-12's which allowed me to finally be able to control the distance. Not to mention for a Blade, this club is very forgiving. When I did miss hit it, I could finally feel it in my hands yet the ball still wasn't too far off target. The distance was amazing, I have always been a long hitter, but with a lower trajectory this ball was rocketing off the club face. I hit my 7 iron 175 with my X-12 and I was hitting it 190 in the air with the S57 (However I have always hit a stiff shaft and the PING rep who was fitting me laughed at me and told me I needed extra stiff since my 7-iron speed was 95mph, this could have helped with my distance too). I definitely recommend anyone in the market for a blade yet wants to retain some forgiveness to check these out. These things are the real deal. As long as you are a good ball striker, you can play these clubs. It doesn't matter what your handicap is.

Customer Service

Fantastic, I called to see if I could have my clubs expedited and instead of waiting a month I received them in two and a half weeks.

Mizuno's had a great pureness when hit well but if you miss hit them you sure felt it and they were not as forgiving. The Nike Forged didn't feel that good and the Cleveland CG7's had too much spin.

When I say I am the best, I mean it. I am not like some other people (i.e. FamousDavis) who says they are great ball strikers, but golfs in jeans, has a gut and loses to some little piss ant after yapping about some match for months. I have the build of Tiger and the smooth tempo of Freddie Couples. Combine that with a good putting stroke and an extremely high Golf IQ and I think you can see where I am going with this. Last golf season, I lost three golf balls all year (I keep track). I lost one in a pile of leaves and two in the drink although the one instance was caused by a hack yelling in my back swing. I typically shoot well under 70 and had a 63 last year (course record) at a course most of you would have problems breaking 90. By the way, I had the old course record at 64. Pretty much the only competition I have in this area is with myself. I am in the market for a new set of clubs although I shouldn’t waste my money after how good I played last season. Thank goodness dropping a thousand or two for me dents my bank account as much as picking up a pack smokes hurts the hacks that visit this site. So let me tell you about these new Ping 57s that I tried out and you should definitely listen. I tried these clubs after playing the Ping Eye originals for years. First off, I was extremely disappointed with the customer service from the Ping Rep. It took him an extended amount of time to find the shaft that I wanted Project X 5.5. For high and mid handicappers, avoid this shaft (not forgiving enough). And please don’t even try these clubs or anything that resembles a blade and keep your dignity. Let me say for all the buildup, these clubs are weak. I could do whatever I wanted with them, but even on pure shots there still was about a 4 yard distance range. The rep said that was in my head, but I hit four shots at a flag about 170 and was off by anywhere from 3-5 yards. I, of course knew, this was the result of an inconsistent club and clearly had nothing to do with my swing. To prove my point I grabbed my old sticks and hit three more all within three 3 yards of the pin, one of which looked like it hit the pin and could have been a hole in one (would have been my ninth). Needless to say the rep didn’t question me again, and agreed with everything else I told him and was taking notes about why this club underperformed. I would go with Mizuno’s as I have been disappointed in all of Ping’s new clubs. For hacks, my dad plays the G-15’s and has been playing better this year. He shoots around 90. I guess occasionally the apple does fall far from the tree, lol. Later ladies and wish me luck in my club search.

Customer Service

I already answered this. It was slow and the guy kept looking at my shots with a dumbfounded look on his face. He also was very vocal about how good my swing was and before I knew it, there was a crowd gathered around me again at the range.

I demo'ed these irons last year as a replacement for my Mizuno blades. Got fitted for a blue dot, stiff shaft and bought a 2-PW set. Don't use the 2 iron but it came with a set I located. These are fantastic clubs. I can move the ball around with them and they are pure warm butter when you hit them...I do find I take an extra club with these but that is an easy adjustment. I believe another reviewer expressed that if you are above an 8 handicap, get the I 15 or G 15, but under-get the S 57 blades...you will never regret it. They are not cheap but they are well worth it.
