Titleist DCI 990 Irons

DESCRIPTION

From Titleist: The 990 Iron features a "variable muscle back cavity with progressively biased weight throughout the set. Long irons are weighted to promote playability and higher ball flight. I bought my 990's 1 month old off a scratch player. He liked them, but moved onto Mizuno MP33's. These clubs have a very sweet feel when you hit them well. I can gain about 2 clubs on my old irons. Some people say these irons aren't for higher handicap golfers, but i play off 13, and I can hit them very well. I would recommend these irons to anyone that can hit around the middle, but it doesn't have to be smack on every time.

I got these irons after debating between these and Hogan Edge Pro's. Nothing against Ben's clubs, which were excellent too, but I am so thrilled with these. They have such a soft, but powerful feel. The balls jumps off with such a solid feel, yet soft as warm butter off the face. I also tried the new CB690's, which are extremely nice too, but liked these so much, I couldn't justify moving up that high in price. Much better than the current "flagship" iron, their 792's. The look is also very nice. A subtle brushed metal, instead of a bright chrome. If I had to do it again, I'd buy them in a heartbeat! Also, they seem to have a great balance/feel to them, especially around the greens. They make chipping a pleasure and inspire confidence. I've hopped around every now and then to different irons, but feel these will be here for a time to come, especially if I keep scoring so well with them. Actually, if the scoring goes sour, I know one thing, there's no blaming these clubs!!

I have found the clubs to be "precision" powered irons. In that this club really forces one to focus on swing mechanics and control in order to get the optimal performance we expect from Titleist. Adjusting to shorter shaft forced me to get full extension allowing my swing to naturally adjust with the clubs minimally affecting my shotmaking. Overall I found the clubs to be very playable with good setup to hands feel. Solid club with accuracy to boot. Precision tool in the right hands. Very pleased with overall performance

For two years I have been struggling with the setup of the Callaway X-12 set I purchased. After 1/2 a bucket at the range with the 990's I increased my consistency ten fold. This is due to the 990's clean "no nonsense" design. The first round with them harvested an amazing 6 under my handicap score of 78. The feel of impact with these clubs is astonishing to say the least. The low boring ball flight with massive spin make me look like a tour star. I would have paid 3X the amount for the confidence these clubs bring to my game. I highly recommend that anyone looking to make the move from the high handicappers clubs (callaway...ETC) Give these clubs a serious look. You won't regret it.

Been playing golf for about 1 year now. Finally decided to get myself a decent set of clubs. Been hovering around the low 90's for awhile. Bought the 990's because the reviews I read about them were pretty good. Didn't go the the range, just went straight out onto the field and played. The clubs were fantastic. True, if you miss hit them, the club will let you know. (But isn't that every bloody club?!?!). But when you get it on the sweet spot...HOME RUN BABY!! Smacked a 2 iron 230 meters on a par 4. Never been confident with the low irons, but these clubs are fantastic. Look great too. The smaller head might seem daunting for some golfers, but trust me, they aren't that hard to hit with. Just as long as you have a decent swing. Been going to the range to get a more consistent swing (p.s I hit 83 that day..then again..I was absoluting ripping the driver that day too). Recommended to those that have a consistent swing, and are willing to put some time at the range. Price for them has dropped, so if you see them on E-bay or wateva, buy them and I guarantee you won't regret it. Cheers!! Golfer from Down Under ~~~~~~~BE THE BALL!!!! BE THE BALL!!~~~~~~

I am amazed when i read the reviews that are posted here. For someone to say these clubs have a horrible feel even on a solid hit must just want to leave a bad review. These clubs feel SOOOO fine on a solid hit! Personally I can barely feel the ball leave the face on a center hit. When i hit one of those the ball has an amazing powerful ball flight that just screams out there and still lands softly on the green. Silky smooth! True that when you mis hit them they do not feel as sweet or have as much distance but that is true with any club. I went to these clubs because i was tired of the inconsistancy of perimiter weighted clubs....more forgiving but less accurate and it helps you cheat on your swing. This is fine for a weekend golfer who doesnt want to put the time into his game...but i wish to become as close to scratch as i can and these clubs are helping me. I recently went to a single digit handicap for the first time in my life. I have actually gained distance from these clubs. Greens that i was going into with a five iron now requires a light six or heavy seven. Even my three iron is outdriving some of my buddies 3 woods off the tee. I love the 990's for many reasons. I love the fact that when you hit one of the toe or heel it lets you know exactley what happend! That when you put a great swing on the ball you are rewarded for it! (Funny how i tend to do that more often now than with my old perimater weighted) That when you have an approach shot you know exactly how the club you choose will fly and land when you put a good swing on it! And of course i love the look of them. They are helping my game quite a bit. You have to be honest and know that you will not put a perfect swing onto any club you own everytime or we would all be on tour....but if you are willing to put some time into your game and even hit the center of your club 80% of the time then these irons will serve you well!

I've been playing these clubs for about a year now and i have to say they are excellent clubs. For anyone that is looking to purchase a set of these clubs, do one simple test. go the range with your current clubs and put a piece of tape (masking tape works best) on your 6 iron and go at it. after 20 hits check your impact pattern. if all or most are within about a 1 inch diameter (about a quarter or so) then you should be able to play these clubs well. if your larger than a quarter then stay away reguardless of your handicap. i have found that on a miss-hit these clubs provide a very harsh feel. but it makes is abvious so if your lookin to really improve your game, the distinc feeling of a miss-hit will help you.

I have played these for a few weeks now. I can say these are really sweet clubs that work well with the S-300 sensicore shafts. These clubs are very accurate and feel great. The long irons are very easy to hit. Clubs put great amounts of spin on the ball.

Very nice clubs. I would recommend these to any intermediate to advanced golfer. However, difficult to hit for beginning golfers. The muscle-back provides the feel of a blade iron and the forgiveness of a cavity-back iron. I can tell my game has got better and have reduced my slice and hooks after changing to the titleist 990 irons.
