Model Reviewed: Wilson Deep Red Fat Shaft vs Callaway X-14

In my humble opinion, the Wilson Fat Shafts are actually a bit harder to hit than the Callaway x-14s. I really gave the Wilsons a chance, but when it came down to it, the x-14s had a better feel, and it didn't feel like I was straining my wrist muscles on my backswing like it felt with the fat shafts.

I think the x-14s or the Ping I3s are the superior clubs, and play more to your strengths.

Well, finally got a new set of irons after 5 irons with the Mizuno T-zoid True. Everything from 5-PW hits great, but have difficulty hitting the 3 & 4 irons. It must be the lie since I didn't get it custom fitted. The 3 & 4 might have work better if I did. I noticed I hit about 20 extra yards with each iron. It must be the fat shaft that Wilson raved about. Now I have to recalibrate all my distace senses. I managed to sell my 3 & 4 irons. Went with 3 woods, PRGR 200i 3 iron, 5-PW in Deep Red, and 52,56,60 Cleveland Wedges, and of course the Bettinardi putter. If you went with the Deep Red SW, I would recommend a 60 degree wedge to fill in the 40-60yd gap.

I have been playing golf for about 30 years - starting at age 10, and have been using Palmer Peeless Blades for about the last 10-15 years. I had a 2 hour club fitting this morning. I did not have a preference on club brand, but was thinking about: Ping I3, Nike Forged, Talor Made 200 and 300, and 1 or 2 others before the fitting. It came down to the I3+ Oversized and the Deep Red - I chose the Deep Red. These are great clubs - soft, long and straight. Only time will tell - but I like the feel and the size of the sweet spot - yes my Peerless set are historical technology wise. These are the best clubs for the money I have tried over the past 3 months.

I purchased X-14 Proseries, TaylorMade 320, HawkEye, and Wilson Deep Red irons knowing I would sell the sets that did not perform after a year of use. I rotated use every two weeks from Feb. 2002-present. The distance and accuracy I gained with the FatShaft (Deep Red)surpassed anything I saw from the others. The 8 iron in the FatShaft would carry the same distance as the 7 & 6 irons in the Callaways. The TM was close to the distance but getting the same distance required more effort and generally resulted in off center & off target shots. In my opinion, Deep Red, if purchased to your individual lie angle, will give you an almost unfair advantage over your competition.

Model Reviewed: Wilson Deep Red Fat Shaft Irons

I have only been playing for 6 months and bought a cheap set of clubs in case I was to loose interest in the game. Unfortunately I'm now HOOKED. Visited a driving range yesterday where the Pro shop their let me loose with a Deep Red Fat Shaft 7 Iron. Compared to my existing Irons, as a beginner, all I can say is that they made huge difference to me. Longer and straighter shots. I will certainly be looking to buy a set of these (soon I hope). Tried my friends Mizuno MX20's and the Deep Reds felt and performed better for me.

I took the Deep Reds to the range along with the Callaway X-14s. They are both good clubs to improve your game. The Wilsons were a touch more forgiving on mis-hits but when you hit a clean shot the X-14s were a much better club. They both gave very good distance but the X-14s were more consistent. I will now purchase the X-14s, I have been using the TM Supersteels and found them to be harsh and ot as pure feeling as either of the clubs above.

Tried Taylor Made and Titleist before the Wilson Fat Shafts. Fat Shafts felt the best and I hit them straighter. The profile is also a big plus.

I spent a couple of months hitting every club I could get my hands on to see what worked for me. As a lefty, it is often hard to find demo clubs, even manufacturers don't always bring left handed clubs to demo days. It came down to 3 clubs; Ping I-3 OS, Wilson Deep Red, and Cleveland TA-7. Read good reveiws on the TA-7's at this site and they seemed to match the charteristics I was looking for, but I learned there is no replacement for hitting the clubs yourself. I never found a lefty TA-7 at any store or demo days, and so I had to drop them. I hit the Ping's and Wison's about the same, and I could not really justify the extra $150+ for the Ping's. The Wilson Deep Red's have been great. They provide good feedback on bad hits yet really come through on slightly off center hits. I wasn't really looking for more distance, as that was not my problem, but wanted accuracy. With the Deep Red FS, I have really improved my accuracy and picked up 5 yards as well. I would highly recommend these clubs to the 20-25 handicapper who is wanting better accuracy and good distance. A few more rounds with these clubs and I won't be in the 90's!

I took a Titleist 762, Titleist 880, Ping I/3, TM 360, and a Wilson Deep Red 5 iron to the range. I couldn't beleive how much the Deep Red outperformed the other brands. I would hit the ball farther and straighter. The other clubs didn't go far or straight (with the exception of the TM 360, which was almost as good as the Deep Red). The fat shaft made the swing feel really smooth. Would recommend to anyone who wants the ball far and straight.
