9 degree loft works very well with Aldila nv75 stiff flex to fit my swing after a nice fitting session. Now I am playing the Titleist Pro v1 ball. My tee shots are 20-30 yards further than my old Cobra SS427. Lower trajectory, less spin, higher ball speed, better control. One of the best values in town.

Model Reviewed: Ping G5 Driver

Tried ten drivers from six manufacturers and ordered a Ping G5. I tried three TaylorMades, two Titleists, a Cobra, a Mizuno, the Cleveland Comp, the Cleveland Hi Bore and the Ping G5. The Ping G5 and the Titleist 905R allowed me to work the ball right and left. However the Ping out drove the Titleist by fifteen yards.

My current driver, a Cleveland Launcher 330 has a ProLaunch Blue Shaft. I can hit a fade but not a draw with it. My current drives average about 235. On the driving range it averages closer to 245, plus five to ten yards of roll. The Ping averaged 270 yards plus ten to fifteen yards of roll, on the range. The Ping averaged fifteen yards more than all but one tested driver.

The Titleist 905T (with a Graphite Design Y-6 shaft) was the only driver that hit the ball equally long, but it was substantially less forgiving. All of the other tested drivers fell fifteen yards shorter except the Cobra, which landed shorter than any other. Although I hit drives routinely in the middle of the tested drivers, I could not find the center of the Cobra. Before ordering the Ping G5, I hit it with face tape, which shows where each ball is struck. All but a few found the large sweet spot.

A unique feature of the Ping G5; drives struck high, middle or low on the sweet spot produce substantially different sounds, which provide excellent feedback for adjusting ones swing. Use face tape as described above to learn what sounds correspond with each area of the face.

You should know; the Ping G5 comes with three shaft options with three flex points, the Aldila with high flex, the Ping will a mid flex and the ProLaunch with a low flex point.

Model Reviewed: PING G5

I basically tried them all, and in the end I would have to say that the PING G5 driver not only performed the best, but looked the best as well. I was fitted for one after a horrible Cobra F/Speed series issue, and purchased one after many demo rounds with 10.5 degrees of loft and the stiff Aldila NV shaft. The driver is a flat-out monster, and gives you the feedback you need to understand what you did wrong on mis-hits, without taking you out of the hole in the process of doing so.

I previously owned a Titleist 983K, with a YS-6 stiff shaft, and I loved the club. (still do) I actually resisted getting a new 460cc driver thinking that I was getting everything out of the club that I could currently, but I was wrong. I won't say that I am getting 20-40 yards more with the PING, but I am probably getting 10 yards more on my best hit balls. The real difference with this club is what I am getting when I do not hit it perfectly, and that to me is the measure of a good club. They all are great on perfectly struck shots, but the rubber meets the road for us hackers when those conditions are not present, and the PING G5 is absolutely the most forgiving driver that I have tried.

Try them all for sure, as no two swings are the same, but don't purchase a new driver without test driving the G5.

Customer Service

Have not yet had to use it, but own PING irons. PING set the standard on customer service, so I do not anticipate any problems.

Model Reviewed: Ping G5 9 degree w/ TPC 100 stiff shaft

I've always been a "Ping guy" for my irons and woods. I sold my most recent Ping driver, the Si3, and decided to save a few bucks and have someone make me a custom driver. I couldn't keep it in the fairway. Went to try other drivers at my local pro shop. I tried Callaway, Taylor Made, and Cleveland. Not impressed. I reverted back to my old mainstay, Ping. Tried the new G5 w/ several shafts. The factory TPC 100 stiff shaft seemed to work best. Nice high, penetrating ball flight. It either stays dead straight or gives me a soft draw. NICE ! Banging it with the most carry I've ever had...about 250 carry and a ton of roll. I will never doubt you again Ping !!!

Customer Service

The best. Top-notch.

Model Reviewed: Ping G5 Titanium 460cc (S-NV65)

This is a review of the stock Ping G5 Titanium 460cc (Aldila S flex NV65). The degree is 10.5 for my driver.

Reccomendation:
Ping got right.
I recommend it highly if I tally all other drivers I've tried and their strengths and weaknesses. You won't go too wrong here.

Loft:
It plays 10 for sure and not 10.5 loft, so the spin is surely much lower as advertised. Do not fear the 10.5 loft with a S-flex higher kick shaft. It works and the 9 may be too low ball flight, excluding bigger hitters than me.

Me:
I'm 275 max with some tail wind and stars aligned. more realistic at 240 - 250 on a very good drive.

Shaft:
The Aldila S flex NV65 is not as stiff as a graffaloy prolite 35 stiff, but who cares. A good shaft for most 95+ MPH swingers. The new 75 V2 UST would match up well, no stock available.

Teeing the ball for this club:
I see no one has commented on how to tee the ball for this driver and I think it most important to comment on this item. I experimented on the range and discovered that the driver hits very straight and moderate trajectory when teed lower than one would expect. Infact, teeing high doesn't work too well with this driver from my results.

Length: decent, though my old TM 320 tour 9 degree regular grafalloy 35 prolite can be a bomber with lower more powerful trajectory. This is easier to hit though and slices far less and still long enough for me.

High slice misses (ugly short floaters to the right or left depending on your hand - I'm a lefty) common to some large 460 drivers. I was very shocked here as I expected the worst adn it doesn't happen. Same for the Cleveland 460Ti thoguh, it hooks to bad. Also, none to mention as compared to the the older ping Tisi 10 and Si380 10. Possibly some hooks and draws for sure. Fades are very light and more so when teed up to high on the face (lose distance while still in play). Seems to want to go long and straight, which is very good.

Competition:
Tried against the new Cleveland 460Ti 9.5. Go with the Ping 10.5 if you have a tendancy to hook. I hooked Cleveland 460Ti into the bush on most shots. Face too closed and possibly loft too low. Ping is about 1 to 1.5 degree closed face on the 10.5. Cleveland is at least 2 degrees closed. Ping can hook too as compared to my totally square TM 320 tour. I can hook the TM too.

Test into the screen at Golftown:
The Ping was long as compared to all other and straight.
good luck - test it first if possible.

Model Reviewed: G5 9*

I've been hitting a 10* G2 with an Aldiva NV 6.5 stiff for 1 year. My average driving distance is 300 yards with little roll. My club head speed is 125-128 mph. I won a G5 in a tournament and got fitted with the same shaft @ 9* loft. The distance was similar but tend to draw the G5 more. The face appears slightly closed. I do get the same trajectory however with the 9* due to weight distrubtion in the head. I am staying with my G2 because of control. The sound and look are very similar. Both are great drivers. For a great bargain go with a G2 but check the club for a dead face as Ping drivers tend to weaken with lots of use.

Model Reviewed: Ping G-5 Driver - 2006 460cc

Great Driver for distance and forgiveness. I shoot in the mid-90's, so I am not a pro. I looked at this clube after reading about it in the May Golf Mag. Club Test 2006. They rated this as the best-buy in drivers. I would have to agree. It was a close race between the G-5 and the 460cc Cleveland Launcher. In the end, the Ping felt more forgiving on miss-hits and lined-up easier at address. It also sounds great when you smack one right down the middle of the fairway. I really like the grip with the built-in finger groove. I immediately took this club out for 3 days in Mesquite, NV. After 5 rounds, I felt like a star. I cranked the ball further than ever before. Even hits off the toe stayed within play a couple hundred yards away. I love this club!!!!

I shoot in the 90's, sometimes break 90 and had a big problem with hitting the ball fat. Problem solved with the Ping G5 irons, i loved them from the 1st ball i hit with them when i got them. I can take out every iron now with confidence that i will hit it well. Now i dont have to rely on my 5 wood or utility club anymore. This is a great great club period.

Model Reviewed: Ping G5 10.5 degree Offset Driver

I would just like to say what a great driver this is, i was using a Benross V8 for 6-8 months with a constant fade, my 3 wood was consistant, but i lost all confidence in my driver and stopped using it all together as it was killing my card. I tested a Taylormade R6 dual and also a Cobra Speedseries offset. The taylormade was the same as my Benross, the Cobra however was very good, but of the 10 or so demo shots with each the Ping was by far the most consistant, as accurate as my 3 wood with great added distance as a bonus. When playing my first round with it, my playing partners could not believe the extra distance and accuracy, and it sounds great too.(it is fitted with a standard ping shaft - Regular) Fantastic Club. Highly recommended. And at £200 a bargain.
