Mizuno MX-23 Irons

Mizuno MX-23 Irons

DESCRIPTION

The MX-23 is the most forgiving iron available. Mizuno engineers produced the MX-23TM to have an even lower, deeper center of gravity and larger sweet area.

I plan on updating this reveiew after some more time on these sticks.

Recently, I had a terrible round going and a friend suggested I finish sharing his bag. I immediately stuck my irons well the remainder of the round (I play Callaway Fusions w/Rifle 5.5 tour flighted). I know the ol' indian vs. arrow addage.... but, these clubs impressed me.

So, I found a brand new set on ebay for 395.00. Got them on Tues. After 2 range sessions, and a round, I am very excited about these irons. I've only been playing 1.5 years but what really stokes me about these irons is the spin they put on the ball. I had 3 shots durning the round that normally would have hit the green and skidded off. These irons put a lot more spin on the ball. Also, the feel is much better than the Fusions, especially on short irons. The Fusions are kind of hot (titanium face) and can be hard to judge distance on say a short knock-down, pitch or chip. I saw an immediate difference with the MX23s.

Distance was about the same with these as with the Fusions. They are both long irons.

Once I have a few more rounds, I'll update this review.

Customer Service

Called before getting the clubs and talked with a person about their graphite shafts and comparision to the MX25s. He was helpful but told me don't lose a club because they are already out of heads in both PW and 7iron.

Just bought these and hit them once on the range and played 2 rounds this past weekend. Hard to describe how please I am, at least initially, with these clubs. They are a little bit bigger than my previous clubs, Hogan Apex Edge Pro, but are more forgiving in my opinion. Very pleased overall as I shot 78, 79, which is about 3-4 strokes better on average than what I usually shoot. These clubs seem to hit about a half club longer but not sure if it's th clubs or renewed confidence. Great set of clubs and would recommend to anyone.

Model Reviewed: Mizuno MX 23 irons Precison Rifle Flighted Shafts

I've owned these clubs for three years and recently upgraded the shafts to the Precision Rifle Flighted Shafts 5.0 flex which is a "weak stiff" or a "strong" regular. What an inprovement over the stock Dynalite shaft. The Rifle Flighted's alow for more fine tuning with regard to the flex of the shaft. I always fell between a regular and stiff and the 5.0 gradation fits me perfect. You can find their recommended swing speed to shaft ratings on their website at www.royalprecion.com...The ball flight in the scoring clubs is lower which complements the MX23's tendency to hit higher than desired for my preference. The longer irons have a higher ball flight which is desirable. I was considering switching clubs, but don't need to now that I really like this setup...

I was fitted for these irons to get newer equipment and I have to say they are awesome. After learning the distances I became pinpoint accurate and was getting a full club length in distance out of them over my older clubs. You cannot go wrong with these irons. THey are very forgiving.

Got my MX-23's in September and can honestly say they've improved my game in a really short time. I only started playing in Feb this year so forgive me I'm no pro yet, but I went from consistant high 90's to consistant low 90's in a couple of weeks and even posted 88 this last weekend. I find that on target hits leave me grinning like an idiot and even miss-hits dont land me in as much trouble as I was before. Only problem now is I think I'm Luke Donald and try for the pin with every shot, amazingly more and more of them are coming off. I have to say I didnt try many other clubs as I'd done my research and was told that pound for pound, these were the best deal on the market.

I've recently had a nightmare with my game, I thought I was going to give up at one point. I had the Ping G5 irons but could not get used to the offset, hit them well but had trouble with direction, went downhill from there... got rid of the Pings for the Srixon i403 - these lasted 2 rounds, then got a set of Ben Hogans BH-5 cheap (£200) these lasted 3 rounds, just could not get on with either of them. I saw the MX25 and tested them at AGD, seemed ok, bought them and took them out
to my Local GC, I honestly shot 4 under my handicap. These irons fill me with confidence, they look good at address and the swing weight seems to be a perfect match for me - they are every bit as good as the Ping G5 but without the offset (maybe the I5 would be a match for the MX25) I'm in a match this weekend which should be a better test for them, if I find that the first round with them was just a one game wonder, i'll let you know. But until then the MX25's are thoroughly recommended

About 2 years ago, I switched from cavity-backed, graphite shafted irons (Callaway X-16s) to steel shafted Mizuno MP-30s. This was a big mistake as it caused my handicap to increase and also lost confidence in my swing. To make things worse, I didn't give up on the irons and tried very hard to adopt a swing that would work. This was due to the addictive feel of these irons when struck purely -- but those were few and far between. This year, I switched back to Callaways (X-18s) and regained my confidence, but I surely miss the sweet buttery feel of forged irons.

About 3 weeks ago, I demoed a set of the older MX-23 irons and liked them a lot. I knew the MX-25s were very similar with some added technological features. I bought a set at full retail ($750 for steel shaft).

The shafts (new Dynalite Gold SL - regular) are a tad fatter than the original Dynalite Gold so the grip feels more like a mid-size fit but it's not a big deal. They're also about 15 or so grams lighter than the original Dynalite Gold.

I've used the clubs for 2 rounds and here are my observations so far:

1. Most of my mis-hits still managed to go straight with reasonable distance. I mis-hit a 9-iron on an approach shot and still managed to get about 120 yards (my normal 9-iron distance is 135 yards).

2. Though not quite as sweet as the MP-30s, these clubs definitely have the feel of a bona-fide forged club -- crisp in every way -- but only on purely hit shots. Mis-hits will give you a significantly different feel.

3. I originally expected to lose some distance with these clubs as their lofts are higher than the Callaways by approximately 1 degree and also due to the fact that I'm switching from regular graphite to regular steel. I'm pleasantly surprised that I haven't lost any distance with these clubs based on the 2 rounds played.

3. I was never a good long iron player. In fact, the 3-iron of my Callaways are brand new and the 4-iron is slightly used. I can hit the 4-iron fairly easily on this MX-25...talk about a confidence builder.

4. Aesthetics -- these are certainly 'looker' clubs. They look very elegant in the bag -- the heads almost look like jewelry.

I'm really quite impressed with these clubs -- they're a good compromise between forged muscle-backed and cast cavity-backed clubs in terms of feel. I highly recommend that these clubs be considered when in the market for a new set of irons. They'll likely make it to your short list, and probably end up in your bag. I can wait to get out again this weekend for round #3.

Cheers!

Model Reviewed: Mizuno MX-25 (theses are replacing the MX-23)

I've been in the market searching for new clubs like the rest of us, which would help take my golf game to the next level. I've always been a Callaway guy playing with Big Bertha's. I don't want to take anything away from the bertha's as they do the job they were designed to do (which is to the get the ball in the air and that's all). I was looking for irons with a good reputation and that will help my golf game as I move along. I tried the MX-23 which were a great club But the MX-25 which are replacing the mx-23 are BETTER. There basically the MX-23 but with more bells and whistles (more forgiving). I could not believe that I could move the ball around as much as I wanted. For the first time I could draw, fade when I wanted to, and I hit more straight shots with these clubs then any other club out there, and believe me I’ve hit about everything out there. I never thought I would leave Callaway, but I've seen the light with the Mizuno MX-25 and I will never play golf in the dark again. So if you are looking for to improve your game and take it to the next level, give the new MX-25 a go.

P.S. I know these clubs are forged, but don't let that discourage you. I've always played with Cast Cavity since I started, and was a little scared when the golf guy at Golf Town told me they were forged. I didn’t matter as I hit so many good shots before I knew they were forged. So do yourself a favor, go out and try these, you'll be glad you did. I know I am.

Also please get fitted for clubs at your nearest golf dealer. This will help you 100%.

THey added 1/2 inch to my club length. put on mid size grip, and changed the lie angle of the clubs for free.

I've played with everything out there, but used Callaway Big Bertha 04 for a long time.

If your not sure on the MX-25 try out the cleveland CG4.(nice club) but I know the MX 25 will be your choice. Plus they really look nice in your bag, and not everyone has these, since most people play the hottest irons out there even if there not meant for them.

The best iron i have played, got them for $350 in the wrong shaft but you cant go wrong for that amount. Long irons were extremely easy to hit, very forgiving and extremely long. Went from hitting a 6 iron 175 to 185 yrds. But my shots ballooned with the dynalite regular flex shafts (my swing speed is 110mph with a driver) so make sure you have the right shaft for you. Primarily straight ball flight but could work if i needed to. Only trouble i had with them was hitting out of longer rough. Not outdated whatsoever even though they're almost 3 years old.

I have never written a review on the internet about anything. I bought the Mizuno MX-23 this spring after hitting all of the other major brands, I was biased going into this to Callaway or Hogan, not sure why. But, I kept coming back to the Mx-23s. I bought these in the spring and have been using them all summer. I am very, very pleased with these clubs. I hit them farther and they have a great feel. If I have a problem with them I tend to draw or hook them, which is huge change, for the better, from my previous fade and slice. I have much more confidence in these clubs which has helped my swing. I know now if its a bad shot it's me not the clubs - I hate not having an excuse anymore.
