Wilson Ci6 Irons

Wilson Ci6 Irons

DESCRIPTION

The Wilson Staff Ci6 iron is targeted directly at the mid-handicapper. It looks and feels like a precision player's instrument but incorporates some of the more forgiving features of the Wilson Staff line. The mid-size head features thin toplines, slight offset and a small undercut cavity. The perfect blend of classic looks and maximum control. An Elastomeric Dampening Layer gives a unique cavity coating which reduces vibration by 1/3. The Wilson Staff Ci6 comes with either Taper Tech Steel Shafts or a Nano-Tech graphite shaft. The steel shaft has a progressive tip design transitions from high tip flexibility in the long irons for higher launch, to a stiff tip in the mid to short irons for a lower launch and maximum control. The graphite shaft is the most consistent graphite shaft ever, with a stable tip for mid to high launch angles.

The CI7 is the successor to the highly acclaimed CI6. It is fitted with an ultralight True Temper TX105 steel shaft. It is also available with a UST Proforce V2 graphite shaft. The back of the iron is coated with a rubberised paint that Wilson claim reduces vibration. All I know is that it feels kind of strange to the touch.

Firstly looks. A highly polished cast head that has a top line that is thicker than the PI7 but not as thick as the DI7. There is very slight offset in the long and mid irons. My set was purchased as 4 iron thru 50 degree gap wedge. The lofts are approximately 3/4 club stronger than the PI7s. The head has a deep undercut channel that keeps the weight down at sole level, thus helping to get the ball airbourne.

My first round impressions are very favourable. These clubs are most certainly easier to hit than my previous PI5s. I have a tendency to hit the ball off the toe and where the PI5 was punished in terms of direction and about half to 3/4 club loss of distance the CI7s produce a perfectly reasonable shot that loses about 5 yards. I am hitting these balls much straighter than my PI5s which are regarded by many to be a players club in the same league as the FI5.

Feel off the clubface, whilst not a butter soft as a forged head is still satisfyingly soft for a cast club. I must confess that I have difficulty in telling the difference between cast and forged in the first place.

Trajectory is high but the iniital launch angle is quite penetrating. The ball climbs steadily and then flattens out at the top of its arc landing softly.

In realy playing conditions these clubs are between 3/4 and one club longer than my PI5s.

I do have a couple of issues.

Firstly I have no idea how durable the rubber paint is on the back of the head, but given the reputation Wilson has for build quality there is probaby nothing to worry about.

Secondly the ball jumps off the face. This make chips and short pitches a little difficult to control at first but after some diligent practice on the chippling green I am sure that I will get the hang of them in time.

Third, as the lofts are strong the pitching wedge is 44 degrees which equates to a traditionally lofted 9 iron. This means that you really need 3 wedges in addition to the pitching wedge. I have settled on the 50 Gap wedge, 54 Sand wedge (a forged blade) and a 58 lob wedge (also a forged blade). I will have to lose a club from the top end and have a couple of configurations already mapped out.

In conclusion, as a 50 year old 16 handicapper I feel that these irons were a very good purchase. I am still working at getting my handicap down and am confident that this will happen in time. The confidence that these irons inspire can only be good for your game. Highly recommended

Very good irons, with the stiff steel shafts, they set up well, and look good, distance is about one club longer due to the stronger lofts, pair these with the wilson tw5 wedges and you have a set of irons for many years!!!!!!!!!!!

Model Reviewed: Wilson Ci6 UST Proforce V2 Regular

I owned previously a set of Wilson Di6 with the Graphite Nanotech in Regular. Superb irons, but a 12 hdcp and a moderate-to-high swing speed, this shaft was a bit soft for me, specially oh full shots with the long irons.
Asked the shop pro for same irons in steel shaft but he convinced me in taking the Ci6s with the upgraded Proforce graphite shaft in regular.
He took my old irons and made me a partial refund and a very special price as a regular customer of him.
After a few rounds, I´ve to say they are superb. You can go on fire, work the ball, go sweet... The shaft is very stable, a true pro shaft, don´t doubt to go for them with this.
Form me they are a full club longer than my previous Di6s, but I suspect is because the shaft fits better my swing.
I´m very happy with my Wilsons, and I don´t think other high-priced irons would work better for he mid-handicapper

Over the past two years as my swing speed has diminished and I had to move away from my STIFF shafts, I have played every conceivable set of irons known to man. Adams, Cobra, Hogan, Mizuno, Nike, Taylor Made, Armour, Clevland, Callaway, Ping G2's, etc.
By chance, I read into these new clubs from Wilson... and chuckled to myself. Wilson don't make quality irons, I thought to myself. The last time I played Wilson was my Sam Snead Blue Ridge (I am giving my age away).
Anyway, within the last three months, I have played with no less than 10 different sets of irons. So what the heck. Why not try these. Hey, buy these on Ebay and sell them.. I got the procedure down.

Well I bought them and they arrived. FIRST IMPRESSION... what an eye-pleasing club. Then the real test.. I played them. And WHAT A SET OF IRONS THEY ARE. I don't know where to begin.
First, like I said, these Ci6's look good. Nice top lines.. and the GRAPHITE shafts, really designed well. But the performance was spectacular. At least 1 to 1-1/2 clubs longer... easy to hit.. easy to manuever. And when chipping with the the 7 thru PW.. what a comfortable sight line not looking a big bulky top line but a eye pleasing thinner top line when you are about to chip.
Who would believe it.. but WILSON STAFF has created a definate winner here.

I am an 11 handicap (up from 9 but on my way down again with these clubs)handicap, don't hit the ball far (200-220), swing speed around 82 with driver. Unless you are a scratch to 7 handicap golfer, you owe it to yourself to try these. I am convinced you won't be disappointed. Thank you WILSON for making the game fun again.

Wow!
I've always been partial to Wilson irons....Deep Red II, Di5, Di7, and now Ci6.
I had purchased the new Di7 which Wilson targeted for the high-handicapper like me.
Played 5 round with them. Did not like the Di7 at all. Felt heavy and not a good ball flight although forgiving. Took them back. Traded them in on a set of Ci6's. The Ci6 is just as forgiving, much softer feel and a much higher trajectory. Love the Ci6 even though some say it's for mid-handicappers.
Maybe I'll become a mid-handicapper by playing them more frequently. ;)
Great club!

These are good clubs but I feel they fall short of being great. I have been playing these for a month now and I'm not convinced this will be a long time set. I tested these prior to purchasing and got fit but I find they do not produce the consistent feel my TA7s did.

To be fair they are excellent value, probably the best on the market. The quality of these clubs far exceeds their price tag and they play better than all of the other clubs I tried in this catagory(game improvement/mid-handicap).
They shine in the following areas:pw-6 are lasars and about 5 yards longer than my TA7s, knock-down shots are a cinch with any club in the bag (hit a couple 200 yard rockets with the 3 irons with very little effort)and the ball flight is pretty good through out the set.

The down side,a least for me is because the heads seem light timing my release has become more difficult. I seem to be having a problem feeling the club position on the down swing. I also don't seem to get as much back spin on the short irons as I'm use to. I also found the mid and long irons to be a bit more difficult out of the rough as opposed to my previous set.

I must also agree with another reviewer here as these are not meant for a 20 handicap but for 15 to scratch these are a great club. My suggestion to anyone in the market for these, you must play a round with them. I plan to play them for the remainder of this season and then start my search for that perfect set again.

Picked these up for $275 w/ shipping on Ebay. Amazing deal, as they play like $700+ clubs. Very forgiving on mis-hits, rediculous distance, good workability. These are great clubs for anyone between a 10 and 25 handicap. They look great, too, not too clunky like some of the competitors in the same arena.
I'm a 23, but will definitely be shooting better than bogey golf with these babies next season. You may want to consider a gap wedge, though, if you don't already have one, b/c the PW is 45 deg, and plays a solid 25 yards longer than my old one, which was the standard 48 deg PW. An 11 deg gap between scoring clubs is not cool! Also, if you're prone to pulls, weaken your grip a little, because the offset on these will definitely make a case of pulls worse. This is my issue, though, b/c I used to play adams GT tour irons, which were very difficult to square up at impact. Anyway, if you're looking to improve past bogey golf, JUST BUY THESE CLUBS! They take all the thinking out of ball striking!

Been playing the Wilson Fat Shaft irons for 5 years and really like the customer service so I decided to keep with the company. Settled on the CI6 after trying them out and getting fitted cannot tell you how much happier I am. Distance on pure shots is very similar but on mis-hits they are straighter and farther than what I used to have to suffer thru.

Customer Service

Has been great. Every time I call them i get a response quickly.

Like butta! Feels as good as forged. I tried other cast clubs (ping, callaway, cleveland) and they did not feel as good. Swings itself. Dr. Ken is spot on. I feel this set may last a lifetime as it covers all abilities. Once I improve back to what I was (10) feels like I can work it and feedback on sweetspot hits are instant. Gets more distance than other clubs on mis-hits, also straighter. Wilson is back!

These are the best improved game irons going! Golf Magazine tested these irons and rated them the highest out of all the new 2006 game improvment irons. Over Ping, Taylor Made, & Cleveland. I have played with my set twice and they are long and accurate. Mid-size head with steel stiff is what I am playing. Good out of the rough and great in the fairway! I was very surprised!
