Titleist DCI 990 Irons

Titleist DCI 990 Irons

DESCRIPTION

From Titleist: The 990 Iron features a "variable muscle back cavity with progressively biased weight throughout the set. Long irons are weighted to promote playability and higher ball flight. Short irons are weighted to produce lower, more controllable ball flight. Traditional V-grooves for consistent trajectory and spin performance."

After playing Wilson Staff blades for about 15 years, I decided it was time for a change. I used to play about 5-6 times a week, so hitting forged blades wasn't a problem. But due to a reduction in playing, as well as a swing change to relieve stress from my lower back, I decided to shop for new irons. I was looking for a club that was more forgiving, but didn't compromise the feel/look/performance I was accustomed to. After trying several clubs, including Titleist 981 and 962b, as well as Mizuno Pro and Pro II, it was clear that the DCI 990's were perfect for me. While they are not as soft feeling as forged, they are still very soft. Compared to some of the gaudy "tennis racket" clubs on the market they are not forgiving, but compared to my forged Wilsons they are more forgiving. If/when you decide to purchase these or any other set, be sure to go through a custom fitting. I was very surprised to learn that the standard lie angle was quite a bit too flat for my swing. With some reservation I ordered my set 4 degrees upright, but after hitting several bags of balls it is clear it was the right fit. I now hit the ball much more crisply with my irons than I have for about 2 years. I ordered mine with Rifle 6.0 shafts. The trajectory is perfect; starts low and rises beautifully. I also ordered Winn grips. The 990 is a very solid, stable club throughout the swing. It provides very good feedback at contact. They also have excellent feel, although perhaps a 1/2 step below forged. If you are looking for a bit more forgiveness with minimal sacrifice in feel and asthetics the 990 is for you. I would not recommend these to high handicap player. You do need a good, solid swing to get good results.

My clubs arrived exactly 9 days from the day I was fitted. They even sent 1/2 dozen balls based on my fitting. They didn't send cheap ones either, they sent Tour Prestige! Cool!

I recently purchased a set of custom fitted 990s with tour flighted rifle shafts. Maybe it's the shafts but I disagree with much of the commentary about these clubs being harsh on mis-hits. They are very solid and almost soft feeling on flush hits, and yes if you hit it a little thin you will know it. These irons are not overly forgiving but certainly not punishing either. They are deadly accurate and with the rifle shafts send the ball on a beautiful trajectory - starts out low and just keeps climbing. People seriously stop to watch at the driving range. If you're thinking of a new set of irons, you have to try them out to appreciate the solid feel and ball flight. One other comment of note - these are lofted a couple of degrees up from many other clubs so they play about half a club shorter than what you may be used to. But who needs to hit a 140 yard PW anyway?

After my first round with these, I knew I didnt need to look any further. Excellent distance and ball control with outstanding feel off the club face with all clubs on fairway shots. Off-center shots are somewhat unforgiving, so dont hit off center shots! Balls in rough seem to come out better because of the heavier club face.Dont give up on these clubs if you have a hard time hitting them, they are designed for the better golfers and they will almost force you to step up your game to the next level.

i am a division 1 college golfer. if you are an accomplished player, these are the sticks to hit. you can play any kind of shot, while the accuracy is outstanding. maybe harder for higher handicappers to hit, but they shouldn't be playing them anyway. if you're a good player who can't seem to get over the hump, this is your answer.

These are excellent clubs. A well-struck ball feels so sweet. They feel MUCH better than the 962's. Easy to work with ball without losing control. Thinned shots are felt but end up nearly as good as well-struck shots. I use Rifle TF shafts which are a good match. Recommend them to anyone who is looking for the feel of blades with some added forgiveness.

The DCI 990 is clearly an excellent iron for advance player. I wouldn't recommend the DCI 990 to the beginning and intermediate players. The DCI 990 has a small sweet spot and less forgiving. You can try them out, but I wouldn't recommend it to players that have higher handicap. But again, golf is mostly between the ears.

Traded my Ping ISI's for these. Not as forgiving as the Ping's, however when your game is on these are long & accurate. I believe over time these will force me to become a better player.

I LOVE THESE CLUBS! After trying several different irons over the past few months the clear choice was the 990’s. I like the 990’ because they allow me to easily shape my shots (I play a high fade) and they are surprisingly forgiving. With a normal swing the ball flight is exactly as advertised. The long irons get up in the air with ease and the short irons play lower for better control. And these clubs feel real solid on contact! The club head is a little heavier than most but I like that because it’s great when you’re in the rough or when chipping around the green.

I played forged blades for many years because they delivered the feel and feedback that makes hitting a golf ball so much fun. I then went to perimeter weighted irons with an offset but they just don’t give the better player the control needed to shape shots. If you want to become better at shot making, stay away from game improvement clubs. I’m back to a player’s club and couldn’t be happier. I’m a 7 handicap.

Very good clubs, they do what I ask them to do. If you want a fade you get a fade. Its that simple. If you have a good swing they are great. Don't touch them if you cannot hit the center consistantly. They are worth the cost because these clubs are not ones that I will be likely to replace anytime soon.
