Wilson Zip Balls

Wilson Zip Balls

DESCRIPTION

Wilson Staff Zip as in Zero; a zero compression core that is the softest in the game. Zip as in speed; faster off the tee for maximum distance. Zip as in spin; shot-stopping control into and around the green. It's the perfect option for players seeking soft feel, great distance and greenside control.

Wilson Staff Zip Golf Balls feature:

Inside, a zero compression core is so soft that it registers "zero" on golf's Atti compression testing equipment
Behind the patent-pending zero compression core is a high-velocity Neodymium catalyzed polybutadiene
The unique rubber blend in the core uses a minimum of curatives to produce an ultra-soft (very low compression) core with good resilience
Patented HPF mantle layer encases the zero compression core with a speed-generating mantle for distance and higher iron spin rates
Super-soft ionomer cover grabs the club face for higher spin and amazingly soft feel
Unique flat-bottomed, shallow dimples rip through the air to create a more stable, penetrating flight

Before I played the Wilson Zip ball, I had been playing the Wilson Staff TX4 ball. The TX4 is a 4-piece ball that easily compares to the Pro-V1, but for much less $$. I figured I would give the Wilson Staff Zip a try, since these were only $9.99/doz. Not expecting much, I played 2 rounds with them and I am completely satisfied with the Zips! Wow. Unbelievable performance from tee to green, just as long (maybe longer) than the TX4, the Zip spins very well, seems quite durable, and the feel of the ZIP off the clubs & putter is nice.
I usually shoot 81-82 every time I play, but I shot an 80-78 my last 2 rounds. Could it be the new ball? Hard to say. However, for $9.99/doz I am making the switch to the Wilson Staff Zip.

Customer Service

Never had to contact Wilson about anything, but I am going to write an email to them regarding how impressed I am with the ZIP golf ball.

I've been playing this ball all summer and without a doubt this is the best ball that I have ever played with, bar none. The length is prodigious, easily 10 yds. on an iron shot (which caused some initial problems getting yardages dialed in) and even greater with woods. But, the true blessing of this ball is the feel and response around the green. It chips and puts like a dream making distance and directional control a breeze compared to other balls that I have used in the past. This has saved me strokes and I wouldn't have thought that a different ball could make that much difference on a score card. For $16.98/doz., I just can't see playing any other ball regardless of price.

This ball is outstanding. When it is struck purely you don't even feel the ball on your clubface. A lot of people have compared it to the pro v1. I would say that it matches the pro v1 in every category except for around the greens. The pro v1 is slightly, and I do mean only slightly better at spinning on those tricky lobs and pitch shots around the greens. The huge difference however is the price. I bought a dozen for $17.95 compared to $54.95 for the pro v1. If you haven't tried this ball yet, grab a sleeve, you'll be surprised

The Zip is unbelieveable. It's soft feel reminds me of days gone by when all balls were balata. The distance is great. I've used lots of Pro V1s, and I tend to spin them too much, loosing distance on short irons especially. But not with the Zip. It flys wonderfully, and bits and holds as well as any ball I've ever played. At $20 a dozen, I can't imagine playing any other ball.

An awesome ball. It is a very soft ball. It gives you a lot of options and confidence when around the green.

The Zip is long. With all the zero compression and dimple design technology, this ball gets out there.

These are only $20/dozen.

IMHO, based on price, technology, quality and performance. This is pound-for-pound the best ball out there.

I'm not a big review poster, but after playing this ball I had to. After being a long time Pro V1 junkie, I went to Golfballselector.com and one of the balls they selected as my top five was the Wilson Zip. I immediately bought a dozen which saved me 25 dollars and I could not be happier. I even asked a salesman at a local golf store about the Zip before I even played it how good it was. He told me that judging by my size and how he thought I would swing, I should be playing a Pro V1 or Nike Platinum, but he was very wrong. I played my first round and it was under priced for the performance it gave me from tee to green and the feel it had from driver to putter. In all fairness, to me the Pro V1 is a bit more prone to spinning back several feet, but the Zip will come back at times as well. I even threw up a wedge from about 40 yards, it bounced once and stopped. Just to be sure, I played the Pro V1 and the Zip side by side and they are almost identical, for me the Zip may actually be a bit longer, but as far as feel and green side control they are identical. Buy this ball and do not simply pay for a brand name.

I've played the Zip for about 2 months now and am very pleased with the performance of this ball. I had similar results to ont of the previoes reviewers.

I played the Zip alongside the Nike One Platinum and Bridgestone E5. Off the tee the Zip was furthest and most consistent followed by the Nike One ( a close second) and the Bridestone E5 was last by an average of 10 yards over the Nike. The Zip and E5 had higher ballflights but the E5 tended to "die off" more near the apex the balls trajectory.
Iron play put the Nike and Wilson almost dead even with the E5 fairing well. But when progressing to the short irons and wedges the E5 faltered. It seemed difficult to judge how the ball would react with different shots. The Nike and Wilson were very adaptable and although the Nike had more shot shaping capability, the Zip easily held its own.
Around the greens the Nike was king. Pitch/chips were easily controlled with healthy spin and controllable check on the ball. The Zip did well but lacked the spin characteristics of the Nike however, with a little time a player will get used to it. The E5 was last (again) which was disappointing as it's supposed to have a urethane cover (although a 2 piece).
Putting was almost dead even with all three but I prefered the soft feel of the Zip.
The Nike One has a very nice soft but responsive feel. You can easily tell where the ball was hit on the face of the club. Feel off the putter is firm without the harsh feel of 2 piece balls. It excells on approach shots and around the green. Gobs of spin and the ability to "hop and stop" the ball really put the Nike first in this category.
The E5 was a disappointment. I'd almost compare it to the Dunlop Loco or Precept Noodle. Not the ball for me.
The Zip is a fun ball to play. Nice and soft off all clubs without distance loss but gives good feedback and control. It does not have as high a spin rate as tour premium balls but still provides a level of control above other 3 piece mid-grade balls. Although it does not perform as well as the Nike around the green, I found the adjustment period was very short and overall the qualities of it were great.
This would be a great ball for anyone looking for a softer fell ball but still want some performance characteristics. Low handicappers and scratch golfers will probably still prefer the tour caliber balls but I'd definitely recommend anyone to try a sleeve out. Nike Powersoft fans may really like this ball as it is similar but leans towards a higher spin rate off irons.
For the golfers who are in the colder climates - I just played a round in 5C(40F?) weather (yeah, I'm from Canada) and there was no harsh stinging on poor shots. The ball felt just as smooth off the face as if it was 25C(80F?).

The softest ball I've ever hit. Distance not sacrificed at all. Wonderful around the green.

I lined up many brands beside each other and the Zip went just as far (if not further) than the others.

Received the 2 ball sample pack from Wilson. Played my home course in Utah. Weather is hot (94 degrees) and dry. Did my own bake off, since the course was empty. Played Bridgestone E5 (not the new E5+), Precept Laddie Xtreme, Wilson 50-50, Pro v1x-332, and Nike One Platnium.

Distance wise, the Wilson Zip and 50-50 were even (longest), Laddie Xtreme (slightly behind 3-7 yards), Pro V1X-332 (7-12 yards behind), Nike (10-15 yards), and finally coming in last the Bridgestone E5 (15+ yards behind).

Pretty much all these balls have soft feel when you hit it. If I had to rank, Wilson ZIP & Nike One would be the softest, then Pro V1X, E5, and 50-50 would be second, and rounding out the bottom, Laddie Xtreme.

Spin, Nike One had the best spin, follow by ProV1x, ZIP, E5, 50-50,and coming in last Laddie Xtreme.

Conclusion, I really thought that the E5 would perform better, maybe because I have the older generation and not the new E5+. Anyways, the Wilson ZIP performed very well. Driver was long, great ball flight, and very soft feeling. I am very pleased with this ball.
