Im 19 and am a strong 8 handicaper! I know everything about drivers because i own everything if i dnt ive tried it properly out as my mate is a pro who i play with alot. The R580XD is a great looking club with a huge head so you will struggle fealing the head at the top of your swing, its like a baloon! It flys way too high when hit so its hard to get roll on soft fairways, i have the 9.5 and even that goes up into the clouds. I have this club in my bag in the summer in calm conditions because this club carries the ball so far and when used on hard fairways you get soooo much roll! This isnt really the sort of club for a low handicapper even tho pros like justin rose used to have it in their bags. VERDICT I'de say its the perfect club for the 13+ handicapper because its forgiving. If your a low handicaper then have a look around for a better shaft.

Model Reviewed: R580XD 10.5 Purple Ice Stiff

I am reviewing Taylor Made R580XD 10.5 Purple Ice Stiff. (High Launch Low spin combo). Just so you know, I am 6'2", and have a drive swing speed of around 105mph. This thing easily carries 260 yds. It really does launch high but does not balloon nor does it die when hitting into wind. The hottest driver I have ever hit. The only driver that i have tried that is better is the R7 and 983K (if I am hitting really well) Distance wise the XD is longer but the R7 and the 983K isn't far behind and has far better workability. THe XD is slightly closed so easy to setup for a draw. I get about 10 yards of roll. It's about 260-280 for me. That's plenty. and It's dead straight or slight draw. For $100 on ebay, easily far superior than the R7 at $499 or the 983k at $399.

Model Reviewed: Taylor Made R580XD

I was a little skeptical about the 440cc head and was looking for something that was around 400cc. I had hit the R7 driver and was very impress but I didn't want to spend the 500 bucks for it. I found the R580XD w/ a stiff Aldila NV shaft for around 125 bucks from 3balls.com. It was such a great deal that I could not pass it up. The shaft alone cost 95 bucks. Anyway, the trajectory is much higher than my previous Taylor Made 300 driver w/ grafalloy pro-lite shaft. But, the ball just lauches off the face w/ some serious speed. It was landing so far I could not see it landing. My eyes are bad. I figure I do get another 10 yards for sure and maybe more. I have to learn how to control the trajectory a bit. It is very well balanced but for me it was a little difficult to work the ball, but that is a good thing. Less snap hooks or big blocks. The NV shaft is incredible. It has a distinct kick to it unlike the smooth swish of the grafalloy shaft. It is the longest driver I have had in my bag.

Having used Taylor Made drivers almost exclusively, I was more than happy with my R580 with 8.5 degrees of loft and an X-stiff Grafalloy Blue shaft. My swingspeed is about 118 mph, but I hit the ball fairly low. All this talk of pros and average golfers going to higher lofts made me curious so I got the R580 XD 9.5 with an Aldila NV 65-X. First day at my home course and the ball flight was high and very strong. Based on the flight, the club is a keeper. When I got to my ball it was about 20-25 yards further than my previous best. The club sits a bit closed (which I prefer) and was incredibly stable. I do miss the sight lines on the R580, but I'll manage. Club goes very straight, but you can work it a bit if necessary. A definite keeper.

I bought this when i got tired of my ball flight when i was hitting the 360XD. it had a regular flex shaft, with 10.5* of loft. my swing was way to fast for that shaft so i purchased the 580XD when the R7 came out. I got mine from 3balls.com for about $150. i love it. i bought the 8.5* head w/ a gd ys-7 stiff shaft. i have gained probably 10 or 20 yards off the tee, and a lot more consistancy. If my swing was perfectly consistant i would look into the R7, but its not, and i dont think it is worth it.

I bought this club back when the R7 came out and made it affordable. Awesome Driver! I'm one of those driver nuts who have had 5 different drivers the last 2 1/2 years. This is by far the best one I've had. I have swung the R7, and the R5 since, and I must say I still prefer the 580XD. I have the Aldila NV shaft and probably added 10 yards consistantly to my drives (previously used Titleist 983E). In the last two months I have had 4 different guys try it out because they were pretty impressed by a guy who is 5'-9", 170 lbs, and hitting it 280 - 300 pretty consistantly. They all bought it and are extremely pleased with this club as well. I still recommend trying as many clubs as you can. Obviously different clubs fit different golfers. I just don't see anyone going wrong with this club, especially as cheap as you can get it now.

I recently purchased a new Taylor Made R580XD on EBAY for $175.00 plus shipping. It is 9.5 degree with the stock MAS 65 regular shaft. The quality on this is excellent. The Taylor Made website listed the swing weight at D2. I checked the swingweight on my Golfworks scale and it was exactly D2. In my experience the swingweight will vary considerably from advertised numbers but Taylor Made knows how to put together a quality product. I wanted to get a driver with a deeper face than my Taylor Made 360XD. The 580XD has a .375 deeper face for more foregiveness on offcenter hits. I am very satisfied with this club.

An awesome club. Much more forgiving than my Cobra 427 and just as long. I think the shaft makes it more forgiving which has a more stable tip. The Cobra was starting to confuse me with the offset face which made it hard to aim. I can fade and draw my shots with the 580XD and the ball goes where I'm aiming. The price has droppped, got mine for $200.00. Can't get a better deal for an awesome club.

Model Reviewed: R580XD 9.5 Custom Shaft

I am following up on a previous review I had submitted on this club. I was having some erratic hits with this club (but still most accurate and forgiving I've hit). I had read up a lot on shafts, especially what is being played on tour (regardless of brand name.) Most tour players are hitting shafts that are 44.5 inches in length for greater control and easier to hit the sweet spot every time. The R580XD comes with a 45.5 inch shaft. I have been fit by a clubmaker with a Harrison Striper J Titanium 80 gram shaft, S300 frequency, 44 inches. It is spine-aligned and so accurate now. I thought I might lose distance due to shorter shaft, but sweet spot contact is so easy now that it negated the shaft being shorter. The large head combined with the shorter custom shaft had been magic. I would recommend most people cutting down the shaft on their drivers at minimum, the R580XD especially since it is .5 to a full inch longer than most clubs.

Customer Service

All my TM drivers have held up well.
